  • Neithe rof my kids are interested in Football, the final straw was when I took them to the Valley and we had the full hospitality works and the food was rubbish any chance I had then was lost.

Coming from an asian family my parents had no footballing allegiance, I think my dad used to say Palace to wind me up, once i started following Charlton
  • My dad wasn't interested in football but my uncle took me to see Halifax Town on a regular basis - the first time I saw Charlton play was at the Shay when they lost 2-1 Keith Peacock scored. My son's first kit was a Halifax Town strip - perhaps the only one seen on the Charlton kid's football courses - but the 400mile round trips to the Shay would probably have counted as child abuse so it had to be his local team (and the only one actually doing something locally!) when it came to watching a team. His sisters all support Charlton and the youngest comes with us to all the games.

I know it makes me a plastic supporter (only had a season ticket for 9 years) but at least the kids know their place.
  • PS I know all the words to the Red Robin - and sing them as well, much to the kid's embarassment.
  • I was the first in my family to support Charlton, and I still have no idea why. Grew up in Catford in the 80's and everyone supported Liverpool or Man U at school. Got Sid and his flag into Charlton, and now my 3 year old son loves Charlton.... he thinks Millwall, Palace, Arsenal and Chelsea are disgusting, and should be pushed in the mud! Good lad.
  • I'm third generation Charlton.
My Grandfather (he attended games until he was 94) and My Dad both went every home and the majority of away games as well.
My eldest (Greenie Junior), you may have noticed is Charlton mad, my middle lad, briefly flirted with supporting Liverpool even though he had a Charlton ST, but is now 100% Charlton, and is pissed off that I wont let him go Millwall away.
My youngest, again has a ST but does not go too often at the moment.
My brother Tony, is Charlton. My other brother, can't remember his name, is West Ham.
The first team I 'supported' was Arsenal, Charlie George scored in the FA Cup final to beat Liverpool 2-1, I saw it on TV and thought he was great, next season, 1972, I was taken to see Arsenal play for my birthday, it was Ok, no more. So that was my first game.
I went with my dad to Charlton the week after, for some reason, it 'felt right', dunno why it just did. I'm still here 40 years later.
My only regret is that we were due to visit the Valley when Greenie Junior was a toddler, that would have meant 4 generations at the same game, I remember the club were going to do a bit of publicity, unfortunately my Grandfather died shortly before we were due to go.
If Charlton were to disappear off the face of the earth, I could not envisage supporting another club.
  • 1986...9 years old

The old man tells me it is about time I got into football...and buys me a mexico '86 sticker album

I start collecting...and sticking....and reading about all the teams the players play for....
I think I asked him who I should support.... and he told me Charlton because we had just been promoted and although he was by no means an active supporter he always looked out for their results.....

plus my significantly older half-brother (awight, Rob!) supported them (and now his eldest is semi-regular at the valley)

and the old man did actually used to go to the Valley from time to time back in the day

oldest half sister married a Scottish Palace supporter (wtf!)

another half sister married a solid Charlton man.... them and their 4 kids have all had season tickets at the valley for a number of years now

I can't imagine having a child who didn't support CAFC

it's bad enough having relationships with Chinese girls who jump on man utd, chelsea, man city bandwagons....
  • Yes and no.
Parents and grand parents had a wierd affection for Millwall despite that my dad used take me to Charlton.
My son has all the important life decisions made by me.
All part of being a good parent.
  • Dads family all charlton, started me in the seventies and now I take my son,we go to about ten games I season(not proper I know), next season is going to-be my first ever season ticket as I'm a man of leasure these days.
  • My Dad is a huge Charlton fan and I have been going with him home and away for the past twenty years and still do. A lot of our strong relationship is built on going to Charlton together.

Most of the extended family have at least taken an interest in Charlton since the 80s, as Mark Hulyer is my second cousin. Some Millwall fans in there though.

The 1st and only Charlton supporter in my family. I've already told the other half that our future children can watch Liverpool on tv with him, and wear their shirts, but they are getting ST's from the age of 5 wether they like it or not.

  • Some great stories here, especially the dad who drove past Selhurst, that's not proper football!

My dad and Grandad support Charlton. Neither were very keen and my dad gave up in the premiership years because it got boring!
  • Old man comes from oop norf met me mum in south London had me and I only had one option in terms of which team to support from these parts, really.
  • My dad used to take us to The Valley when it was derelict in the late 80's even before he took us to our first game at Selhurst. It was all part of his big plan!!!!
  • I support Charlton because my dad did. My younger brother supports Charlton because I do. (Other brother knows absolutely nothing about football and 'supports' Chelsea.) My daughters support Charlton, despite living their whole lives in Barnet. The wife is an ex-season ticket holder and is generally sympathetic, but couldn't name a single current player.
  • I'm Charlton through my grandad who moved up from Hastings area to Plumstead before the war and started following us.

