WHY ARE WE NOT ENJOYING IT MORE ?

  • The fact I've been to all home games this season without being a season ticket holder is evidence to me that I'm enjoying this season far more than the last 3 years.

Paid £50 for both of us to see the game yesterday and sat in the Lower West in the pouring rain with a hangover. Worth every penny. (once I'd warmed up).

Loving it, and gutted that Wycombe is my last game of this season.
I bet your dad was loving it as well :-)

Well, he's got to split it with my uncle as they went half each. not bad though considering he only joined Valley Gold last week. I think that made up for Jackson playing.
  • 15,000 plus against walsall is a good turnout, i have been enjoying the season, how can any true supporter not?? 91 points and been top since september beating most our rivals along the way.

Anyone who thinks the away support is bad is stupid imo, over over 1,200 to the sheffield clubs, sold out bournemouth, stevenage, 7,000 to fulham.......600 to oldam is good to considering the cost.
  • 15K is a decent crowd bearing in mind that Walsall didn't bring many. Bear in mind we are still attracting more fans than our nearest two South London rivals and they are playing in a higher league. The recession is still biting and football is not the cheap afternoon's entertainment it once was.
  • In answer to the original question...possibly also because since Xmas it hasn't been especially entertaining (quite a few dour matches). Plus 3rd Division football just doesn't catch the imagination of the waverers and at £20+ quid it's pretty expensive.
  • Less cash around these days. I average 10-15 games a season these days, but haven't been to the Valley since November. Just can't afford it at the mo.
  • loving it apart from the fact i regret not having a score on us at the start of the season to win the league at 16/1!!!!!!
  • It's easy to enjoy if you have no other worries. As sound as said at the top of the thread these are the most worrying times for many years. I'm not old enough to confirm but many say since the second world war. For people who retired 6 years ago you may be alright the country had gone through 18 years of what we thought was growth and prosperity. Well sorry us (I mean the 20 year old's to 65 years old's) despite thinkin we had it made up to 4 years ago are goin to or are felling the pressure and biggest squeeze for many a year. I have 3 kids and 2 of them are teenagers I employ 9 staff, well I can tell you AFKA I am shit scared, after the fact Hamer and Morison don't talk or like each other are the least of my worries. But if they did kiss and hug it would make life easier.
How do you know they dont like each other? Did i miss something?

  • @Curb_It they we're sending each other abusive messages in the Activity section at the top...the doughnuts.

"@morro: your mum smells! - IfIhadaHamer"
"@IfIhadaHamer: not as much as your sister - morro"

All that sort of thing that thanks to Bart we are going to miss out on now!
  • It's League 3 and yes there are some rather small clubs in it but is all the football that bad ? Yes some teams are over physical and can be a bit averse to keeping it on the deck but not all by any stretch. I have been pleasantly surprised by some of the neat and tidy passing of some teams we have played and on more than one occasion I think our midfield has played second fiddle to the opposition. I think we are overly prejudiced against this division because many of us including me don't think we should be in division three and are embarrassed to be there. This is not taking the "massive" deluded stance of Sheff Wed but an observation made over three seasons. Yes we need out of League One and good riddance to it but I don't think the standard has been so awful compared to how it used to be back in the day. Just my view.

  • sorry but my home enthusiasm is 200% but i cant justify £300 for us to go to these crap northern grounds again this year some havent even got cover!! maybee its because i drive past brighton and think these are the type of grounds i want to be in not some concrete open terace 5hours away
  • ah only 16s i got 20s cant wait to fleece william hill in a few weeks!!
  • My enjoyment has been on the decline for a while. My passion was reignited when we got relegated from the Prem - it turned into pain. The Parky years (for all his effort) were the worst.

Even so, I should be enjoying it, going to grim northern grounds on the lash..... Life changes though and with a young family it's difficult/impossible to do it, for me at least. This will be the first season since 1984 I haven't been to an away game, 10 years ago I wouldn't miss a game all season. Thing is, I'd rather go to Spotland than Goodison.

