OK I know he's getting on, still impressed though

  • This is the guy who activated his get out clause when we were relegated from the premiership despite being one of the reasons we were relegated in the first place so he could keep earning the big money. He can afford to be charitable for a few weeks!
  • does he still have that record of being relegated for every club he has played for?
  • I always liked the Hermannator.

Think so, both of his clubs last season got relegated.

Not sure that Brentford went down when he played for them ,but he was relegated from the Prem five times with Palace ,Wimbledon ,Ipswich ,Charlton and Pompey .

  • Poor Hreidarsson, the hand of doom. Proper Jonah!
  • Great player for us, had a lot of time for him.
  • credit where credits due ...never let anyone down playing in charlton shirt

I actually asked Richard Murray about this at a supporters meeting soon after it happened and Mr Murray said HH had done us a favour because the club couldn't afford to pay him. He went on to say that it was a shame some of the other players didn't have the same clause. The club made a huge mistake at the time in that there was no provision for relegation in most of our players contracts.

So if we had a clause saying upon relegation your wages would go down 30 percent we would not have activated it ?

Yes, the alternative is players like Marcus Bent that we had to send out on loan as we couldn't afford his wages.

Didn't we get Matt Holland cheaply, as Ipswich needed him off their payroll after their relegation
  • Always liked Hermann. One of the better players in our relegation team............................
  • i'm trying to remember a televised game where he scored a cracking header - Birmingham or Blackburn away i think...
  • Blackburn away.

Will never forget his forward flip celebration in our 2-0 win over Everton either.
  • Proper football bloke. Well done HH.
  • Always liked Hermann.

Remember when he scored at home against Chelsea on Boxing Day 2003. Pregnant daughter had stated when the corner was taken " I'll call the baby Hermann if he scores from this" and Bob's your uncle !!!

Billy is now 8 yrs old.....
  • The Herminator always gave 100% in a Charlton shirt. For that i will always look fondly on his time with us.
  • A diet of Puffins must keep you young.
  • Top player. Always preferred him at left back as I used to love him maruading down the wing sending opposition players flying like skittles. Started to look a bit suspect for us when he moved to centre half but always gave everything for the team. Terrifying but brilliant

Interesting Murray said that. It's a shame we must have believed the hype about us being PL mainstays. We came down in such a mess due to over-paying players. Presumably this must be why Pardew was allowed to spend ridiculous fees on players who probably wanted less money than players of that fee would normally command. I can't imagine McLeod, Gray, Varney and the likes were on the same money as most £1.5-2.5M players.
  • Loved Herm, proper, full-blooded, no-nonsense defender.

Remember him being immense away at Birmingham despite being nearly knocked unconscious in the first half and playing most of the match with a heavily bandaged gash on his head. Think Curbs said he and all the medical staff wanted to sub him off but Herm refused and played on.

Him getting polaxed by a massive Duncan Ferguson elbow right in front of the dug-outs about 10 seconds after Ferguson had come on is another favourite memory.
  • Always liked Herman, thought he was proper Charlton.

  • Saw him leaving sparrows lane today in his land rover.

obviously not at Blackburn the day we got relegated then. A disgrace. Lost all respect then when he activated contract clause and slunk off.

I guess you must have missed all this then?

  • Really don't see how activating a clause was "doing us a favour". If you imagine a world in which he didn't have that clause we could have transferred him without a fee if his salary was too much, or we could have got a fee, if someone was willing to pay. I can't say what would have happened, but at the time Pompey were distributing money with gay abandon.
  • Well he went on to play in the Premier League for three more seasons and win the FA Cup so I think he made the right move.
  • Pardew should've sold him in the January for 2.5m to West Ham.

Just shows that you shoudn't take what you read in the papers at face value, always two sides to any story. Thanks for putting me right i'll forgive him now!
Always liked him as a player altough thought his last season was a bit iffy
