  • Highbury in the clock end for the 2-2 was a fantastic game of football and my favourite away game.
  • The other thing with the 2-2 was that itvwas the week that word was beginning to get out about a return to The Valley. I think there was a meeting two nights later where they announced it, and there was a real buzz up the clock end that night.

bit of an enigma, in the same way dale stephens is?
I can see where you are coming from, but, with due respect to Dale, I think it is easy to forget that McKenzie was performing at the highest level. The class of 2012 may be a good bunch but I suspect none of them would have got into the team of that era.

  • Ricky Villa's slow motion cement mixer slalom goal for Spurs against Man city as described by John Motson in hysterical genuflecting tone is one of the classic moments of the Eithties.Right up there with Sam Fox sitting in a tank at Wapping and Chris Tarrant clowning around in TisWas! Sublime stuff for which one should be truly thankful to have been a witness

Me too, It was one of the best shots off of a knee I have ever seen!

  • I seem to recall a blatant penalty not being given in our favour when Andy Peake (or was it John Humphrey??) virtually had his shirt ripped off his back by a defender when he was clean through on goal, the referee judged it a fair challenge.

    I'm not bitter or anything...
Dead right (about Peake) albeit it was a different game where we got robbed at Highbury - earlier in the same game the ref (Alan Seville?) managed to spot a handball against Humphrey when his arms were virtually by his sides and of course couldn't wait to give a spot kick. A very big Charlton turnout was squished into the teeniest pen on the terraces, whilst Gooners on the other side of the fence were literally lying down on the terraces.
Was at the 2-2 game as well at Highbury that night. As others have said brilliant night, with a good Charlton turnout in the clock end. Always thought it was the same game that we were denied that blatant penalty too.

Clearly remember the headline on VOTV after it wasn't awarded - "Welcome to Anfield"
  • Yes I remember that headline too, and it was a shocker of a decision, but I also remember that it was a daytime game (late, late summer) the season after the 2-2. My recollection of the photo on VOTV is that there is daylight there.....I'm sure someone else on here can confirm one way or another...
  • FA Cup Final goalscorers with a "Z" in their name.......... anyone ??????

Teenage sensation who never quite lived up to expectations. On his day a terrific footballer, even though he was ex Palace, skilful and hard: Glen Hoddle crossed with Billy Bremner

  • Did Zenden score in a cup final?

Meant to post this this morning....it was the relegation season (89-90), we lost 1-0 when we had the most blatant penalty ever turned down. Think it was Peakie who got scythed down, Kevin Richardson it was who took him out. Lennie Lawrence said afterwards that in four years of away games in the first division, it appeared that none of our players had been fouled in the home teams box as we hadn't won a single penalty. Sarcastic, but statistically true.
