What does JD have to do to pass the Liam from Charlton Life "genuine fan test"? He could've supported the Gooners, Chelsea or Spurs but he's stayed loyal to his "local" team. He's a working fella, who happens to be a celeb, supporting his boyhood club! That is all Ffs! Not everyone's cuppa tea granted, but I'm not sure he really gives a toss what Liam from Charlton Life thinks of him, his work or anything else come to that.
I can't speak for Liam, but he could have chosen to support Charlton when his career was on the up, rather than becoming a director of Bournemouth.
OK, fair play that he has come 'home'. So we can forgive......but not forget
When his career was 'on the up' do you think he had the time to go to The Valley or all our away days every Saturday? No, of course not. Even from when he first come onto the scene back in the 70s, he has always talked about Charlton and his passion for them.
You talk about him becoming a director of Bournemouth as if he went for the glamourous, celebrity option instead.
I saw him live in Dartford a few years back. He must have brought Charlton up about four or five times. We had just lost to Northwich Victoria, which he made a couple of jokes about, but at least he didn't hide away from it.
Read my post again Liam, I said that I'm not sure HE really gives a toss what you think as HE would've had a lot more bigger critics than you in his time, of that I'm certain.
He had time to go to Bournemouth, basically. You're OK with Jermain Defoe leaving us for W Ham are you - i guess he doesn'tt 'have time' to play for us.
(Honestly) I'm not going to keep banging on about this. Clearly JD has renewed commitment to us, and it's good to see, Crowds of 15,000 for Div 3 football are bound to contain plenty of people who shunned us in the 1980s. But let's not forget that shunned is exactly what he did, so can we tone down the "stayed loyal" comments because it's patently not true.

OK, I'll take the stuck record off now
And do you think that he followed Bournemouth home and away during his time there?
We are in the lowest division we have been in in a long time, and he is still prepared to follow us all over the country. It's not as if he is just clinging on when we're doing well.
Amazed by some of the stuff coming out in this thread. I'm sure his reputation is going before him. Had it been any other 'celebrity' it wouldn't be a debate.

I'm no expert on Jim's career, but is it not feasible that that the time of "that" photo on the pitch a Bournemouth, he could have been working a long season doing panto on the south coast. Indeed, I wonder if that's now why so many of the sightings of him seem to be at south west away matches, perhaps these are the games that tie in with his work commitments.
Down the years I've seen JD and Michael Grade for that matter, at plenty of unglamourous games. Grade used to sit a couple of rows in front of me at Upton Park and witnessed classics like the 3-0 loss to Grimsby on a cold tuesday night, long before he was on the board. You don't sit through stuff like that to get in Hello! magazine.
Jim Davidson turned up a lot, remember him hanging out of the window a Roller on the M4 at about 80mph waving at a coachload of us headed fo Bristol Rovers in about 1978. That was at Eastville, a fairly bashed up ground that was.
TBH I don't think Charlton have ever been trendy enough to attract the celebrity bandwagon jumpers you see elsewhere, like Zoe Ball transferring her alleigance from Liverpool to Man Utd - as you do.
Wouldn't read too much into him being on the board at Bournmouth. I recently met up with an old mate of mine in London. A mad Hammer all his life who ended up on the board at Birmingham for about six years. When I questioned him on this he replied "when you're offered a place on the board of a club without having to make any investment, you don't turn the opportunity down". It may well have been a similar situation with JD

Get a grip guys - he is an average comedian who supports Charlton. Do West Ham get so upset about Alf Garnett ?
Now he was funny.
