Huddersfield or Sheff U?

  • Not often that we start a season in 10th position in alphabetical order!
  • Huddersfield will sell rhodes for around 7 million and that will give them a decent budget to rebuild the side. I can see all three promoted teams staying up comfortably. Sheff u will need to find a striker from somewhere if they want to go up next year.
not a chance 7 million for a player who has only proven himself in league 1
  • No way 7 mill...

Max 3.5 I'd say and even them look at others that have smashed this league to bits and then gone on to flatter to deceive...

I thought he looked shite in a big game on the weekend...
  • Didn't nick Powell go to man u for 5 million the league 2 player? Rhodes will stay anyway I think. They've still got plenty of money though and will be a force
  • Also the commentary team seemed to have an agenda to big him up ... I suppose they didn't have much else to talk about it being such a mind numbingly dull game...

Agree, Mike......now Huddersfield are promoted, Rhodes won't be demanding to leave.
He'll probably do well enough and score 20 goals next year in the Champs.

Unless of course a cash heavy minor Prem side like QPR or Norwich offer silly money.

  • In the interview with the chairman last night he said "well unless somebody pays 15m, he's staying". Nutter.
  • Went to the game yesterday and thought both teams were poor with udders only being slightly better then the blades.
The blades are going to be in big trouble next season i think, they were toothless up front
  • £15m for Rhodes? Going by yesterdays performance, I wouldn't pay £1.5m. Was marked out of the game far too easily (as was the case when they turned up at the valley).

Funny how Smithies came out of that game as the hero. If they were up against a team that wern't too afraid to attack, he'd probably have let a hat-full in. Thought he was terrible.

Huddersfield must be so glad it was the red half of sheffield they were up against, as the wendys would have destroyed them, going on that performance.

Would love to see ginger Quinn in a charlton shirt next season..................................
  • Does anyone know if Sheff utd will have a civic reception for being runners up? as this seems to be the trend in Sheffield..............................

    ;-)

Not a nutter at all, he is saying hands off we want him to stay and will fight tooth and nail to keep him, just as we would hope Slater would say for our leading players. Rhodes should guarantee them 15 plus goals a season and could be the difference between a bottom half finish fighting relegation and a top half finish challenging for play offs.

  • So, who can we get from SheffU then ?
Simonsen? We have a history of getting good players who miss penalties in playoff finals!
  • Cannot believe that Hudds are having an open top bus parade tomorrow night, unbelievable for a team that effectively came third! Now I wish we had had a Champions parade!

Quinn should be top of our shopping list now. Always looks quality whenever I see him and he will not want to waste more time in league 1 whilst he's at the peak of his career (plus Sheff Utd will find it hard to say no to any decent offers).
  • I wonder if John Terry will turn up for it?

If you had a proud 3 times in a row 'top division' title winning history,
then you'd also want to celebrate escaping the 3rd Division after being stuck there for about 10 years!!

  • its 45 minutes on the train from london
  • You're pretty good with all these railway times, Mike.
    No wonder you're an Addick.

Not a trainspotter, by any chance?

  • lol Mike.

Now as you're a bit good at all this train times lark, perhaps you can help me out?

Now I'm leaving Liskeard station for Blackburn, to get there in time for 2 hours in the pub before the match (which is a wet Wednesday night game in November).

So what time do I need to leave home?
And I need a return train to be back home by 11.30 pm, as I've got work the next morning.

Hope you can help, thanks Mike.

  • take a couple of days annual leave show some loyalty!
  • Good point, Mike.

How about trains from Liskeard to Middlesbrough?
    Or Blackpool.
Might as well do Bolton? Sheffield? Huddersfield? Barnsley?

Best tell the GF to forget Majorca or Benidorm for her hols, as I'm spending all mine on trains going Oop North.

My in-laws live in Peterborough, it's a 1 hr 50 minutes in the car door to door. It would also take me well over an hour to get from West Malling to Kings Cross.

Roughly how many Charlton fans live within walking distance of Kings Cross?
  • obviously not many, that's not the point. It's going to take what an hour to get to kings cross for most? That means you can get to places like Peterborough in an hour 45 minutes. Is that a long time? I guess by the reaction by some in here it must be.

I don't understand this fuss about how long it takes to get to a game. I go to most of our matches in the north west because my son and grandson live in Lancashire and its a good opportunity for us to spend some time together. You can get a return train ticket up there for £30-40 if you book early enough so not a huge cost. Then you have to leave at 8.30 - 9.00 in the morning. No problem. You get on the train at Euston (or King's Cross/St Pancras for the east side of the country) at around 10.30, have a pleasant couple of hours on the journey (plenty of things to do even if on your own - newspapers/books/i-pod/catch up on sleep etc), go to the game, spend an hour or so in the pub afterwards, train home at about 7, back to London around 9.30, home by 11. Just in time for the Football League Show. How hard is that?

nah 1 hour 45 is pretty gd. But just that your figure of 45 mins was slightly misleading. It is going to be 1 of the closest away games though and our last result there wasn't bad either
  • For me it's not so much the time and money (although when the who day starts to cost close to £100 I do think that there might be more more pressing demands on the money, to be honest) the issue is that I football on 18 Saturdays this season. My wife knows that I love football, and she doesn't complain about me going to home games, and a couple of away games (I went to four this season) she has a point when she says that it might be nice if I spent time with her and our son.

I can understand why single guys (and girls) without children would go to many (maybe even all) away games, but for those of us with families it is just not fair to go out for most of the day almost every Saturday between August and May.

Until the match is moved for sky or posponed due to weather and then you're left with a useless train ticket and unable to afford the extravigant fares for a re-scheduled journey..................

  • How people could put Smithies in their league one team of the year is beyond me! People moan about Hamer coming for crosses, Smithies judgement was awful.