Add to that only going to 8 home games (even having a ST) and them seemingly most of the lower quality ones, including the two recent losses and it feels like I have missed the season.

I'm excited we are on the verge of promotion but I don't really feel a part of it anymore.

Stop whinging East Terrace, man up & tell the Mrs you're in charge :-)
  • we knew that at the start of the season we had 'one aim' go up or face the music, so we havnt been able to enjoy it as much as say a club who who hadnt so much pressure on them and went along winning games and got promoted, the season we got to wembley the place was buzzing with excitment and what if is.. the past month its been sheff utd keep winning we cant blow it can we? so we havnt had the fun.
  • Our success this season has clearly been built on defence, especially since the turn of the year. 19 of our 27 wins have been to nil, and 7 of our last 11 wins have been by a 1-0 scoreline. You could make a credible Player of the Year case for each of Solly/Wiggins/Taylor/Morrison, and even Hamer has been very consistent with just a couple of blips.

With the defence keeping a clean sheet in nearly half of the matches, we have had 'enough ways to score' at the other end (eg. Jackson free-kicks, Kermo headers, etc.) to secure narrow wins, even if it we didn't dominate possession or even look like the better side.

From a pure football success perspective, this has been great and looks to have been enough to secure promotion - I think the second half of last season with hindsight got rid of any naivety that Powell might have had about trying to build a successful passing side in the space of just one pre-season (even with better players).

However this approach does imply that our performances (particularly at home for some reason) haven't exactly set the pulses racing, even if the end result was a good one. This may not bother the hardcore fans, but I think it does help explain why attendances have not spiked outside of cheap ticket promotions, despite being top for essentially the entire season.
  • I'm writing without reading a lot of the posts but from my point of view, explaining where my mentality is at currently;

In 06-07 we thought we were doomed, Pardew took over, we managed to scramble out of the bottom 3, gave us all hope (i remember watching us beat Newcastle 2-0 on a sunday and thought "we are safe and too good to go down), and then we ran out of puff and were suddenly down.
In 07-08 we still had the faith in Pardew, he signed 1200 players and for a while it looked as though we would be in the top two. Then the loans kicked in, we sold Andy Reid, and faded, so yet more hope destroyed.
in 08-09 the squad had been tweaked, and for the first 3 games (especially after the Reading match) it looked like we had a shot. We then fell apart, sacked Pardew, installed Parky and for the rest of the season played catch up after a 3 month winless streak, ultimately being relegated, such an awful feeling.
In 09-10 it was clear the money was tight, players had gone but we had retained Bailey, had Lloyd Sam, Deon Burton, and were consistent all season, never losing two league games on the trot. Again, we flirted with the idea of being automatic (was it ten minutes in second on the final day?), but ultimately ended up in the play offs. Awful first leg, a lucky 2-1 defeat, but then proceeded for 70 minutes in the second leg to play our best football of the season. Swindon down to 10 men, 2-0 up, could we believe.........no, hope taken away again, the penalties leaving me a broken man.
10-11 less cash, lower quality players, but again for half a season we showed spirit and quality and had some hope. Then we are taken over, SCP comes in, we win four on the trot, surely this is the dream ticket.........we collapse and I'm gutted again.

The last five seasons have affected me so much as a supporter and dragged my emotions all over the place, but mainly downwards in the end! I think the 7 seasons in the Premier League affected me more than i thought it did, maybe I expected to do well rather than be grateful for being in the promised land. I should be bathing gloriously in the fact we have 91 points and are top, but I have a knot in my stomach which has been there for about a month, its almost like I expect something to rip it away from me at the last minute (not helped by the fact that 91 points has been enough for automatic promotion in every season in the Champ/1/2 since 2001).

I can't help being cautious (apologies for not having massive nuts), but until we are over that finishing line I'm taking nothing for granted.

After reading that back, this might be in the wrong thread!! I also think the support is pretty good for League One!
  • Really enjoyed the posts in this thread, thanks those who've contributed.
