  • And you're still a mug

  • Wilson will always be a 'scapegoat' because he will always come under criticism because he is crap!

Time to start calling out Jacko then, because he really does seem out of his depth. Funny how people willing to give him games to settle in the new standard and not the guy who has been at the club less that 1 month

  • I'm not going to stand in the stands shouting abuse at him and will cheer him on but there's nothing wrong with people expressing there opinion on him.

Thought he was pretty pony last night. Put in some crosses but that's not exactly hard. Thought his positioning was shyte. At 1 point a long ball got put through and he wasnt even goal side of his man. Simple stuff like that has me worried for the next few games
  • Personally i thought Wilson was decent enough last night given he was thrown into the match unexpectedly, he made no serious errors and i think he can still develop. However when he lashed over right at the end i did stand up and shout something very angry and violent because i wanted to! I sit in the Upper West and sometimes it seems like i'm the only one actually cheering the team on anyway so i think i have earned that right!
The bottom line is your positive support should always outweigh negative comments but i won't clap or cheer mindlessly. If you clapped last night can you explain to me why?
  • I dislike moany fans too. But for me there is two types of moaning.

Type 1) A player attempts a killer through ball but overshoots it and the player can't reach it when he would have been in a goalscoring position.
Type 2) A player greedily takes a shot when there are several players in a more positive position

Type 2 for me is perfectly warranted, as a player which clearly makes the wrong decision when he is already seeing the next day headlines is an attitude that shouldn't be promoted. Type 1 infuriates me, the player knows that he has mishit it but the idea was there. If they got these things right every time, they wouldn't be at Charlton.

For me people need to realise that our players can't be "complete" players and be in the Champ.
Stephens for example, he can play killer through balls and open up defences with those passes but he seems like a million things are going through his head at once and gets caught in posession or simply passes the ball to the other team.

Premiership quality elements with league 1 quality elements.
  • last night people were moaning at every single thing that went wrong, its awful for players confidence and for fans that are meant to be helping the team by supporting them all they are doing is getting on their back whats the point
  • But it's the same anytime anybody on here expresses criticism towards one of our own we are immediately making them out as scapegoats. Wilson wasn't the Only one that had a stinker last night but for me right back is probably the easiest to play in terms of possession. Everytime the ball went near him he panicked. All bar a couple of clipped crosses (which I'd expect you or me to be able to do) he was woeful. Defensively he got tore a new one. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt in that he was up against a good player...but I really honestly don't see him improving to league one level right back let alone champ. Everytime he's appeared he's looked lost.

And the shot at the end. Wow.

Wilson will always be a 'scapegoat' because he will always come under criticism because he is crap!

Jeez! You've decided this after how much game time?
  • Fans pay good money so are entitled to have an opinion and if you're passionate about the club then it's hard not to express it. That said a lot of people moan for the sake of moaning. Last night though it was so frustrating as we had no wide man and were on the back foot for a majority of the match.
  • If some people put as much effort in getting behind the team, as they do at moaning, we'd all be better for it.

It was our own fault, we bigged up this game and from the start we looked poor. And IMHO even the Covered end never really got going. A bad night all round.

  • In truth, I thought our support last night was bloody awful. I don't buy this idea of "the team need to give us something to sing about". Bollocks. Palace fans were up for it, and that rubbed off on their side from the first minute. We let our team down last night.

ValleyGary, I'm surprised you think so little of Wilson and have already written him off, despite the fact that he hasn't made one full league appearance.

I think on this occasion, you're being rather unreasonable & we need to give him at least 10 full games.

I seem to remember Wiggins didn't start too brightly last season ?
  • Calling people Mugs, does not help when it comes to your assessment of Wilson. In fact, it's childish.
  • edited September 2012
Give Wilson a break, he was not that bad, Wiggins looked very shakey in his first half a dozen games now he is offered god like status
  • I'll stop moaning when we sign EMILE HESKEY
  • Watching the highlights on FLS, Wilson made 2 good crosses, and 1 cut back for Fuller. They didnt show the last minute shot !
Personally didnt think he had a bad 2nd half.
  • Wilson was different class to JJ and Pritchard. Could proably add Kermongant to that.
  • Love this thread! It seems like a couple of posters are the answer to our width problems-crossing is a piece of piss and any of us could do it! I know this board is about opinions but statements like that are ridiculous. As is writing players off as 'not up to it' after less than one full game. How many players have taken a while to find their feet at a new club? It's not so long ago the likes of Wiggins and Solly were being dismissed (probably by the same impatient fans) after a couple of appearances and they didn't turn out too bad did they?
  • Wilson was terrible, it's not scape goating it's stating a fact, although the majority of players were awful that night. Not sure how everyone can say wiggins was terrible as he played all of 20 minutes? But the shot from Wilson topped off his performance for me.. Shocking
  • Glad I'm not the only one.

