Best of luck to him. What heart that man had/has. Probably one of the best deals I can remember for the club, bearing in mind what he gave to us over the many years he played. A Charlton hero!
The interesting thing is if we applied to JR the instant success requirements we have for players now, he would have been booed out of the club, it took him quite a while to settle in and establish himself in the first team. Most of the time these instant judgements that some of our fans make are way wide of the mark and Robbo proves that.
One of my favourite players of all time, as a Charlton fan. Could be frustrating at times, but I used to love watching the bloke play. I remember going to an away match at Villa, I think it was the first time we went up and he was subbed. 45 minutes afterwards he was still complaining about it, before he got on the coach at villa with Peacock, when I looked out of the window looking down into the back of villa as Charlton boarded the team coach. Poor old Keith had to calm him down, to get him on the coach, as John was throwing his arms around. Perhaps he wanted to sit next to the window for all I know?.
Does anyone remover when the ball got kicked into the hedged bank inbetween the north and east stands (where the be quadrant is today) against Portsmouth and Robbo clambered all the way up there to retrieve it ? I was the ball bay covering that part of the ground that day who failed abjectly at his task ! Great player and time and again showed his commitment to Charlton
Just a pity that he has a reputation of accepting offers to appear at various supporters meetings as a guest/speaker and then doesn't turn up....done it more than once I'm afraid to say. Love him to bits though and remains one of my all time favourites.
Robbo was my favourite player when I started going to Charlton. With him and Morts, I thought we were the most skillful team on the planet. He didn't quite have enough for the Prem, but in the Champ, he was awesome.
That goal at The Valley when we drew 3-3 with Wimbledon to beat them 8-7 on aggregate. Awesome. I was right behind the goal. One of the best moments at The Valley ever.
Always remember getting frustrated with him at times because of the 'perfect goal' he was trying to score...chest knee volley...he did that sooo many times and didnt get that goal. Great Game against Birmingham away live on itv Charlton won 4-3 1995-6 season Love the fact that his name is in history for scoring CHARLTONS first ever Premiership goal. That is legend status on its own.
Ah you just beat me to it Soundas... was going to say, dont ask him to speak at meetings, he let me down twice.
Did he let you know or simply not appear?
Oh no he would always let me know on the day, first one via Steve Brown calling to say it was just him as Robinson couldnt make it, i cant remember the second time. Think a message was left via Bernard.

Used to live in the Brighton area but now lives somewhere in The Eastern States of America.
Always had a fiery edge to him, which I liked.
