Many miles have I travelled............

edited March 2012 in General Charlton
Well I'm just about to set a new personal record for the last 54 years of being an Addick! After a 350 mile round trip to Chesterfield, 270 miles under my belt for Bournemouth and back and 400 from Cheshire (visiting family all week) to the Valley and back ahead of me on Tuesday versus Colchester, that'll take me over 1000 miles in 8 days. Now I know there'll be lifers out there saying 'that's chicken feed' but come on lets hear from some of our hardened travellers how many days and the games involved when it took you to clock up a thousand miles following Charlton. All our exiled addicks whether in other parts of this country or abroad should have no problem with their stories but what about those based closer to the Valley?

Not bad at all. Which part of Cheshire did you visit as I am born and bred in the North West.

This week has consisted of two games you mention and the Man United youth game. I live in the Wirral and these trips have totalled about 850 miles in 5 days by car. Due to recent change in personal circumstances, I won't be able to add to my 6 home appearances this season by train but the away games still remain the easier option. This season I have done certain blocks of games for example: Huddersfield to Yeovil games totalled about two and a half thousand miles.

The most I have done in a week in my 24 years of following Charlton was about 1500 miles or it could have been more if I could find out when the reserves played Chelsea reserves in 2001-02 at The Valley.

I would like to know how much that Seb has done in a week!

Why the fascination with Charlton if born and bred in the NW? 1500 miles in a week will take some beating hats off to you. My daughter's postal address is Staffordshire Moorlands but I shall be travelling from Congleton.

You don't want to know as I don't want to risk the sarcastic comments from others but my support for Charlton is genuine and done about 93 grounds in the process.

Have a safe trip to Colchester and that goes to the rest of the lifers as well.

No that's fine work the mileage out though in an 8 day period or less and state the opposition, keep em coming.
  • Hats off to you mate

In the 80/81 season we played away at Plymouth and Carlisle in the space of five days which I guess would be around 1,100 miles for the 50 or so of us who made both trips. Add Newport a few days before and you're up to about 1,400 in eight days.

Not quite Plymouth was 1-1 according to Richard Redden's book, still an unbeaten run though and you guys must have slept for a another 8 days afterwards!

I think we beat Carlisle 2-1 three times that year.
  • There was once an article in Voice of the Valley from a Charlton supporter who hailed from Manchester, and as a youth thought that Charlton Athletic came from Chorlton in Manchester hence why he started supporting them and carried on supporting even after realising his geographical error. Thats not you is it Pork Pie ?

There is a few, I met one geezer at Plymouth in April 2008 and then at Northwich, he goes to virtually every game. I love Charlton as much as the next person but respect to this geezer, I could not come down virtually every week with that distance

3,624 miles would be the distance travelled to every away game this season (measured from SE7)

More than most in this division

  • We were away at Barnsley on the Saturday before away at Brescia in the Anglo-Italian Cup in Oct 93, did both games on the coach which makes this may personal record for miles travelled in a week overland. Think we were also away the weekend before the game at Ancona - may have been Luton.

I did Brescia on the coach, never again.
    Great experience,

Was Luton, a Sunday game on the tele, we lost 1-0
  • Didn't one fan travel to Italy and back on a moped?

    F*** that!
  • Now of a certain age what happened in the 80's and 90's is as clear as anything but can't remember what happened last week. The sequence of results was Barnsley 0 Charlton 1 then Brescia 2 Charlton 0 and Luton 1 Charlton 0 indeed on TV on a Sunday then Ancona 1 Charlton 1 (Leaburn). The coach trip to Italy for Brescia was memorable, but I wouldn't do it again!

Indeed particularly as we went through one of the heaviest downpours in a thunderstorm I have experienced. Done it on a motorbike in the rain that flooded Boscastle but was close to home so not so bad.
  • About 1150 miles (by air) to Tunisa football tournament in 1975 to see us, spanners, Swindon and Bournemouth, return journey few days later

Nice one, did you manage to get a programme from there. If so, would have a copy to sell?
  • No program's at the time but we received a pennant ... Posted a pic long time back
