Turnstile Operatives

edited April 2012 in General Charlton
My son was unable to atteend the match on Saturday as he was playing in the band at the Orchard in Dartford, so as on previous occassions this season (4) he could not make it I took along my 11 year old grandaughter, we went to our usual turnstile 8 upper west, I went through as did my grandson, but my granddaughter was refused entry as she was trying to use an adult ST. I thought the operative was joking but she insisted that this was her instructions, a queue began to build, it was only when I said we would not be moving until she called her supervisior that she relented telling me not to try it again. My grandaughter was near to tears as she thought she would have to sit outside and miss the game. Has anybody else experience this? Anyway she has been 5 times this season and we have won on each game so I am thinking of buying a season ticket of her own next season.

  • Outrageous. Absolutely ridiculous.
  • Had a couple of issues over the past season similar to this.

That's why they work at the turnstiles........
  • That's crazy - it's a more expensive ticket! I did it for 5 years at school/Uni time and would obviously have let her straight in.

It's becuase they now use stewards rather than turnstile operators who do it every week, so rather than have some common sense they do exactly as they were told.
  • Jobsworth of the year! Over the top reaction.

However, ST's are non-transferable and if the holder is not going to use it they are obliged to inform the club so the empty seat can be put up for sale.

Bit like Refs having to abide by the letter of the law or they get docked points by the assessor in the stands. Maybe there is a Turnstile assessor?

Have you used your hosepipe recently?

or get the sack. Stupid I know but some people need any income thay can get. Don't blame the person on the gate, blame those giving the stupid orders.

  • what an idiot

Yes and no, I suspect they were told to look out for people on the wrong ticket, meaning Adults on a child etc, and took it the other way too of their own accord.

So sounds like the person telling them what to do didn;t explain it properly, but they also displayed a complete lack of common sense. Why would the club have an issue with someone coming in with a more expensive ticket than they should?
  • I think airman said s/t's are now transferable (within price category) - but I could be mistaken.

  • one game earlier in the season, I handed over my ticket and was let through. When I got up into the stand I removed my ticket from my pocket to check my seat number, only to realise that instead of handing my ticket to the turnstile operator, I'd given him the receipt that came with it (for those who don't order tickets by post, this is printed on a blank ticket).

Seems I found one who couldn't be arsed to check......................
  • Quite susprised really, usually they look so dis-interested I could have walked in with a Palace season ticket and they wouldnt notice.

No. He is talking out of his backside.
    Look at your ST.

"Charlton Season tickets are transferable between Charlton Athletic Supporters of the same age bracket as defined in the club's pricing structure"
  • I saw one smoking in the toilets once.
  • Sounded believable though didn't it? In a sort of PC gone mad type of way......

Seriously though that was the case in the Prem days and I think it is a FA Prem rule.
  • Exactly, Huskaris - and by pointing out the age bracket they clearly mean you can't get a cheaper one than you should, not a more expensive one.

So I stand by what I said - the turnstile operator (steward) has not had what they should do explianed properly, and has also not used any common sense.

Yeah I agree with you, I was arguing about the non transferrable to other people bit.

It seems like the steward has followed what they were said almost too much. I am 99% sure to that what you say about "what they should do has not been explained properly" is exactly the case. I am sure that the club would NEVER have instructed them to turn away an under 18 with an adult ticket... Ridiculous...

I remember once being told in Sainsbury's that I could not buy alcohol (despite being 20 at the time) because they had a think 25 policy... Cue getting the manager over.... Haha.

Not really no. Don't believe that is Prem rule. There's no way clubs can resell already sold season ticket holders seats just cos that person can't attend, and certainly not demand that.

  • if it was an adult using a kids ticket then fair enough, but a kid using an adult ticket ffs..
  • what an idiot
    Who?

Who ?... the person on the turnstile thats who !!
  • Have upgraded my daughters season ticket quite a few times this year and 99% of the time the turnstile operator has not let me in and said "you're not 11" (not a difficult spot!) even though the ticket has UPGRADE stamped all over it.

On Saturday however the turnstile operator let me in whilst saying 'you look a bit older than 11'. He too had missed the UPGRADE but was letting me in anyway!

Peanuts & monkeys comes to mind.

    Millwall can.

I think they still have a similar policy at the mini Tesco's at Sidcup station. It doesn't affect me personally but it does bug me cos I can't get my head round why shops are even allowed to set their own service age limit. The law of the land stipulates 18 years of age and that should be it full stop.
If they get a slapped wrist for selling booze to underage customers then they should tighten their checking procedures, not simply up the age limit to create their own little `buffer zone'.

Anyway, a bit off topic there....but I fully sympathise with the OP, infuriating position especially with a queue forming behind you...AARRGGHH!!

Done this with my kids ticket a few times as well this season, always causes a problem, even with upgrade stamped all over it, frustrating having to argue with someone about it when you've paid the extra.
