  • The only player anywhere close to his level of thinking was Paul Walsh
  • Dont be silly - Paul Walsh never played for Charlton. Am sure he would mention it if he did.....
  • Thanks Charlton Live Team. I am normally at the ground about 10am,ish.I also would like my Valiant 500 book signed.
  • Did he realise there would be such a massive gulf in class between him and his team mates before he signed? Not disrespecting those players- but it was like getting Messi (albeit an older version) at the time!

Will he be available before the game to sign autographs?,ie from car park to entrance.

Hi Derek, I am not sure what time he arrives, I just know what time he is coming into the studio, and I know he will come down from upstairs, if you get there early enough I am sure he will enter via reception, I just don't know what time.
Just look for his big white egg in the car park
  • nanoo nanoo!
  • It must be a nice feeling for him seeing how the club has progressed since the days of playing in the second tier in a half-empty ground......
  • I got him to sign the front page of the programme for the game after his debut (against Rotherham I think) which had a great picture of him on it. Will try and dig it out and post on here, must get around to framing it at somepoint.
  • was at the reserve game where he came on as sub i think it was Swansea and we won 4 v 1 about 2,500 turned up which was huge considering we was only geting about 7,000 for a hoe league game
  • Does ha have any news on Nigel Reo-Coker.

Seriously I was lucky enough to see him play for us in most of his games. A pass ahead of the rest of the team.

Also Killer tells a great story of when the played away and were in the hotel.

So the young pups can get an idea of how excited we all were, it was a bit like us signing Lionel Messi or Christiano Ronaldo now!

Blimey thought we might have got a few more for that
  • Sadly too young to have ever seen him play. Love hearing other peoples stories though. There was a program on ESPN classic the other week about the top 20 most shocking transfers in world football and I'm sure Simonsen to Charlton was in the top 3!!!

Still don't really understand how this transfer ever came about. As someone else has said, the equivalent to us signing Messi today!!! It just doesn't seem possible!!! Amazing!!

Barcelona had just signed some bloke named Diego Maradonna. Simonson had become surplus to requirements at Barca under the number of foreign players rule. Mark Hulyer, having just taken over Charlton, heard about this and decided to make an audacious attempt to lure Simmo to Charlton. Negotiations dragged on for months, with numerous trips back and forth to Spain by Hulyer and other Charlton officials. It was a seemingly never ending on, off, will he wont he saga that dominated the back pages of the papers at the time. Most (including many Charlton fans) believed it was just a publicity stunt by Hulyer and couldn't quite believe it when Simmo finally made his debut in a Charlton shirt.

I remember the Newcastle home game so clearly. He made a series of passes into space for team mates to run onto & of course none of them were ever expecting it. It was a little bit embarrassing actually to see how differently he read the game compared to the rest of our team. And I never once saw him express the sheer frustration he must have felt.

So, a bit like the NRC story of its day ;-)
  • Paul Walsh was a much more talented player than his career shows. Probably another one who left us a bit too early.

  • Is it true you consider Les Berry to be the best centre half you ever played with?

lol ... describes it perfectly ... he was so far ahead of the rest of the team that eventually he had to 'slow-down' to their reading of the game ... and he was still great
  • Wow, great response, a lot of these questions will get answered during the course of the interview, we will ask as many as we have time to, thanks all
  • I only saw him in one game at Hillsborough. We lost byt he was so much better than anyone else on the pitch, even the wednesday fans clapped him. A question for Alan. Does he keep in touch with any of the squad from his days at charlton. Also which was his most memorable match for us and why?

Possibly a rather obvious question, but valid nontheless: given the benefit of hindsight would he repeat the exercise? (I think I can guess the answer but you never know)

I remember seeing Allan on the touchline in Parken in Copenhagen as manager of the Faroe Islands (or was it Iceland?). Perhaps his stint at CAFC prepared him in some small way for the real world.
  • Will this be put on CAFC Player Peter? If so please could you notify when and label it so that we know the programme contains the interview with Simmo, thanks.

Can somebody put up our team for that Newcastle game? It would be interesting to remind myself who the other 10 players were that day, who struggled to get to grips with what Simmo was trying to do.

The interview will go out om Sunday evenings show, I will see if we can get the Club to put it up as a stand alone interview on Player as well, will talk to them tomorrow.

  • Thanks March51. Yes, it was Martin Robinson who I remember having the biggest problems anticipating what Simmo was going to do next. Ha ha, that must have been the highlight of Les Berry's career too!
