Parker hasn't got much longer left imo. Couple of years maybe? We need someone long term. Ideally it would be Joe Hart for me, very vocal, passionate. But I hate having a keeper as a captain as they obviously can't communicate with the whole field.
I think the captain is a red herring , ie it doesn't matter who the captain is the team is pretty shocking , but yep why not Parker if he's fit , they've been going potty on Talksport for Gerrard to have it , i know he got a hat trick this week, i think he's not as good as he was, and he's very injury prone.
During an official press conference Stuart Pearce was asked about the England captaincy prior to the Holland friendly the other week. His responce was this:
"When I bear in mind it might be a one-off scenario, the captain has got to be somebody who is in the starting XI, somebody who's got the respect of the other players in my eyes and someone who is unselfish and puts the group above himself. That's a vital commodity as captain."
He then ignored Gerrard who was in most peoples eyes the obvious choice. I think it says something about Gerrard, something that a number of people within football think of him. Great player but not a team player. Besides, Gerrard had his chance before and blew it so Parker for me also.
John Terry's performance the other night for Chelsea confirms what Capello knew i.e. there is only one viable choice for captain of England in the euros.
The question said permanent which at the very least means long term, which for me cuts out people like Parker and Terry. For me Joe Hart looks the best choice. Sad to see how many us, me included, who have lost interest in the England team. We have been paying foreign managers a fortune to turn us off, which is yet another criminal act by the FA. Eng

Depends what your definition of long term is. For me it is per tournament including the qualifiers. Goalkeepers have never appealed to me to wear the armband it should be an outfield player. So Parker is ideal for the moment and assuming he will still be fit and good enough leave him in situ for the next World cup campaign. By that time some of the younger up and coming stars can be assessed such as Jones of Manure.
Dont care....they are just primma donnas anyway...lost interest in the England team a long time ago.
same here. It seems that anything associated with `ingerland' is usually cringeworthy.
Me too, England will always be the bridesmaid and never the bride in future World Cups and Euros, average quarter final team that might squeak into the semi's once in a while.
Don't want Stuart Pearce anywhere near the decision making process...good motivator but thick as two planks...Fraizer Campbell in the last squad? Really?!
Hopefully at least this time we won't go into it with the expectation of actually doing well so anything half decent will be an over-achievement and a bonus.
Gerrard for me, we should of been building the team around him not Lampard years ago. Still by far the best English midfielder in the prem bar none as Tuesday night proved. Going forward in the next couple of years not too sure but not a goalkeeper for obvious reasons.
Parker for the Euros then someone much younger, possibly Hart
Can't stand Stevie Me myself-great for Liverpool but not suited by international football
Gives the ball away far too much which you get punished for in the international game as you don't get it back straight away like you do in the highly entertaining but technically p*ss-poor juggernaut that is the Premier League
They should rotate it based on a simple weekly points system:
2 - Sleep with a hooker 1 - Cheat on wife 3 - Sleep with another players wife 2 - Snapped by paps doing something immoral 4 - Snapped by paps doing something illegal 1 - Recently abused a ref 5 - Have a legal case against you in the pipeline 3 - For a known super-injunction 3 - Under-perform at club level 2 - Miss drugs test

Parker was a stopgap/compromise choice. I'd go for Terry, BUT as he won't get the job the only alternative is Gerrard, who, as a skipper seems to be a bit too introverted on the field. Longer term? ... Wayne Rooney .. when he is a tad more mature and is not banned

It's a very English thing that the goalkeeper can't be the captain.
