  • I heard a few weeks ago we were going to get 8 players in...one was to be competition for Solly, one back up for JJ....I know there has been a lot of rumour etc since then so things may have change but today's two signings both still fit what I heard so fingers crossed for more positive news soon.
  • Happy with this, he's a good player. Hope it's not to replace solly but it seems odd he'd sign to sit on the bench, despite what Powell says.
I'm very happy too - if we need two players in every position & we currently don't have anyone really challenging Solly for that right back spot - what kind of player do we sign? i think it's great that CP is bringing in quality players to challenge for positions that might otherwise seem to be nailed down

nobody knows for sure the money situation, but 400k-ish in todays market for a good player from a lower league side makes sense to me
Agreed, if that is the case then it's great. Not many clubs sign players to be squad players though, especially ones supposedly in trouble financially. You would guess a club in trouble might sign a free, youth or make do.

Perhaps it's a smokescreen, perhaps Powell doesn't know solly will be sold or perhaps it is what it appears to be - a really good squad signing who will out pressure on solly and green.
  • I reckon that as Waggy can play both sides (to an extent), finished the season strongly and is probably on less than Green, it would be Green to go. Could be either though. Or neither if it is more about depth, competition and freeing others up for different systems.
Wow Splodge, I don't think there's a base that you didn't cover here. You could be right, you could be wrong....you could be both or neither!

that was a Steve claridge type prediction!!
  • Lawrie is a proper footballer's name as well !!

Or perhaps Powell is anyway going ahead with planned team building, until he's told otherwise?

  • @OggyRed

But CP won't be signing the cheques, will he?

But SCP must have received the nod to go ahead, otherwise any signings would have been put on hold (as has quite possibly been the case up until now?).
  • And Stevenage would have been reluctant to sell to us if there was a chance we couldn't pay any instalments! Unless it was all upfront -but we are supposed to have a cash flow problem????
  • Used to watch the reserves at Aldershot a fair bit and Lawrie was my favourite player from that crop. He was unbelieveably fast and left players in his wake and I was quite sad when he didn't make it into the first team. Really glad to have him back. McCafferty next?
  • Just confirmed by club text...if it wasn't clear he had or hadn't! :)
How does one get the texts from the club?

Swisdom...you can sign up by texting - CLUB CHARL GOLD - to 88442. Costs 25p a text though and you'll probably get it on here two seconds later!! ;-)

  • Rumours that former England U-18 cap Peter Reeves may re-sign for the club, as Powell pursues a policy of signing former youth team players.

  • Correct me if i'm wrong here, but wasn't he the player who supposedly told someone on here that the club took back the offer, because we're skint, which started all this mess last week?

    @OggyRed

I reckon that's about right, Oggy. Things had been on hold and now, for some reason, they're not.
  • Correct me if i'm wrong here, but wasn't he the player who supposedly told someone on here that the club took back the offer, because we're skint, which started all this mess last week?
I think that if your assertion is correct, this should be confirmed by the itk.

    I don't think so.

Stevenage fan at work said the same thing, absolutely rapid, sad to see him go
  • Welcome back Lawrie....was he the chap that went to private school - not really important, just remember one of our ex youth players did and it was made out to be quite a big thing at the time cause it was so rare, for some reason I have a feeling it was him.
Yes he was - Millfield in Somerset, I believe. And welcome back Lawrie
Millfield....famous for sporting scolarships.....more leanings towards rugby though.......or at least traditionaly.
  • Yea I'm gutted we signed Pritchard from Hayes and Yeading bradders. What was powelly thinking ey.
Mate...im not saying he is not good. Just a bit Underwhelmed by it. Im not the only one to say it today either.
your underwhelmed by a player you havent seen play!!!!!

i really struggle to understand your method of thinking.

Never said he wasnt a good player just feel bit underwhelmed mate. You might be a bit too young to understand my method of thinking with the 'reem' picture for a profile. LOL
    Banter mate banter.

but what do you mean by underwhelmed??? who would you like us to sign?

and the reem is sarcasm...not a fan?
  • Pretty surprised if we've spent c£400k on a 'cover' player, but good news nonetheless, as SCP will defo know a good fullback when he sees one, past master and all that. Welcome Red Lawrie......
  • If we were completely broke, we could easily have found a free transfer or a loanee to come in at RB as a replacement for Solly, e.g. someone like ahem Danny Butterfield, and push Cousins through faster.

  • Gutting only 2 signings today!

No it wasn't. That was/is a Prem player.

    Cook then

Exactly... we wouldn't sell solly for £Xm and invest the some of the proceeds... we'd get freebie and make do with Hughes as backup... something must have changed.
  • Well their website is andrews-sykes.com, so I'm assuming Andrews Sykes is correct, it's two surnames, rather than one full name.
Well sadly it can't now be Eric Sykes.
    Bill Sykes

The other thing about this signing is it's like Powell is saying to the squad: 'you got us here, you deserve a crack at the Championship', which on every level seems like the right call.
Wilson is a squad player. And a bloody good one.
  • If Wilson has been brought in as cover for solly I can understand why we paid money for a 'squad' player so to speak.

Were in the championship now, and the quality of player to cover for positions has to be improved a fair bit to be able to survive in this league. If our first choice is injured, then we would be found seriously lacking if we didn't have a player able to step in who would be just as good.

I wish him the very best of his second spell with us.

    Welcome back Lawrie.

Yeah that was the point really! It could be anything...