Dad, brother, uncles, cousins and everyone else are all Hammers though. Grandad used to take me to matches as my old man was managing semi-pro when I was a kid so always had a match himself. Sure he would have wanted me to be a Hammer too but he missed that boat when I got my first ST for my 6th or 7th birthday and I was hooked on the Addicks.

Quite like being the odd one out in the family really, showing a bit of individuality and all that, but sadly, not having kids myself, I'll be the last in the line despite my best efforts with my nephews when my bro's not about.

One half of my family are Charlton (Dads side). Didn't have any contact with them growing up (including my Dad) until my Dad passed away, since then I've become a ST holder and go with my family. Feels right, and it's great to visit my Dad at the East stand memorial patch on a regular basis. It's mental how quickly you can love a club!

A sad but uplifting story at the same time, nice one Antse7en.

  • My parents came down from Aberdeen in the 80's. My old man went to most other London clubs to try and find a team to replace Aberdeen, Charlton felt right for him. Did some stewarding at Selhurst and has had the same seat in the East stand since our return to the Valley.

    He's smart my old man.
  • Grandad used to take my mum to the Valley, just filtered down. We're all Charlton apart from one sibling who chose Gillingham for some unknown reason.
  • Have two daughters. Both support Charlton. My youngest daughters middle name is Valley. Mum supports Charlton through me really same as dad god rest his soul. My uncle Fred got me involved. Best gift I could ever have been given.
  • Became a Charlton fan because they were the team on the back of the local paper, went to my first game in '76 with my brother and a neighbour, I was 9. Dad wasn't a football fan and wasn't around so no guidance there.
Have been a season ticket holder since we have been back at the Valley, took my daughter to her first game when she was 4, not counting Welling pre-season when I was 8 months pregnant. My husband doesn't like football so no other luckily no other influence on her. She has come with me on and off over the years but I didn't want to push it and put her off, she got her first season ticket this year and I was made up on Tuesday when she posted on Facebook about the game (I think she may have caught the bug).
Having taken a number of nephews over the years, most if not all converted to fans, I now take my brothers eldest son every home game so having started the family support I am doing my utmost to keep it going.

Cheers fella. A large number of Lifers knew him from what I understand, Pete Loveridge, I only know a couple of you in person myself. And yes my kids will most definitely be Charltonised!
  • My Dad and his Family are all Millwall. My Mums family are all Charlton. I was and will always remain mummys little soldier.

As for my sons well, 2 out of three ain't bad. 13 yo and 7 yo are both Charlton but my contrary glory hunting middle son, aged 11, is Chelsea. My 16yo daughter hates all things football with a passion.

We live near Exeter and the 7yo was born down here, but none of them support them in spite of all training regularly in their community program. In fact the chelsea fan is in for a two week taster with their academy starting next week!
  • Hopefully getting my son 4 and daughter 3 into charlton both know the badge and both have last seasons shirt! But not gonna take either of them yet but my sons says to me when im putting on my training top to go to a match "can i come to football daddy?" Bless him :) . My dad is from Downham but while he started footy life surporting arsenal he then got his first job as a milk round boy and milkmen was cafc fan so dad went along with him and the rest is history!. My uncle is a fans also and couz plus my late nans dad was a fan too and i think thats as far back as it goes!.

Yeah... my dad did that too. Sat in north stand and watched people dog walking

Then we went to club shop at selhurst to buy a shirt

I think we waited for valley return before our first game together
  • My father was a Charlton supporter from the 1930s and first took me when I was 8 when they played Portsmouth in the old first division. I have been a supporter for 61 years and travel from Clacton-on-Sea, to all home games and a few away,
  • My great-grandad took my dad, so I'll take that as three and a half generations.
  • My Dad started coming up from mid-Kent to The Valley in the 30s glory days. I was 7 for my first match on 30 Apr 55 - a 4-0 hiding from PNE.

My elder son started at 6 (vs Hull in '82) - he still goes to The Valley from time to time but become largely disillusioned with the professional game a few years ago and now mainly follows a local team. My younger son started at 7 (vs Man U in '86) and still follows CAFC but now lives in Oz.
  • My Grandad (on my mum's side) was a big Charlton fan and used to go a lot. My dad is also a Charlton fan but I've just realised that I don't know if that came from him going with my grandad after he'd met my mum or if he was an Addick before then. I'll be asking him during Sunday lunch for sure.

After a brief dalliance with Liverpool when I didn't know any better as a nipper, I've been an Addick since about ten years old. Dad never forced me to go and during the Selhurst & Upton Park years I pretty much went on my own to every game as dad wasn't up for it. In the last five or six years it's been good to see my old man get back down to The Valley a bit more regularly.
