Don't need big names - but do need good players who can add something extra to what we already have - just don't think the 2 signings yesterday do that.
C'mon, course they do. Wilson covers Solly at RB where we had no cover last season and can also cover RM to supplement Green and Waggy although likely one may leave. Cook can play eithe wing and also up front so covers a variety of positions. With Hayes and Clarke likely to go it gives another option up front and takes the number of forwards to four. Another striker and that will be enough. 15-20 goals a season strikers cost but I'm sure will will arrive soon ;-)
Not really. The reason they are "big name" players is because they have been there and done it. Okay they may be at their peak but they will very soon be on the way down. In Division 2 you can pretty much guarantee they will either be well past their sell by date or way too expensive. Much better to do things the Wenger (and to an extent) the Ferguson way and bring in hungry up and coming players.
I believe that CP is a very thorough manager. I would have expected him to have 2 lists of potential transfer targets, one of relatively big money, proven championship quality (avoiding the big-time charlies) and one of the Cook/Wilson types. Which list he gets to use, and it may be some of both, to depend on the final budget. I suspect that this isn't yet set, and will also depend on any income from transfers out.

Powell built us a team last summer and nothing else. Let him do the same this summer. As watching England shows, big name players don't win you matches but teams do. Lets just focus on that.
Sorry if I offend, but for me this is a daft thread. The last thing we need is a big time Charlie to disrupt the obviously spirited bunch that CP and his team are developing. Having people like Jackson, Morrison, and Cort around will be a great example for all. Keep the faith everybody.
There are examples of relatively big names who still had the right attitude late in their careers eg Peter Beardsley ,jimmy case and billy bonds from ancient history .They demonstrate that a good player with the will to keep playing at a lower level can always be an asset well into their twilight years.unfortunately we have had our fingers burned in recent memory with some real money grabbing duffers such as JFH ,Marcus Bent and Francis Jeffers so naturally people will be a bit jaundiced by people seemingly looking for a last big pay day.personally I would have thought that the likes of Kevin Davis ,Emile Heskey or jaskelinen(now at west ham ) would have been great signings if we could attract them.probably even those would be out of our league though

I understand what you're getting at Granpa.....but not all big name signings are big time Charlies.
I get more excited seeing players hand picked from the lower leagues. It excites me more to see what they can do with their hunger as opposed to some dried up proon from the PL. Powell is sort of doing what Paul Lambert did with Norwich. Southampton are another team who didn't go for the 'big names', and now look where both teams are...
Last year I'd say the likes of hollands , wiggins , stephens and green were the cherry picked big (ish) names picked from league one Well, whilst not needing half the overhaul we had last year we've not bought anything big (ish) name wise from the championship yet but to me it's cos we haven't got the finance / immediate target of "ONE AIM" this year so midtable mediocrity will be a massive result for us , especially with the boardroom turmoil that I believe to be taking place

Remember when some said "we need an experienced manager to get promoted from League 1" - its not about big names/reputation.

In which case , its a no from me.
Why didn't we sign him? He's a big name.
We should avoid most ex-Premiership players, they will mainly be looking for one last pay day rather than being truly hungry.
Charlton isn't a club that brings big names in. It is a club where players can become big names.
