gloom merchants only need apply

  • Here is a gloom merchant

  • You'd have a face like that if you saw that his overnight bag contained gaffer tape and cable ties.
  • I get the feeling there's a very small minority of fans with a serious amount of egg on their faces*. Their sagacity over the folly of Powell's appointment, and subsequent predictions of doom and gloom at the back end of last season have been made to look very, very silly. Some of them no doubt would love to say i told you so, when and if Powell eventually comes unstuck....

    * i dont include Razil in this buch, he's a good chap if a little daft at times
Last season (and the one before that, and the one before that) when lots of fans believed we would win the league did this group pop up and say I told you so when we ended up worse than the year before?
No, the very nature of pessimism means you expect to miserable and are therefore unsurprised when reality lives down to your expectation, you don't love it - you are, after all, miserable. You're just not surprised that you're miserable.

I prefer to think of myself as a realist. We haven't been promoted for quite some time now, so its all gonna be a bit different. Realistically I believe we won't struggle to stay up, but I am a bit nervous about the season ahead, or perhaps excited is a better word.

On the CP point there were many who didn't see Powell as the new messiah including myself, just because he was Charlton but actually were very concerned that he had no managerial experience, and rightly so in my view.

These weren't doom and gloom merchants but people who said what they saw based on the facts presented in front of them; and also in my view very happy to be proved wrong. So I don't agree that there is any egg on face here, I think there is a bit too much running down other people's point of view on here to be honest. By all means argue the toss, but at the same time a bit of respect for others wouldn't go a miss.

The new owners, manager and players have all contributed to what looks like a very sucessful season, and CP must take the lions share of the credit for that. I still think its early in his career and he's learning but its all looking good so far.

  • ...once the promotion horn goes a bit floppy...
That's as good a phrase as you'll read in any literature.
  • I don't understand all these who should we sign threads, CP has a built a team here who have lost only 2 games all season (both deflected goals and another with a man sent off) and are runaway leaders. This tells me this team is probably too good for this level and is more than capable of doing well at the next level. Team spirit and the confidence everyone in this team has will hopefully mean we'll surprise a few in the Championship

Wooah there Tiger! I'm not talking about you, but I suspect there is a minority who will be all to keen get on his back if we don't set the Championship alight next season - that's the only gloom i foresee. I have been to many games with you & apart from the odd bit of shouted inept tactical advice I have never seen any negativity from your goodself...
  • yawn g you just can't resist a dig, you are the original WUM
  • We are the best by some way of a poor bunch in League 1 this season and have got lucky in some of our games. Next season will be a whole lot harder. Let's keep our expectations realistic. I have great faith in SCP and his team to know what is needed in the Championship - I'd rather leave it to them and enjoy what is left of this season.
