When we sent palace down

I was only 11ish at the time, so I can't really remember details too much, so to anyone there, what was the atmosphere etc like? Or the fans after? Because you'd think it would be pretty crazy but people don't really go on about it too much...

  • The start of that awful amarillo song
  • It was great, we needed to get a draw and we did, we done the whole 'is this the way to amarillo' tune saying 'we sent the palace down'.
  • I havent basked as much as I did that day until...well now really. I brought my best mate who can be a bit of a knob at times and he supports Newcastle as he is from Jarrow, on the train he was full of "this will be a laugh, Charlton I have coughed up scarier things" etc etc, by kick off he was visibly shaken by the atmosphere insdie and outside the ground, afterwards he said it was the best game he had ever been to and hasnt been back since!

A great day and I look forward to renewing our rivalry next season with them
  • I remember that song literally constantly through the game, but I cant really remember much happening outside...and there's been a few games in the last couple of years that i couldn't hear myself think, and i was wondering was that game really special noise wise? Cos it probably should have been
  • Ah ok, thanks se7

Fantastic day. Don’t think the palarse players and staff expected so much celebration from us. Johnson after he thought he scored the winning goal giving it to our fans. Then their fortunes turned. (corny)

i took a couple of Norwich fans along to that game. They were hoping to beat the drop themselves. They still enjoyed the atmosphere.
  • We left bang on the final whistle and as we turned into Church Lane about 20 of them tried to have a pop at me, a mate, my father-in-law and my wife.

Absolute muppets. Laughed in their faces and they seemed to have second thoughts.

Eventually they started again, before anything could kick off a mounted copper twatted the chief protaganist and the rest legged it and left him to get nicked.

    Brilliant atmosphere in the ground.

Didn't see any Palace in Charlton though that day/night!!
  • That's not like palace! To give it to women and families!

    Joke.
  • One of my top football memories as a Charlton fan, great day, special atmosphere as no matter what happened after with us, they are still struggling to get back there & im confident they still will be failing when we are back in the top division.

  • didn't really care about it at the time & don't really care about it now. As they say " be careful what you wish for "....... as
I remember some also singing " we wont play you again" and that has had a touch of irony which has been lost on a few on here !!

Much prefer singing about OUR achievments and not mocking others...........sometimes it come sto bite you back !!

  • Too right mate. God forbid football should be tribal or fun

I really fail to see how anyone would not enjoy sending down a local rival? Football, sport and life in general is a series of ups and downs. You have to enjoy the ups and make the most of them because for the majority of us the downs tend to outweigh the ups.
It was brilliant and I still like to hear the song, heard it at Chesterfield as the hardcore were doing a kind of Starsound CharltonON45 circa 1981.
As a Palacce mate of mine tried to say "It wasn't you that sent us down, it was because of many poor results throughout the season....." NO!!! I said, it WAS us, if we hadn't have equalized, you'd have stayed up - FACT. We celebrated big time, from the terraces to the Boardroom!
"Be careful what you wish for..." What a load of crap that statement is! I WANT EVERYTHING I WISH FOR THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Enjoy the good times, it's the memories of these that get you through the bad times.
  • Well said. So what if it bites you back.

Exactly - pretty amazing that the ultras went home without a wimper, bless
    'em
  • It's quite right to revel in sending your rivals down. I remember "let's send the Palace down" turning into "we sent the Palace down", and giving Jon Fortune the highlight of his career.

But if you give, you have to be prepared to receive as well. And let's face it, the last 5 seasons before this one have given the Palace fans plenty to laugh at us about...

Yeah and rightly so. If you can't take it, don't give it out. Fortunately I can do both, as proven on here.
  • I enjoyed it I had a very late beer in a bar in Lewisham ;-)
  • Once they let us out Terry N.

Even though we tried scaling the fence at the back.

  • The atmosphere was up there as possibly the best league match at The Valley. I think that only the Ipswich play-off match was close along with our first match back of course.
The Nigels were shocked at the noise coming from every part of The Valley that day and with the strength of feeling we enjoyed that moment. That was one to savour. Who cares about what has happened since as far a bragging is concerned, we sent them down and that moment can never be taken away.
Loved every minute of it. If only every match was like that...but because it isn't it makes these moments all the sweeter.
  • One of the greatest days at football I can remember , loved the stripey spotty pricks giving it large at the station and then melting when fronted,

Like has been said there was no palace in charlton that day , just kids and gobby youth

It was the best result tbh, because if we had just spanked them they wouldn't have had that belief and it was taking the belief away from them that was so good
  • It was a bit of fun. but didn't compare to alot of other nights at the valley where it was about us achieving something like ipswich in the play offs, the 3 all with man u, beating chelsea 4 2. Some cracking games against the hammers waiting Liverpool 3 2 etc. It means a whole lot more when we achieve something.
  • Have to say, I got more enjoyment out of Dennis' stoppage time winner at Selhurst earlier in the season.

Exactly and if sending Palace down is not achieving something then I am a monkey's Uncle.
  • One of the best days of my life lol
  • The wife found me asleep in the porch at 3 am cos I just couldn't open the door that's how good it was
  • I was driving through Lewisham on the way back from that game and stopped alongside a bus. The driver noticed my Charlton shirt and gave me a questioning thumbs down gesture (ie, did we send Palace down?). I nodded and gave him the thumbs down, then a beatific smile crossed his face and he gave me a big thumbs up and drove off happy. Magic.
  • One of the best days of my life. The whole ground singing at the end. North, East & West. "We sent the Palace down".
  • I seem to remember the commentator referring to "Palarse" on the tannoy.
