The big screen and Adverts

Is is just me or has the amount of time we have adverts on the big screen increased a lot this season?

I don't mind the club looking to make money out of it but if I look at the screen half a dozen times in a game (either to loot at the names of the opposition players or the clock) I reckon that five times out of six I turn 'round and there is an advert on the screen.

As I say I'm all for making the screen pay for itself but it's a little bit of a waste of time if it's never going to show anything other than adverts. Does this bother anyone else or am I just being really fussy?

  • There definitely seems to be an increase on previous years. Doesn't bother me too much though, sometimes slightly irritating I suppose
  • Would be handy if the adverts were shown in widescreen format, allowing for a space at the bottom for the current score and time to be displayed at all times.
  • Thought exactly the same KHA , hopefully the club is getting well rewarded for it , because it is very annoying , maybe we should be handed 3D glasses as we come in , so they could make it a bit more lively? :-0

  • I've noticed this but generally thought that the adverts tend to start at a break in play, be it a sub or player down injured, they don't bother me as they only last about 30 seconds, it could be worse, the screen could actually show the game as some grounds do.

    Are you sure that you are not looking at the screen for the ads? Surely the distraction of a change in picture on the screen is why your eye's are drawn to it which is why you feel that 5 in 6 times you look at the screen there is an ad?

    Concur - the scoreboard isn't very bright (black background), the ads are bright and flashy.

    There's a greater variety of ads too (which means more or better sponsors, which is good), and they are more distracting, but I think total ad time is about the same.

    Correct, the adverts are played during a break in play to not distract from what is happening on the field.

  • The ads appear at every break in play at some clubs. Colchester was a nightmare - the ball goes out for a corner and the advert states "Corners are sponsored by xxx" and this is the key time you want to check the clock and see how long is left (they aren't silly these advertisers!!)

    There are loads more this season but, as said previously, if it helps to pay for it then it's all worthwhile
  • Some of the people placing the adverts on the screen need to have a think about what they're putting up - half the time you can't read it because the writing is too small. Still if they're going to keep putting money into the club I'm happy. Just ignore them.

    Aren't most of them for Bream Team, though, which I suspect means that as they do the software etc, that they are taking free advertising instead of a fee?

    Not too keen on the bit where the Charlton badge goes up in flames, either

    but this, for me, is the problem

    the main time I want to check the screen is when the opposition are making a sub to see who's going on and off (seeing as the NU speakers are so terrible you can't hear the announcements) but you have to wait 30 seconds each time for the advert to play by which time the lineups have been changed so you can't check who went off
  • I think they should introduce two balls on the field of play for certain periods: call it "multiball-time sponsored by..."

    Think of the revenue.

  • I find the advert with the goldfish a little annoying when everyone shouts "fish". When it goes and the club badge comes up. I shout "sword". Its a habit I am finding hard to break. I hope no-one around me notices.

    Nothing stopping them from keeping the cloak going though. Doesn't have to be a countdown or anything, just show how long the match has been going for. They do it on the telly and I'm fairly sure I've seen it at other grounds.

  • I think the club should be doing all it can to attract advertising and the screen is a great way to do that. We know for a few season's ago how expensive it is to run so this helps it to not be a drain on club finances.
    After all ads only last around 30 seconds and we used to have nothing at all so I think we could all put up with it

    I can't see that this is any less effective than shirt sponsorship and is likely to be more effective than stationary boards around the pitch.

    I don't think a clock past 90 minutes is allowed by the FL, as that is the duration of the match. Easy enough problem to solve, as most mobile phones have a stopwatch app - just set it when the stoppage board is shown. I do find the changing images on the screen a distraction, as I sit in the Lower West and the screen is always in line of vision, albeit peripheral when the ball is at the 'Covered End'!

  • Don't mind As long as breamteam change the fish adverts. When it comes up now it just sounds like a few hundred people are deflating. Such a depressing noise.
  • Find them all annoying to be honest. The ones I notice most I suspect are not paid advertising as they are with companies the club already has relationships with, so I presume its an offset for other payments.
