What happens if you refuse to pay?

You’ll be sent a Penalty Charge Notice if you don’t pay by midnight on the day after you made your crossing.

The penalty charge is £70 and must be paid within 28 days. It’s reduced to £35 if you pay within 14 days and increased to £105 if you don’t pay. You also have to pay the crossing charge along with a £15 admin fee.
OK, what happens if we all refuse to pay!
Aha. You've hit on the basic contract of any 'democratic' society. If everyone just refuses to do something, there's no realistic way of enforcing it, short of using force. However, there is no chance this will ever happen, so it's a moot point.

I've often wondered what would happen if enough people finally got sick to death of the utterly dogshit rail 'service' that we are forced to use & pay exorbitant amounts of money for and just stopped paying for it that it - so that it became impossible to enforce fines.

Still no email with my temp password. (I didn't get any mention of receiving a "welcome pack" when I phoned.)

So I went on to the website and claimed to have forgotten my log on. Forced a change of password and looked at my basic details.
My telephone number had been incorrectly transferred from the Dart Tag system but otherwise okay.
Balance was Nil but I'm supposed to be switching my Dart Tag balance over.....

Security on the site seemed very poor and I couldn't find anywhere to top up the account either. (I haven't opted for automatic top-ups when the balance gets low.)

All seems to have been put together by a bunch of amateurs with some scissors and a Pritt Stick.

Actually both the ladies I spoke to were northerners...........so I guess you're right ;)

    Details of change over.
  • As I will be making occassional visits over the bridge, can I just pay via text or do I have to go through palarva of setting up an account first.
  • You can pay by text but it will cost £2.50. If you have an account the cost is £1.67, that is if you live outside of Dartford.
  • didn't know anything about this jeez this is going to be interesting. I use the crossing often (maybe once a month) and just chuck my two quid in the bin so it looks like that is now finished. Would welcome best advice on the best way to pay

Not sure how this can be justified in any way - Leeds has no tolls yet gets the economic benefits of a toll road 200 miles away, when the local people of that toll road were promised that the toll would be scrapped and instead it has been since hiked again and again. Can you imagine the outrage if Leeds' public transport costs went up specifically to subsidise London's transport system?
  • Once Dart Charge is in place you will be able to make one-off payments in advance or by midnight the day after crossing:

    online at www.gov.uk/dart-charge
over the phone by calling: 0300 300 0120
    via a payzone retail outlet
by post (in advance only): Dart Charge Customer Services PO Box 842 Leeds LS1 9QF

  • I have a residents account. Did the online registration switchover thingy about a fortnight ago. My welcome pack landed ten minutes ago. Not looked at it yet.
  • Got my welcome pack via email this morning. I'm a local resident with an existing account. Bloody terrible journey home again tonight from Essex, not helped by all the bloody idiots blocking up every roundabout in Dartford, remind me again what are those yellow boxes for?

    ADVANCE NOTICE
On the 1st October 2018 the charge for Class B vehicles registered to a Dart Charge account will be changing. As an account holder you will continue to benefit from a discount to the standard rate as shown in the rate table below. There are no changes to the discounted rates for any other vehicle classes.

Vehicle Class Standard Rate Account Holder Discounted Rate
(up to 22:00 on 30/9/18) Account Holder Discounted Rate
    (from 06:00 on 1/10/18)
    A - Motorcycles, mopeds and quad bikes £0.00 £0.00 £0.00
B - Cars (including trailers), motorhomes and minibuses (with 9 or less seats including the driver’s seat) £2.50 £1.67 £2.00
    C - Vehicles with 2 axles £3.00 £2.63 £2.63
    D - Vehicles with more than 2 axles £6.00 £5.19 £5.19

    Why is this change happening?
With over 55 million vehicles travelling over Dartford Crossing every year, there is an ongoing need to manage increasing demand at the Crossing.
The Government has also committed a further £10 million to reduce congestion at and around the Dartford Crossing. Highways England continue to work with local stakeholders, including Kent County Council, Dartford Borough Council and Thurrock Council, on traffic flow and safety measures that will be delivered over the next few years.
After nine years of operating a 33% discount for cars, the Government has reviewed how fairly the benefits to account holders are spread across different vehicle types and have aligned the Class B rate more closely to Classes C and D.
The new discount rate of £2.00 for Class B vehicles still offers road users a 20% reduction whilst making for a more equitable rate between different vehicle classes.
There are no changes planned for the discount rates for Class C and Class D vehicles or Local Residents Discount Scheme.
What do I have to do?
You don’t need to do anything as these changes will automatically apply and will show on monthly statements. You may wish to consider increasing your top-up amount to ensure your balance remains in credit.
If you no longer wish to be an account holder, you can close your account by emailing us at CustomerService@dartford-crossing-charge.service.gov.uk
Please note that without an account you will have to pay for every crossing made during charging hours at the standard rate for your vehicle. If payment is not made, then you may receive Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs).

Yeah, I got one of those too. Hilarious that they think (or like to pretend) that anyone, anyone at all, let alone those with an account, actually like to ruin their day by making unnecessary, expensive, deadly dull, tortuous trips across the river because they've got nothing better to do with their time.
  • Just be done with it and make it ten pounds each way. Still won't solve congestion on the worst stretch of road in the UK
  • They'll disguise it as increased maintenance costs and cite the bridge in Genoa.
  • No issue with an increase.

Massive issue with the fact it's almost a 20% increase.

And the fact that every single time you have to go through it takes you 20% longer than the last sodding time...

  • IF the money from the current and previous is actually used to build the new crossing near Gravesend, then I would grudgingly accept it...

Since they took the barriers out and changed the road layout going into the tunnel the junctions at Bob Dunn way and the Hilton roundabout are worse than ever, as someone that lives right by it I can tell you this causes many headaches round here.

If they ban the oil/petrol/diesel/gas tanker lorries going through the tunnel it would certainly help. It's insane that the left hand tunnel is controlled by traffic lights so the dangerous lorries are escorted through.

I always use the right hand tunnel and more often than not the left hand tunnel has been held at a red light while the convoy passes through.

This is one of the main reasons for the congestion.

Since they made it not possible to get across to the right hand tunnel on these occasions from the junctions I mentioned above this has only increased the problem.
  • I got a local residence account and got one of those letter through as well, I emailed them back (using the correct email address not the do not reply) to ask if they were withdrawing the fee for local residences, guess what no reply.
  • If/When they eventually build the new lower Thames crossing, the plans (I believe) are than due to the newer safety standards, these dangerous loads would not need an escort through. The logical next step is that they would then be banned from Dartford making it flow far more smoothly, even ignoring that fact that a percentage of the traffic would be diverted to the new crossing as well.

The extract fans in the original tunnel are not strong enough to cope with smoke or fumes from a fire in a dangerous load. This is why they have to be escorted.

The next alternative for dangerous loads is the Woolwich Ferry. This will be closed for 3 months from October to allow modifications to the ramps for the new boats.

Sending them the long way round the M25 would add to the congestion around Heathrow.
  • That had just reminded me....need to top-up my account before Saturday. Only good thing about travelling to Accrington is that (with a stop) we might just cross the bridge after 10pm.

We are paying extra to cover the losses from non paying foreign vehicles.
  • As of last year, 1,160,000 fines, worth over £84m, have been passed to a European debt agency, for unpaid Dartford crossing charge since it started in 2014.
