The thing is I often end up with a soar throat after a match day and yet often I come on here and see people saying atmosphere was poor, I know thy the covered end is relied upon to start songs off and we do most the time but a lot of the time others don't join in so it can't be just down to us
Well I heard very little from the Covered End choir on Saturday. No VFR until the second half for example.
We do occasionally have a good atmosphere, Huddersfield last season for example, where the whole crowd was signing, Sheff Utd was good too.
Singing has to start with 11 players showing us how much they want it. If they had sung on Saturday it would probably be in appreciation of the smallest man on the field.
Still waiting Or maybee somone else can explain as i seem to be missing the point?
I think the point is that the North Upper is full of pikeys. And it smells bad up there. The day they start washing and contibuting more to the club by buying a seat in the Upper West will be the day the Upper West takes on their role of singing the incest song at every team that comes down to the Valley.
Like Dave55 and several others on here, I was part of the Covered End through the 70s and early 80s. You stood there because that was where the singing and atmosphere was created - everyone joined in.
We didn't stand in silence, we didn't wait until the team scored - we sang throughout the match because that was what the Covered End did.
And when we did score, the dancing and singing "Knees up, Muvver Brown" was something else!
I suppose today, with everyone sitting down, it makes people less animated.
But the enigma seems to be that it's our same quiet North Upper fans when travelling away, who often make such a brilliant atmosphere.
It wasn't the most successful period in Charlton's history - but we didn't wait for the team to score before we started singing. If we had, we would have waited all bloody afternoon!
We were in the Covered End to have a good time. And if the match was rubbish we still had a singsong and a laugh.
You didn't get the singing on the East Terrace or the old Grandstand. It was the Covered End that did that.

It's chicken and egg. It needs something on the pitch to ignite the crowd.
That didn't happen on Saturday.

Christ knows what they think of me. You're still a baby at 46!
Is that any clearer now?

Unfortunately I think your mind migh be playing tricks on you in your old age if you think it was some sort of cauldron of noise every home game!
