Charlton Ath v Wycombe Wanderers - 21 April 2012 - Preview, Views, Line ups and News

So after three years there are just three games left. Only three more times will we play in what used to be called division three.

With the One Aim of promotion achieved it would be tempting to suggest that we are due a "traditional" Charlton end of season slump but this side is made of sterner stuff and there is still the small matter of the league title.

If we better Sheffield Utd's result at MK Dons The Addicks will take the Championship of the third tier for the third and (because I hope we never again sink to this level) last time.

Standing in the way are a Wycombe side still desperately clinging onto their hard won League 1 place. They currently sit in 21st, three (there is that number again) points behind Orient and safety.

With games v Notts County and Sheffield Massives to come it does not look good for them but they can not mathematically be relegated on Saturday. For a while it seemed they might escape but too many draws and the loss of Paul Hayes seem to have all but ended what was a realistic chance of survival only a month ago.

Goal scoring has not been a problem for them. If you count cup goals Stuart Beavon has outscored BWP this season. It is at the other end where the Chairboys struggle. They have the worst defensive record in the division, something that was proved when they decided that Gary Doherty was the player to help them reduce the current average of more than 2 goals conceded per away match.

The unkind might joke that Charlton should have insisted that the Doc play in this game but we at Preview Towers would never be so cruel.

The Charlton team seems likely to be substantially the same as in recent weeks. Green may return from illness but he may struggle to dislodge Haynes or N'Gussen/Wagstaff from the bench. Any changes made are more likely to be a few bench warmers swapping place with starters.

The Gaffer may be tempted to rest some tired limbs and give some the academy boys a run out at some time but maybe not until the tin pot has been secured.

It has been raining all week. On a slick and fast pitch Charlton's pace and power will be too much for the Wanderers and will shall witness a drubbing. 5 or maybe even 6 - 1 to the Champions elect.

  • in keeping with the 3 theme, 3-1.

hoping the boys will go out with the mindset that they are now responsible for not only winning this division but also securing CP the Manager of the Season award.
  • I'm expecting the lads to turn on the style. A thumping win followed by scenes of jubilation as Sheff Utd fail to beat MKDonalds
  • 4-0 Jackson 2 Kermigant , Morrison.
  • I think we'll play free of fear now, flowing football and a few goals, 4-0 home win for me.
  • I don't think we've won by more than 4 goals in this league.

Would love to go out with a bang: 6-1
  • 3-0 JJ, Kermogant & BWP
  • Think we will edge it 2-1.

Sheff Utd and MK Dons will draw. We tie it up..

Oh sod it, my superstition has worked all year. Should I stop now?

2-0 Wycombe, Sheff Utd win 8-0 at MK Dons, 10 point deduction after the game for Charlton for accidentally fielding 12 players as Doc sneaks on the pitch after 85 minutes.
  • A game we should win but I wonder which of the players will be rested - there are several who are carrying injuries and/or look a tad jaded and CP might choose to allow them to start their summer holidays early.

I'd like to see Evina given a game and one or two of the academy players get into the squad and perhaps sit on the bench and if things go well get a few minutes at the end.
  • @BlackForestReds can't see SCP doing that until we have it won, think it'll be our strongest available side
  • Is Danny Hollands back now as well?

One more match left in his suspension.

You are probably right, CP has selected his starting players from a reasonably small pool of players and without checking the numbers I wouldn't mind betting that we've used fewer players this year (in league matches) than in any of the last few seasons. So I doubt that ther will be wholesale changes.
  • League 1 highest home score Gillingham-10 Chesterfield-0, 05.09.1987

    Can we beat it? ;)
  • usual Charlton end to a season...........they need it more than we do - Wycombe to win 3-0
  • 2-0 home win.

Another record to add to the many this season perhaps?!

I do feel that we will play with a lot more freedom but Wycombe are playing for their lives. I see it being tighter than most have predicted so 2-1 to us. And Blades to win so have to wait another week...

    Go on my son!
  • I am really looking forward to the game now. To some degree the pressure is off and i feel that will come through on the pitch and we will see a bit more free flowing football that we have off late.
  • I admit to being unduly pessimistic with my forecasts from superstition at times but now ONE AIM is achieved I do have a nagging feeling that Wycombe might want it more than us and we will have to come from behind (ooh ah Misses!) 1-1

  • don't know about the score but if i was betting on the goals market I'd do over 5.5!
  • We can hopefully now play without the nerves

    3-1 win

    Bwp, Kerm, waggy
  • Unless last weeks promotion has really taken our eye off the ball it's hard to see anything but a victory. Not as easy as we would hope and I reckon a scare before coming out as 3 - 1 winners. A brace for BWP and a screamer from Stephens.
  • 4 - 1 win. Usual line up to start, taking the well deserved applause, first half exhibition stuff followed by a second half with 3 players needing game time entering the fray.
  • we win, Sheff Utd win, title secured at Preston
  • I expect us to keep another clean sheet and knock in at least 2 goals. The players will be well aware that CP expects them to keep up the momentum at least until that cup is ours. If we're not 2 up by half time I expect CP to fire them up for the 2nd half.
  • 3-0 to the lads, Sheff Utd draw, all on the pitch!

    CHAMPIONS!
  • We'll win at a canter, they are appalling, and looking at their messageboards they've written this game off. Fear free Addicks in the mood to entertain and win by a few
  • 3 0 BWP twice and Wagstaff but i think we will win the title next week at Preston.
  • If we score a couple early it could be a thrashing - their heads will drop and we'll be partying.

My gut feeling is a boring 0-0 or unlucky defeat, but that's not based on this season, that's based on the rest of my Charlton-supporting life.

So in SCP I trust... 9-0
