  • Anyone who thinks Hudson is crap doesn't know anything about football.

Bingaddick got it absolutely spot on with his post. It is a combination of factors which lead to overall team performances on the pitch, not only the merits of an individual player.

You could have had Nemanja Vidic playing for us at CB and we would still have gone down in 2009.
  • Decent player, especially in the air. Well remember his debut v Swansea when he cleaned out three consecutive dangerous looking corners. As others have said, he suffered badly from playing with weaker defenders and a very poor midfield. You can be the best defender in the world but if your midfield allows wave after wave of attack, then you're going to look stretched. He possibly also suffered with the pressures of captaincy. It doesn't suit everyone.

It was a funny old goal last night. I guess our own weird long range goals would feature Talal's two funnies....the long free-kick at home to Birmingham and his crazy low long shot/cross at home to Sheff Utd.
  • My initial comment was about how he was rubbish at Charlton (or relatively so) when he was much more successful elsewhere, which is a reflection of the poor state of the club at the time. Players like Hudson, McCarthy, Ambrose have all looked like decent Championship level players since leaving us.

I never understood why we sold McCarthy soon after pinching Hudson from Palace, as that was one area where we didn't have much cover. Pardew made a real hash of his squad balance during his spell at the Valley. I'd forgotten about Ward, he looked a decent player and played well with Hudson, having played with him before.

There was a "sickness" at the heart of the club which was dragging it down. When teams fall into decline, sometimes you just have to hit rock bottom before coming back up. I don't think that with Morrison, Taylor and Cort in the Pardew/Parky team it would have stopped us being relegated.

What has happened this season is a complete transformation of attitude as well as personnel. With a new attitude comes a new resolve. I have not seen this resolve in a Charlton team since the promotion and early Prem years under Curbs.

Niall Quinn said in the warm up of Wigan and Arsenal on Monday that Wigan's players were extremely focussed and full of resolve whereas Arsenal players were laughing and joking and stroking it around like a Monday morning training session. Result a win for Wigan. It really is largely about what goes on between the ears. Motivation, team ethic, playing for one another and the confidence that brings will always mean an effective team will perform greater than the sum of the parts.

During the dark times under Pardew and Parky, that was lost and CP has re-created it pretty much from scratch. Where he has succeeded beyond even the most optimistic of projections is that he fashioned this so quickly and kept the momentum going through the whole season. That makes me believe that the qualities we all recognise in him suggests that he may also be special at a managerial level as well.
