It just reinforces my opinion that most people in the world either follow what that are told is good music or are totally tone deaf. And just because Macca was in the biggest group of all time, one of the best selling solo artists, extremely talented songwriter, fine musician, great performer and been around for more years than most, doesn't make his opinion trump mine.

I've had the usual father/son arguments with both of mine.
Over a decade ago my eldest tried to tell me that Pete Doherty and the Libertines were going to end up bigger influencers than Paul McCartney and the Beatles. The irony that they both performed this year at Glasto but he will never win that argument and is starting to accept that now.
The youngest used to try and trash my liking of rock but recently I have caught him trying to play many such solos on his guitar. The other day it was Free Bird. I wished him good luck with that but it is gratifying that he's come round at last!
I played drums, as a teenager, in rock, progressive rock and punk bands, I enjoy soul music and reggae but my taste just doesn't extend to rap or hip hop. But I wouldn't knock either of my sons for enjoying any music. It really is what floats your boat as long as they don't tell me that their music is so much better than mine!
When it comes to live performances we are entering a zone. I think rap is any spoken vocalisation along with some kind of backing sound. I don’t think rap is singing as such. I don’t think rap is spoken word because of the accompaniment of sounds, but I see plain unaccompanied spoken word as poetry.
Now if you take a section like
The man don’t care I said the man don’t care I don’t get satisfaction reaction because The man don’t care.
Yes it is social, political and personal expression and commentary, but to be singing it needs more in it, like a tune. I would be surprised if there was genuine rap harmony (see Everly Brothers) but unsurprised if there was rap in unison. I don’t mind if it has a message or is political, music has ever been thus and artists have the right to express themselves. That doesn’t necessarily make it valid. Smack my bitch up is expression, but unless I miss the obvious irony I find that kind of sentiment distasteful, but then again I find the questionable edge of nonce lyric ‘Well she was just seventeen’ questionable too.
I still stand by my opinion that hip hop/rap-doesn’t work live. It’s my opinion and I’ve give it a go I assure you.