How is saying I could clip two crosses into the box laughable? Go to any game on a sat afternoon and any right back with a bit of time can do it. The difference between levels is not clipping 30 yard balls, it's strength/pace/brain/ball control.

You seem to think that I'm gonna go to games and boo the man! If he's in a charlton shirt then I'll accept it for the next 90 mins but I'm telling you now he is not a full back and shouldnt be near the first team as a full back!!

If he turns out half as good as either wiggins or solly then I'll be the first to admit I was wrong.

  • Some of you haven't got a clue. Wilson was excellent in the circumstances last night. So he played one ball too far ahead and lost possession and he wasted a shooting opportunity at the end? In between he did very well against concerted Palace pressure and he put in a number of good balls. He was also outstanding against us last season for Stevenage. I remember the same tosh about Chris Solly when he started. Give Wilson a chance, he's prepared to play second-fiddle and needs support when he gets on and not to be scape-goated for every touch he gets wrong.

Very good post. I agree (although that final shot was f***ing stupid!).
  • Here's my thoughts; a lot of fans expected him to be a bit sh*t after the performance against Leyton Orient pre-season in the Cup. He was essentially playing in a reserve side that day, and a side that wasn't exactly good. However he looked shocking in that match.

I know I let that cloud my expectations to be quite honest, as did some of the fans around me in the North Upper. However, when he came on I was prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt; but very quickly I was changing my mind. Being in the H Block I was looking directly over his position at RB and he didn't seem confident with the ball, his first touch (and subsequent ones!) left a lot to be desired, he seemed to lose possession quite easily and he often seemed to get caught out. I also don't get the guys who claim he was a good tackler - I remember him making a right balls up of a few tackles.

Now his confidence isn't going to be great in his first -proper- performance in a new team, especially with the fans on his back - and lets not get started on the first touch of some 'Charlton Legends' like Euell. But it's natural for the fans to get on his back if he isn't up to scratch - hopefully he can get past that as there's not a thing anyone can do to stop the fans getting wound up; I know I certainly was.

I would say I'd like to see him play RM before I make my mind up - but at the end of the day, I'd prefer Waggy or Green in that spot. As RB I don't think I'd be too confident with him should Solly get injured, at RM I do think he could do a job - but he doesn't offer any more than we had before.

I will say he put in a good shift; a real trier, and I don't actually care about that final shot. In the whole of his game I think the last thing he should be concerned about was that shot. Hopefully he gets his confidence up and we'll see a new player emerge; but I wont be holding my breathe.

That said, Good luck Lawrie - Here's hoping Round 2 at The Valley makes us appreciate you a bit more! (He's gonna need it with the Charlton Fans) ;)
  • Regardless of how people think Wilson played against Palace, there are members of this board writing him off as 'Blue Square standard' based on one substitute appearance. That is idiotic. Nothing else, plain idiotic. If you think you can get the measure of a footballer off one sub appearance then you are wrong.
  • he did play 120 mins of the game against Orient in the league cup and missed a penalty and gave one away
  • How on earth anyone can state after two games that he is crap is laughable.

That shot at the end was stupid - by the way, Fuller did exactly the same thing a few minutes earlier, but few people have mentioned that - and no-one knows it more than Wilson.

Um, how about Leon Clarke? I posted on here after his unbelievably bad 20 minute cameo substitute appearance against Brentford that surely he wasn't as bad as he looked, was he? Sadly, he was.

Yes but we didn't know that then. It COULD have been he just wasn't playing his best. Turns out Clarke really was that crap but Wilson might not be.
  • agree it's hard after two games to judge but people can have an opinion
and so far he has been pony which clearly doesn't mean he can't turn it around and be a decent player
  • I thought someone would mention Leon Clarke in this, and I have thought about it. The fact is, I can speculate that any individual player coming in to Charlton is shit. In fact let's say I claim every player we sign from now on is terrible. I'll either be right or wrong, regardless of what I've seen. Sure, there may be some like Rommedahl or Leaburn who divide opinion but for the most part ultimately they have a good or bad time at the club. Clarke looked rubbish when he started, and in his, what, 5(?) further appearances for us he didn't look good. Started well for Scunny though. Wiggins and Hamer didn't look great when they started, but now they are central to our plans. The fact is if you make a judgment on a player with hardly any evidence in front of you you'll either be right or wrong in the long run, but you cannot know. Sitting there saying X is crap or Y is a genius is pure guesswork. My dad likes to sit there before penalties are taken and say either 'scores' or 'missed' just as it's struck. Pisses me right off. And he sits there with a smug look on his face and a 'told you' when he's right but regardless of the outcome he knows nothing about what's coming

I agree, give the man a chance!! He wasn't our worst player by a long shot. As for the shot at the end...the shocking free kick by Yann and also the shot by Stephens (when he should have played in Wright-Phillips) were far worse.
