  • Was brought up listening to a lot of EJ. He was one of my mum’s faves.

My parents were in the British foreign office in 1982 out in China when Watford went on a bizarre post season tour to play the Chinese national team. As this was just after Deng Xiapoing had opened up China to capitalist reform, post Mao’s death, it was the first time a large British delegation had visited the country. So, some of the great and good followed the tour including Martin Amis and Stanley Rous.

On the team’s final night in Shanghai, they had a huge party for the team, which the delegates and foreign office staff attended. Large but still intimate event and Elton decided to do an impromptu 90 minute gig up on the stage. Pretty unforgettable stuff as my Mum recalls but she took a while to track down my father before finding him chewing off Graham Taylor’s ear about football instead of listening to the performance. By all accounts both Elton and Graham Taylor were absolute gents and lovely people.

Up there with the best ever Glastonbury performances. Only slight downside were the guests who added nothing (and in a couple of cases to me actually detracted a little). Not sure how many careers like this we will have to celebrate in the future.

I'm probably the only one here watching but this QOTSA set has been brilliant. One of the best live bands in the world.

He put absolutely everything he had into that. Literally gave it his all.

  • If that does turn out to be his last ever UK gig, you can't say he didn't finish on a high.

    Awesome stuff.

That was just outstanding! The best I've ever seen at Glasto......50 yrs of music, which I've grown up with, and he played so many hits and great tracks. I'm so pleased to have witnessed it.
    Thank you Elton!

To be honest leaving it at that amazing finale of Rocket Man is the right move. Talk about going out on a high.

    Tiny Dancer get in!!
I never really knew this song until recently. It was played at Charlton Dan’s funeral a few months ago and since then I now find it really strikes me when I hear it. Beautiful song.

Bit niche but did anyone see featured this afternoon a South African harmony quartet called The Joy. Was excellent but can’t find it online

Amazing performance, not a super fan by any means but that was 2hrs of classics by an iconic legend.
