  • Is there a minimum appearance restriction?

If not Tom Hovi ,Tahar El Kahlej (?spelling), Tony Hazell and Maurice Setters come to mind quite qickly!
  • Traore played in the PL. No way he was worse than the Doc or his ilk.
  • Cranie. Martin bloody Cranie

Tony Hazel was miles better than Alan Dugdale who he replaced.
How about blond fullbacks Jeff Scott and Lyndsay Smith.

    He was.
  • Souleymane Diawara
  • Souleymane Diawara
A centre-back who wouldn't head the ball. Wigan away the year we went down just typified what a crock of shit he was for us.
  • Konchesky. Good midfielder but shit defender.
  • Alan Dugdale
  • Plenty of choice here. For variety I'm going with Carl Tiler. Ok not the worst but destined to make a mistake in nearly every game he played.

Simon Francis has to be up there. Still Traore for me though.
  • The Doc and Traore for me

Honourable mentions to El Kalej, Butterfield and Llera.
  • Souleymane Diawara
The guy who has been playing Champions League football since he left us? A few dodgy moments adapting to English game but would be in top 5 CBs for me.
  • Some people need a bit of perspective - Konchesky? Even people like Diawara and Traore might not have been the best for us but it was in the Prem, they'd be a lot better in League One.

Whereas people like Francis weren't or wouldn't be.

    Delusional
  • Johnny OOOSTERGAARRD , and Peter Shaw..?
  • Peter Shaw
  • Bobby Goldthorpe must be in there, although still a favourite of mine. Consistently tried to dribble ball out of defence despite obviously lacking the talent to do so, but often succeeded with lucky bounces, trips and rebounds.

Yep I'll give you Dugdale. He was pretty bad although I didn't rate Hazell.

Perhaps we can agree on Jack Burkett and Dietmar Bruck?
  • I also give you Matt Jackson. Slower than a snail, his tactic was to bear hug his winger and should have given away several penalties a match but for lenient refs.

  • Paddy McCarthy?
  • Simon Francis without any shadow of doubt!!!
  • Paul Sturgess. Tried hard, but just wasn't good enough.
  • Anyone who mentions Diawara doesn't understand football, he was not the best player weve had down at the valley, but hes been playing champions league football and won the french league with boedeaux ffs, how is he worse than borrowdale, francis, doherty, primus, cranie etc.?

    Peter Shaw
Yes, there 'was' a time when he was absolutely awful and deserved your title as worst defender and it was during this period that I would agree with you....however, quite miraculously he improved almost overnight to become a regular member of the team and with some justification.
In the end he DID prove he could play a pretty decent game at that level and more than a few folk wouldn't have minded him staying on for another season or two.

Agree 100% Also, he was starting to look the part big time before he left us.

Context is key dippy. He was absolutely shambolic FOR US.
  • For the money we spent on him, he was the worst defender we've ever had. Couldn't tackle, couldn't head a ball.

Incredulously saw the name Linvoy Primus...I'm genuinely shocked, he was excellent for us in the four games he played....in fact I'm pretty certain he got man of the match in his final game at The Valley. I just can't believe he's been mentioned.
He left the club because of some 'shall we say' personal reasons outside of football and also at the time we were blessed with one or two other very good centre backs.
He went on to have a very distinguished career and I can asure you all that there were more than a few raised eyebrows when the announcement was made that he was leaving us.
Absolutely 'no way whatsoever' can he be described as one of the worst defenders to wear an Addicks shirt.

exactly.. You can only judge what they did for us. I know for a fact I wouldnt put John Barnes in a Charlton legends team.
