  • Its all well and good slating them now. Fact is we finished 13th the season before and was in absolute freefall. We had dropped half a division every year for about five years up until that point.

Not a single Charlton supporter had us down to absolute storm to 1st place.

There is a big difference in putting some money on your own club to do something and genuinely believing they are going to be the top team after just finishing 13th the season before.

I can imagine the odds to bet on Charlton were healthy enough to tempt many to put a bit of dosh on the line just in case.

Had many been asked at the start of the season "who is going to win the league?", I guarantee you that very, very few would have put us down.
    Why?

We bought in some top top players, with a reputation as being amongst the best in the league, even before we had seen them play.

I agree that we werent billed as 'hot favourites' by our own fans, but after pre-season there was certainly a greater element of expectation.

Yes, there was greater expectation, from myself included. But many of our supporters were looking at the Playoffs and would have been happy with that.

The difference between finishing 1st and 6th in this division is absolutely enormous.

For crying out loud, many of our supporters were blubbering a few weeks ago about the possibility of us blowing it with only a few games to go and a 6 point lead!!
  • Will let you know when i have finished counting my winnings :)
  • They might just have got Carlisle and Rochdale spot on.
    2 out of 24 ain't bad. :-)

We have some freak fans, no doubt some believe we will still finish second! Look at Henry's thread, loads put big money on us to win the league at the start of the season.
  • In slight mitigation, I think the article came out when we'd only made a couple of signings.

That said, 18th still seemed very low at The time, and even worse now with hindsight!
  • 4 4 and 2 .. the individual IQs of the three editorial staff
  • Does anybody here actually bother reading it or are they just basing their opinions on where they predicted one League One team to finish one season?
  • Yes, I read which is why I noticed the prediction.

Its an good magazine although it can be a bit hit and miss.

But in this instance they got it very wrong.
  • At the beginning of the 2010/11 season, how many would have expected us to finish as low as 13th?

Football predictions are extremely difficult to make at this level. If it was so easy then we would all be rich.

  • I can't read....
  • Tom do you work for 442?

As you say predictions are difficult but if you're betting your own money then you aren't doing it to just chuck it away you do it because you think you have a chance of some return.

So you bet on Charlton to win the league because you believe they will win the league.

If thats not what you expect you bet on the team you believe will win it.
  • 442 prediction staff did not do proper research, when making their predictions. Not enough thought either. If you looked at the quality of the players brought in and the fact that the club was on a much better financial footing, the low prediction was ridiculous.

I've had a look for some of our prediction threads for the last couple of seasons. Plenty of decent shouts in them - Bedsaddick predicting a 13th place finish for last season being one example.

This seasons threads are worth a bump.
  • I'm happy with that : - )

    "Henry Irving

    Prediction: top three

Expectations: solid team playing winning football but more Southampton than Brighton. Hayes and Taylor the unsung heroes.

Hopes: That the dip that will come at some time during the season won't be met by Booing and calls for Powells head.

Bonus; we achieve at least level 2 academy status and have, by seasons end, more ST holders than last time.

Looking forward: the Academy and scouting networks continue to grow and so add good young players to what is already a young side. Average age of players stays low and we are seen as a desirable place for promising young players to join."
  • Henry, you are the oracle!
  • we should do a Charlton Life one for the Championship next season
We should one for football magazines:

    1. When Saturday Comes
    24. Fourfourtwo

    I've been called worse : - )

Very nearly an anagram of ORACLE ?

  • would be good to do more leagues as just for champ you would have a lot of people getting it correct.
i ran this at my old bank for the PL for over twenty years. About 30 people entered each year. Never did anyone predict it exactly right. In fact not even close.

Exactly who said that we were going to blow it?????? Some said that we still were not over the line and not confirmed as promoted. This was fact. Read what people say not what you want to read.

I bet on us to win the league. I thought we'd win it before the season started. Just because you weren't in the know, don't presume none of us were :-)
