Powell making subs too late or not?

edited February 2013 in General Charlton
Second week in a row now. I think it's a very divisive topic on here so I'd like to hear some good arguments from both sides.

Results don't lie though and I'm hoping the six dropped points are a harsh lesson. Big difference between the Championship and League One.

Go ahead, discuss.

  • Should have been 3-0 up at half time

    Yep. Pretty much this.
  • Yes, if you look at most other championship managers- subs are made as early as the 55th min- It is rare to see Charlton out of subs before our opposition is.
  • Always works for me on football manager!

Yeah, and 5-3 down full time.
  • Look at chances missed, not just the is new fashion of blaming the sub making.
  • He made subs this week I don't understand what you are all going on about. Unless he is supposed to predict when Holloway was going to make one and get in there first?
  • We're a mid table side at best, we're going to be inconsistent.

Need to take more of our chances. Powell's made plenty of good substitutions and tactical decisions in the past. Of course he's still learning as a manager, but we also don't have the quality and budget that some other clubs have at this level.

What, have you read the question?

  • Ridiculous !!
This is football , you love it and hate it !
This happens in football , by making a sub in the 55-60 min isn't going to gurantee a team 3 points

  • Not at game but Froggatt on BBC London said he reacted too slowly to Palace changing formation, and subs should have been made sooner
  • Powell made a sub a few minutes after Palace made their subs... they then scored a few minutes later. I don't understand how people can be saying it's too late by then? Should he be making a certain amount of subs at a certain time of the game or what?
  • The Charlton team gets points and results on energy. It needs freshening up after 70 mins. Players like Fuller, have not played regularly, are they going to last the full 90 ?

Palace made good quality substitutions, and changed things tactically. Charlton didn't until it was too late again.

I love Chris Powell, but this subs thing, he really has to sort out.

It is also clear that this team is paying for a lack of strengthening, imagine Wordsworth, Ritchie or Judge to freshen up the midfield, or a quick striker.

Its a bit disappointing as with, x3 quality additions, to the left midfield, striker and midfield, this team would not be far off the championship top 6 but without that we are looking over our shoulders against the relegation battle still.

I will be happy for Charlton to reach 54 points ASAP, but with Charlton they are sure to make us sweat and suffer.

Ok then my short answer is not.
  • same old charlton we never took are chances when we had them.powell tried to do the best he could he did not want to lose this game anymore than us.i no its great to beat are rivals.but let him learn from his mistakes this season.hopefully we will kick on next season and lads lets not argue amongst ourseleves we are better than that
  • The last two losses have been down to our missed chances to polish off th games. But I do think Powell's a little reactive rather than proactive with his subs which is fine if you're a few goals ahead or a much superior team
  • It does appear that Scp is often out-thought from the opposition bench Don't mind him learning but he but he does have to raise his game a little and stop making the same tactical errors. His subs never seem to have a positive impact on the momentum of the game.

He makes Parky look a tactical genius!!!
  • Holloway made Powell look very poor today.

It's easier to change a team when you are losing.
  • Damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. Can't understand why we time waste with over 30 mins. left to play. Hate the way we try to defend a 1 goal advantage.

  • Holloways subs won them the game! Simple as that! Powell needs to be more attacking with subs at 60-70 mins instead of holding out til 80+ hoping to see a game out! It's not just been the last 2 games neither! He is learning and I hope he changes his ways sooner rather than later!
  • I love how now Holloway, just like Dave Jones, are tactical gods for playing the "throw on an extra striker when losing 1-0" card. What is the correct response to that if you're already playing a 451?
  • Six points dropped in two games through Powells negativeness. Tries to protect a lead by being too negative and then next thing you are chasing the game. How about scoring again and putting the game to bed and picking up three points? Nah, why do that, much too sensible.

Needs to learn and fast as at the moment he is trying his best to lose his job in my opinion. Won't take much for TJ et al to pull the trigger.

4-5-1 makes the lone striker tire quicker SCP should change that sooner.....

He brought a left back on for a left winger - so we had 2 LBs on the pitch - not very attacking. Once we had some threat up front we at least mostly kept it out of our half.

Why can we not see out a lead at the minute - 0 points in 2 games from a position of being 6 points up.

But of course Powell's shit don't stink.
  • Bet Powell congratulates players when they come in at HT instead of shouting at them for the misses. This approach softens the lads and as a result they're not as well prepared as they could have for the 2nd half... All speculation yes but...?
  • To be fair, Holloway is a very experienced manager ( 16 years v 2 ), whilst the finance from Zaha's sale enabled him to bring in Phillips and Dobbie in the Window. In saying that, we had a very strong bench ourselves and I'd be interested in the views of those there as to whether bringing on Stephens would have helped us retain possession in the second half and stem the tide ( all easier with hindsight, of course, but the commentary suggested that we were very much under the cosh ).
  • We weren't negative today. We lost because of a slip and not taking chances.

Nothing is Powell's fault and nothing from the bench would've changed the result in my opinion

  • WSS. This mantra isn't working, I'm afraid...
