Attracting More Asian/Coloured Fans

The late Conrad Hunte, a black distinguished former West Indian test cricketer, uses the word "coloured" throughout his autobiography "Playing To Win."

In my experience it is the white illiberal liberals who stir it up by criticising people for using non PC terminology or coming up with nonsense like calling Christmas Winterval so as not to offend Muslims. I work and have worked with Muslims over a quarter of a century and have never heard one object to Christmas. In fact within Islam Jesus Christ is a respected prophet contrary to what many with their own agendas would have us believe.
  • If I was black I would much rather be referred to as coloured than ethnic, it always reminds me of ethnic cleansing

  • We already have a higher number than most comparable small clubs and things have noticeably changed over the years. This will continue naturally and nothing specific has to be done to target individual groups. As said they don't generally have the historical ties that local white fans have and choose to support the big teams.

Mind you, getting rid of the separate turnstiles and washrooms and not making them sit at the back of the Valley express coach might help :-)

I can see this thread being nipped in the bud before too long, unfortunately.
However... this projected encouragement reminds me very much of when the patronising, liberal, meliorists suggested that more should be done to encourage the Working-Classes to attend the theatre and opera as though they were incapable of deciding to do so for themselves, seemingly oblivious to the fact that perhaps they didn't attend because they simply didn't want to whatever the reason.
All are welcome, we know that...

    Coloured is a no-no.

  • Agree with most of the above, but once they do come the way they are treated is important, i.e. that they don't have a negative experience due to their race/religion.
  • I think the club should have a conserted recruitment drive for one-legged, black lesbians. There are not enough of them in the north upper. Especially in J-block. (Sorry I meant Gay-Block)!
  • I hate being referred to as white.

The original hillsborough report has been described as a white wash.
If you have money in your bank account, you are desribed as being in the black.
When I go to a casino I bet bet on red or black (or the green zero) but not white.

    I'm over it now! ;O)

  • I'm British-Chinese. I find the word coloured a faintly weird and colonial. Not the most offensive term these days but we live in such a PC world it's difficult to not offend somebody at some point. I'm not offended btw. Have heard and been called a lot worse but thankfully not for a number of years. I guess most people are independently minded and will choose what sport and what team they want to support regardless of any recruitment drive. But the best recruiter is success and continued success for the club. You'll have people from every walk of life suddenly nailing their Addicks colours to the mast. Until then I think the club is doing admirably in the community schemes and I'm sure that does it fair share of recruiting of everybody in the local areas.

We all have coloured skin, so why would we want to attract more "coloured" fans? Think we have about 20 odd thousand that are gonna turn up at the valley tonight supporting us.

few of my mates describe people of west indian stock as having a touch of colour
  • I'm British-Chinese. I find the word coloured a faintly weird and colonial.

But you claim to be green though?

  • Coloured? Need to be more specific. This is not the 1970's with us watching Mind your language, Rising Damp and Love Thy Neighbour.

  • A shame someone who wants to start a sensible discussion sees it degenerate into pc discussion. It's fact that the number of non-white people at the valley is much lower than the local population. Would we like to increase to the same? For most of us yes. So there is a valid question as to how we can attract more.It may not be possible in the short term but this is still a group with signifiacant potential so we should keep trying.
  • would rather any money spent on upbeats

there is nothing stopping ethnic minorities coming to charlton. its in the local papers and theres a 27,000 seater stadium on your doorstep. im sure they are fully aware we exist.

perhaps we should encourage more eskimos or Navajo Indians as they seem to be under represented?

Eskimos! Eskimos! Get with the times DA9 - all the Inuit fans up in the Arctic Circle reading this forum will certainly not be encouraged to come down to The Valley if they are referred to using such an outdated Imperialistic name :)

On reflection though you may have a very good point as the word Eskimo means "eater of raw meat" - so maybe they will be attracted by the catering at The Valley!!

Funny you say "for most of us yes" when all the responses on this thread so for say just leave it as is to grow organicly....
  • Why

Football is common knowledge not as if ethnics dont know about football
    We dont say whites only
We have a ticket office anyone can walk up to and buy tickets, strangley they are no different to white people

So if anyone wants to come they can, why should we do anything different.

Minorities not attending has little to do with them physically being unable to. The same as minorities at the top of business has very little to do with them being intellectually unable to do the jobs. Discrimination and the impact it has on people is far more subtle than that.
  • i dont think we have enough ginger fans!!

I'm pretty sure our ticket office doesn't discriminate on the basis of race.

Personally, I don't give a toss whether the people sitting in the valley are white, black, brown, green, blue, or pink. As long as they're supporting the team, that's all that matters. Living in Gravesend, we have a reasonably large Indian community (sikh seeming to be the biggest faith), and from my experience, most have always supported followed Man Utd or Liverpool. I think that a major reason for this maybe down to when large numbers migrated to these shores in the 70's & 80's, Football terraces had a very bad image of being full of right-wing fascist thugs, and deemed not safe for asian/black supporters. So, if it's not safe to go and watch a team, it doesn't matter what part of the country that team plays in if you're only watching them on the TV.
    Slowly things are changing..........
  • Its allright we've got the legend that is Norm:

Sorry, Len, but it is utter nonsense to say Winterval was created as a term for Christmas that did not offend Muslims.

Even the despicable dregs at the Daily MFail were forced to apologise for pedaling this untruth for a decade or so

    8 November 2011
Winterval was the collective name for a season of public events, both religious and secular, which took place in Birmingham in 1997 and 1998. We are happy to make clear that Winterval did not rename or replace Christmas.
