Every player has his price but Stephen's departure would leave a very big creative gap in our team ( as to which, see the performances at Forest and Burnley, where we were outplayed in middle ). If Frimpong, who is only here short term, goes back to Arsenal in the New Year, we're going to be essentially left with Jacko and Bradley Pritchard for the central midfield slots. Of course, we'd get a replacement in, but it would look and feel like a backward step.
There will be enough speculation about the likes of Chris Solly in the window without effectively inviting it. I doubt, in any event, that Villa will be back in for Dale as ( a ) they got Westwood from Crewe and ( b ) they are showing signs of getting their act together. Best to concentrate on the five important league games between now and New Years Day
It does sound like Powell is desperate for Villa to come in with a massive bid for Stephens! I wouldn't be bothered if he left IF we got enough for him...
Doesn't sound to me like he is inviting any offers at all. He's just being up front and honest about the situation - pay what he's worth or don't waste our time. I wish more managers would come out and be as honest.
Least it shows we've got a little bit of money and not desperate to sell players, some Championship teams will be forced to sell players at low prices.
I'd rather keep him as midfield is our weak point IMHO, we need strengthening in midfield with Jacko getting on a bit too
Sounds like a massive "He's available at the right price
this - otherwise why comment at all ? CP actually admits that Villa then found a replacement, so why bring it up ? I realise that a journo may have asked a question about it, but CP could have just said that he wasn't for sale.
I despair about the quality of our midfield in the New Year if we lose both Stephens and Pingpong. They are several classes above anything else we have. Stephens may well have his price, but it is a significant one and CP needs to have a replacement lined up. Not convinced Villa will be back. They signed their plan B when the Stephens deal fell apart.

But that'd make him look like a liar if they offered us stupid money in January, and the board took it.

He didn't say that he WAS for sale either did he? He just stated a fact about Dale and the rest of our players for that matter that clubs need to take Charlton seriously if they're going to take an interest in our players.
Think some are reading too much into his comments. The Stephens/Villa saga is well publicized, everyone connected with the clubs knew it was ongoing back in August - why hide behind "no comments".
Jesus, couldn't you get any more adverts on your site?
If I click on the link, it virtually freezes my laptop.
So I'll avoid News Hopper links from now on.
I never click on their links, just as I never click on links to any site that I know has adverts that have sound. I know they need to generate advertising revenue to survive, but I don't wan't their noise imposed on me.

I think he's a good player and looks better when he's got someone like Frimpong sitting behind him, but with the right money Powell could maybe get in cover at left back, left wing and midfield.

That's what the AdBlocker extension for Google Chrome is for
@NLA, I know his father-in-law... He wont, his wife isnt happy up North. They want to come back to London; the reason the Ipswich move didnt go through was because his wife decided that was too far, so Leeds might be a push!
Glad Powell and the board are taking this stance. It's better than having another Parker situation where our players leave for a lot less than we value them. Maybe if we had said all along you can have Parker for say 15m rather than saying he is not for sale at all it would have been a much happier ending than the way it turned out.

"Player X is as good as Stevens and available for a fraction of what we get for Stevens, leaving extra funds to strenghen elsewhere".
Only one of many possible scenarios................

IMO Frimpong alongside him has allowed Stephens to play some of his best football this season.

Side bet of a pint or two in an establishment around the valley
I would love him to come here i think he is a great player
But this guy is normally bang on with leeds signings
I win if he goes leeds you win if he dont
No one wins if he stays at posh
