Can I moan about the Dart charge here? I haven't crossed it in years. Went through four times in three days, the third time was after 10pm. I thought I had a week to pay it. 48 hours after the last time I went through, I went online to pay. It wouldn't let me because I was too late - I had until the end of the following day each time. I had to pay £105 in fines. That's fucking ludicrous. No reminder, no warning. I don't know what the signage is like telling you you have until the end of the following day, I assume there must be some but I didn't notice it which implies it's not good enough. Fucking 105 quid. Madness.
You must share the same glasses as your namesake @jimmymelrose as he had the same problem last year.  Said he didnt see any information about how or where to pay despite there being signs both before & after the bridge for a good 3 miles.

Yeah, sorry. There is plenty of prominent signage about paying the charge by midnight the next day. I'd probably keep quiet about missing all those signs in case they decide to refer you to the police for driving without due care and attention!
  • Heard back from Thomas Turrell who is my London Assembly representative.

He said he has asked TFL for local residents (Bexley & Bromley) to be exempt like Dartford & Thurrock residents are for the Bridge.

I said I wont hold my breath & that I still think this is discrimination due to the peak charge being one way only.

Should have built a crossing further down to spread out the load, Dagenham to Crossness/Thamesmead would have made more sense IMO, and there's lots of distribution centres on both sides of the river there so they could have made them commercial-centric
That sort of clear thinking objectivity will always get you sacked out as an undesirable lunatic from any local or central government body

An East Thames river crossing has been discussed, designed and theorized over for generations
There's even undeveloped lands over which the road links to e.g. A2 could be installed

Major contribution to the imposition of Silvertown Tunnel has been RBG (who never looked after the Greenwich or Woolwich foot tunnels properly) the most useful idiot any property developer ever met.  With proven history for making up environmental and pollution bullshit as they go along RBG decided that more vehicular traffic capacity across the Thames arriving in its borough wouldn't have any issues for A102/A2 congestion or for air quality.  Just the same as they decided no mains power installation would be needed for any cruise ship terminal on the Greenwich shore, cos the ships running their generators 24/7 when tied up wouldn't make any environmental impact!
Khan gets all the flack, largely directed from the heinous gutter press and gravy train supping crooks in the former tory government, but RBG play along cheerfully as their own atmosphere becomes more toxic by the day.

Or the exact location of bus stops in relation to the Valley.
If you haven't already done it download the TfL Go app.

When you're next at The Valley open the app and select Buses near you

It will show you all the local bus stops and the times of the next buses on each route. (Only problem is when the 380 and 486 are diverted after matches.)

BTW it does the same for anywhere else in London.

What is this witchcraft you speak of ?

Next you will be telling me to get a smart meter for my fuel!

Technology is surely always bad and a capitalist scam 😆😉

But seriously the app is actually quite useful.
  • The fare consultation is the usual TfL PR exercise, as the reality is that tolls have to come in, to pay for the Silvertown tunnel. You can't unbuild it, and remove the cost

The REAL debate was before TfL committed to the Silvertown tunnel, as the choice was clear at the time, no new tunnel and no new toll, or new tunnel and new toll.

The Silvertown Tunnel will open in April, with free bus fares for the first year. The tolls for Sivertown and Blackwell tunnels will be applied.

Like the Dartford Tunnel you have to have an account
  • I have a rather dormant Dartford Tunnel account with credit in it. Is it the same thing, and my credit can be used if I drive through either the Blackwall or Silvertown tunnel?

No you need to open a new account if you want to use Auto Pay, it is unclear to me if you can pay on a one off basis either by phone or online I assume that is what is ment by 'Other Channels'. But you have to pay the peak rate at all times.

I believe that the blackwall and silvertown tunnels will use the same system as ULEZ and congestion charging which is separate from the dartford tunnel system.

so no, i don't expect you will be able to use dartford credits

    .
  • I'm still trying to get my head round this.

Are "peak times" just 6-10am northbound & 4-7pm southbound ?  And "off peak" is all other times. Thus, if you travel southbound between 6 & 10 am you are only charged "off peak" rates.

If so that is discrimateray and needs to be challenged in the Courts
Come on Golfie, it doesn’t take much to work out that the peak period is people traveling into London in the morning midweek and people traveling out of London in the afternoon midweek.

if the toll costs are £1.50 at all other times (and free 10pm - 6am), then it’s a little friendlier than I was fearing

  • So now my wife has the option of paying £45 a day to get to work on the fast train plus £13.50 a day parking at Ebbsfleet plus £4 or £5 a day in fuel
    Or
Drive to Canary Wharf £15-20 a day, parking at Canary Wharf at £18.50 a day and then £8 a day to use the tunnel.

Thankfully only 3 days a week in the office so £46.50 a day x3 = £140 a week, or £560 a month to go to work.

That’s almost another mortgage.  Just to go to work. I dread to think how people who both commute to London 5 days a week can afford it!

Is it any wonder we have so many people living on benefits in this country!

Drive to Woolwich, park at Calderwood Street, get the Elizabeth line from there
  • The Woolwich Ferry is still free :), or use the Dartford crossing and the A13 to Canary Wharf.

But a "peak period" is a peak period. Like on the trains - you pay more during certain hours and it's not any cheaper coming out of London than going in.

Only applying the additional charge in one direction is effectively a tax on those coming from south-east London, which stinks.

    Exactly.

And who says anyone is "going into London" by using the BT ?  Its a means of getting from A to B. I mostly use the Tunnel to see clients in East & North London.

Anybody ever seen that video of an ‘authoritative’ American woman explaining how to make tea by putting a tea bag in cold water and microwaving it?
I see that as a kind of equivalent of the tech wonks who design systems and impose stuff on the rest of us.
It might work for them, but does it work for, like, proper people?
To be fair Americans have never been able to make a decent cup of tea.  Probably something to do with dumping all the decent stuff over board, rather than tech.

There's always the Woolwich Ferry - if it's running!
  • Would a horse and cart be allowed to use the tunnels or is that specifically excluded?
Maybe a fancy funeral would travel through.

Not allowed since the year we won the FA Cup, apparently.
  • What about charging for the new quick tunnel, but free for those who want to queue old style ?

TFL are taking Rotherhithe Tunnel out of the game soon, with some “essential repair work”, and I’m guessing the only free car ferry in the UK won’t stay that way for long either.
