Is it me, or do you think we need some more big names coming in, its good we have young ones coming in , but i do think we need an experienced player with prem/championship experience?
Personally I think we need to sign Darren Bent, Luka Modric, Vincent Kompany, Pepe Reina, Alex Oxlade Chamberlain and Michael Essien to have a go at winning the league...
This year even before the money issues were mentioned it has always been about avoiding relegation and putting in plans to build year on year. I want good foundations laid so that if/when we go back up we have not risked everything for PL football. I eel doing it this way makes us stronger in the long run and more likely to stay there.
My fear this year is many fans expect us to sign massive names and be winning week in week out, and when this does not happen will turn and make the Valley a horrible place to be again.

Modric isn't good enough for our ambitions, we need to prise David Silva away from Man City ;-)

I like the policy of signing relative unknowns as it's not as though CP and co won't have done their homework on them. They're likely to be hungrier and put more effort in than the so called big name players.
with respect, why do we necessarily need big names who might upset the apple cart?
Powell is clearly more intent on a team with hardworking ethics and players who want to succeed or prove themselves. he talks in one of his latest interviews about how fit the team were last season and that Lawrie Wilson fits that mould. big names come with big wages and big egos a lot of the time and would do more harm than good especially in our apparently precarious financial situation.
Jesus, over the weekend there was nobody coming in and we may not exist, now a couple of decent players that Powell has clearly tracked have come in and we're underwhelmed. The squad proved last season that it was more than good enough for League One, they richly deserve the chance to show what the Champ.

When will you get it through your dense skull....we are supported by a wildly high proportion of fecking clowns.
I do think we are lacking a bit of Championship experience at the moment. Not many of our players have had spells in the champ, those that have, haven't done too great.
I think CP should be very wary of bringing in any "big names", even if he has the budget. He has built up a team whose whole is better than its parts, they work together, they win together and when they loose they dig deep together and get back to winning, such a team spirit is precious and could easy be destroyed by a big name. So Mr P I say keep going with your current type of recruitment and nurture that team spirit, it will do us better than some fancy dan.
Can one of the "get some big names in, proven in this league and Premiership" clan, please explain to me who from last years squad has not earned the right to play at this level for Charlton?
Look at a few big names he had recently, djimi traore came here as a champions league medal holder, hasselbaink, marcus bent, amdy faye, anyone still want big name signings? I would love it if we could go out there and sign namrs like ebanks blake, steve sidwell, paul robinson, ruben rochina and nedum onouoha(sp.) but its not going to happen
Don't want big names, want players which will improve us as a team and a squad.
And I'll leave that up to Powell and his team and make a judgement once we've seen them.
I was underwhelmed when we signed Kermorgant, and excited when we signed Neil Redfearn, so I know jack all !
Agree. Short memories. John Barnes, Rommendahl, Hasselbaink, Marcus Bent even were all pretty big names for us at the time but didnt have the same impact the likes of Pritchard and Kermorgant have had at our club.
Still think we are following a "Moneyball" type model ie steering clear of over valued hyped names and focusing on targetting undervalued players with potential and unrealised ability.
Id be concerned if we were shelling out on big names and paying a fortune for their signature. If they were good enough to warrant the money their clubs would keep hold of them.
Paddy Kenny isn't that good a signing IMHO. Obviously Warnock will know him well from his days at United, but I think it's hard to say that Kenny is a premiership class player. However his wages (and those of anyone else prepared to drop a division) will probably be fairly decent by comparison.
Whether we have financial security or not at this point, we should always be going for maximum value for money - the early Curbs years rather than the latter ones!
John Sullivan told me the main reason he feels we did so well last season was cause of the lack of big named players we had in the squad, they were all working hard for one and other.
Well he certainly has.....whether that's for good or whether he's bluffing no one seems to know. Could be that he's walked fullstop or could be he's just manipulating a scenario in the boardroom which is more to his liking. We of course hope very much it's the latter. Back to the subject matter, it would appear at this precise moment in time that we don't have the kind of money to splash out on more established/costlier players anyway ......mores the pity, as a couple would be great right now. It may well change of course (and I'd like to think it will) but 'right now' we are in limbo.
Don't need big names - but do need good players who can add something extra to what we already have - just don't think the 2 signings yesterday do that.

I would be happy with not going down and keeping chris Powell at this point...
he'll be free...

i would class Baldock as a big name if we got him in (which we won't). other Champs clubs/supporters might not agree.
how anybody cant trust SCP is beyond me

Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira.
Might be worth a punt?
Though doesnt Bradley Wright-Phillips have the longest name in English football?
