What will happen to the "squad players"

edited April 2012 in General Charlton
What will happen to the likes of Evina/Hayes/Hughes. From the outside it looks like CP isn't a fan on Hayes, could he be sold in the summer? Surely Hayes isn't content just to sit on the bench but when he's played this season he's done well. Not sure what's going with Hughes, he hasn't featured in a while, has he been injured all this time? As for Evina he's played twice (i think) in the league this season and is just playing second fiddle to Wiggins. Will they be given the chance to prove themselves in the championship or will CP be ruthless and show them the door?

  • I imagine Evina will stay ( he's only young so may go out on loan ) and Hughes will probably stay ( experienced at this level and can play a few positions )
  • I think it will depend on who comes in. We need cover for each position so unless another left back is coming in Evina won't be going anywhere. Same for all positions I'd imagine, so untill the 'INS' are sorted its just a guessing game.
  • What's so good about this season, is that there are very few that you would want to bomb out. Each and every one has given all they could whenever called upon. I think it'll be a question of management deciding who has the potential to step up a division and hold their own in the League consistently. On that basis, would expect Doc, Euell, Hayes, Clarke and Alonso to all be off, with half a dozen quality players coming in as 1st team regulars, which will have current 1st teamers fighting to play to their maximum potential.

One thing is for sure I hope that a fair number of the current 1st 11 are rewarded with regular games in the Championship, regardless of where that leaves us, as this bunch have shown themselves to give a damn and that's really appreciated.
  • I think all 3 could do a job in this league, but they'll all be second choice players, so it'll depend on whether they are happy to do that. Either way each of them has done well when called upon. Personally I hope Euell stays in some capacity.
  • I would be surprised if SCP doesn't change the whole team and keep only a few players like last season.

    I would be stunned!
  • Sorry I meant I wouldn't be surprised, I think he will keep the young players and maybe bringing more experienced players use to the championship

I think this squad is good enough to be close to mid-table Championship without changing a thing.

  • I think he will consolidate, experiment a bit, and refine his tactics. He must realise that the backs to the wall atrition of 2nd half of season isn't the way to move us forward.

We were brilliant at the beginning of the season grinding out results whilst also spanking lesser teams like most top teams do. I am just glad we are up!

  • Having watched a number of Championship games this season I do think we need to strengthen the squad for next season. We're fine at the back but we'll need more creativity in midfield, some pace out wide and at least one other quality striker. The thing we are really lacking is pace--only Wiggins can easily go past players--Wagstaff is quick but rarely does anything when he gets into good positions and I reckon he'll struggle at Championship level.
  • I Expect to see all Centre Mids apart from Hollands and Stephens jettisoned with some quality additions added. I think he'll keep faith with the back 5 with maybe a RB come CB added as a squad player coming in. We still need cover on the left wing so someone will come in there. Think one of Waggy or Green might be replaced. Up front Hayes will be gone if we find a taker, not so sure abot Haynes as it is handy having blistering pace to bring on late in a game.

Think quite a few will go - first teamers like Green, Stephens, Cort and Taylor will be the squad players.

We shall see though - all depends on investment and SCP!

I really rate Taylor (and have done for years due to having seen a load of Exeter games) but it wouldn't surprise me to see him leave. We only have 5 subs again next year (unless the rules change) and I imagine Cort would be the defensive one if someone new comes in.

Norwich had a centre back that is now at Scunthorpe who was a rock in League 1 but not given a chance in the Championship. Unfortunately for him, I think Taylor may be the same
  • We need a 4th CB to replace Doc, as clearly Mambo isn't considered good enough, but I don't see any of the current 3 being let go, seeing that you could argue that this has been our biggest strength this season.

The weaknesses are further forward, we've been overrun in midfield against some poor teams. Also, is BWP good enough for the Championship, as his finishing has been pretty poor in the 2nd half of the season (if you consider the number of chances he's had) and next season we'll create fewer opportunities to score? His previous track record at Championship level is nothing special.

JJ will be important for his dead ball skills. A good free kick or corner into the box will trouble defences in all divisions,

    .
  • We'll try to find them new homes but if not then im afraid they will probably be put down.
  • Think Hughes will stay for experience. I think waggy will stay for a bit but if he doesn't make a big step up for next season in terms of producing a final ball, i think he'll be off on loan, or possibly be off all togehter.
I'd love to see a quality left winger coming in (or maybe see what happened to Bover, who was making serious waves in pre-season) so then JJ can move into the centre, a partnership of JJ and Hollands could work excellently i think, and could handle Championship teams.
I don't think Green will cut it unless he improves work rate or something, he really dropped away in second half of this season, mayeb he was injured i don't know. But I think if Waggy developed better final balls he'd be superior in every way, and that would only take hard graft on waggys part.
Evina will stay. Cover will be bought in for RB, and another CB, all the defenders will stay. Keepers will be fine.
Some CMs will come in, hopefully Russell. Could do with an extra touch of class in the mid sometimes.
  • i reckon we will lose atleast 10-13 players

    and get 15 in

hope you're right cos the championship will be a lot tougher to grind out results and with more mobile centre forwards i'm not convinced that morrison will be up to it or that hollands and co have the legs in midfield
    onwards and upwards

  • My guess is it'll be 5 or 6 out and 5 or 6 in. Which players are out of contract this summer?

Just a thought but with better teams in the Championship (lots of ex Prem) more quality and less physical might suit BWP
    Just a thought!
  • Dont think Mozza will be one that goes,

Cort i believe will be the first signing we make that man is my favorite CH in years absolute Beast of a player his performance for us Saturday was the best CH defensive display i have seen all season , and Mozza and Taylor have had a fair few great games so its saying a lot
  • Cort signed a permanent deal in January, NLA
  • i thought it was just a year henners
