Semedo superstar not so MASSIVE anymore?

Probably get slated for this but I would drop him after today. He was poor and has been last few games IMO. Doesn't add alot in attacking positions and has been getting in the way of his team mates in defensive positions. Causes a bit of confusion at times.

Next league game I would play Prutton in the 'Semedo role' and Lines.

  • You can imagine that thread going on and around just like it did on CL.
  • Honest pro, but never the answer.
Would have been a good back up if Hollands/Stevens/Pritchard/Hughes had been injured.
Water carrier. Find a thread where I said otherwise.
  • Plenty voted him in as player of 2010-2011 though...

Player of the year is always about effort and not result. Semedo never lacks effort but what has he ever won ? Love the guy but he's not going to win anybody anything.
  • Goes missing in the winter months

    He had the loudest song.
  • gave 100% but not a very good player imo. never gave the team anything going forward and always passed sideways. slowed our game down all the time. i would have a one legged hollands any day over him.

i voted him for pots but thats becaused he was an ok player out of a very poor bunch
  • Best of a very bad bunch from last season. Nothing to write home about to Portugal winning that award.
  • Oh no. Not again.
  • Its a amazing all season Semedo has been SWFC star player he has a few dodgy games and now they are turning on him?

I think its an exaggeration to say its ALWAYS about effort, but regardless - last season's competition was effectively "least bad player of the year", as stated above not much for him to boast about. Liked him but he was very limited.

He looked like he cared and that was good enough for me; the rest had nothing

Arrant balls, or are you joking?
  • Never understand the negativity towards Jose.

For me he was our only player of the past few seasons who I could see playing at a higher level (especially vs Spurs in the Cup where I thought he didn't look out of place) Always put in the effort and did his job, he obviously will never be a goal scoring midfielder or playmaker but that was never his job. I remember when CP asked him to get forward a bit more at the end of last season and he nearly scored a few. Don't think he is to blame for our wingers/strikers/centre backs etc being inconsistent and mostly crap during his time here
  • Yep, slate and abuse Mooney/Benson even when they put in a shift, and TRIED. Meanwhile sing SEMEDO's song en masse even when he's playing utter utter shite. Millwall away springs to mind (the most humiliated I've felt as a Charlton fan).

And we wonder why people leave and then slate the fans...

Look at the team now for god sake. Semedo is in the same category as detritus like Racon, Halford, Hasselbaink, Bent (M), Butterfield, McCormack, Bouazza, Cook, that waster right-back from pompey and all the other pond-life we've had tarnish our name over the last few years.

Thank f**k for the squad we have now... onwards and upwards...

Cos we would never do a thing like that...

    And the competition was...

An honest hard working player who would look ok in a better side than SW and the Charlton team of the last few years, but L1/CCC is his level.

To give balance to the thread, admittedly the thread starter said this but the vast majority of replies are positive about Him, seems they appreciate his effort and commitment as much as we did.

  • Football fans are always very forgiving of any player that obviously and always give 100% for the shirt and can even forgive that players deficiencies and lack of ability. Jose had ability but was a limited footballer but he did always give that 100%. At a time when we had a team predominantly made up of wastrels and individuals conspicuous for not caring I think Semedo shone out and that's why he was a favourite son. I bear him no ill will and wish him well as long as it doesn't conflict with our success.
  • I mentioned on a thread a couple of seasons ago that I thought he was over-hyped and a liability and was duly shot down in flames.

Regarding him winning player of the year last season, He only got that due to jackson getting crocked. JJ would have strolled away with that award if he hadn't have been injured.
  • He was our player of the season and therefore deserves our respect. We should not use his performance for another team as a reason to denegrate him.

    Totally agree.

Contrast that with this season. There's still a good half-a-dozen players still in with a decent shout of winning it. My guess is that whoever manages to pip the others to the post will be able to walk on water. Happy days :-)
  • He received player of the season as he tried very hard and cared, unlike most.

He is a decent defensive mid, but only in a 4-5-1. He's far too limited to play alongside anyone in a 4-4-2.

exactly, we have morons that have wanted bwp dropped for the last 10 games... I know which one is worse
  • Semedo was the best of a bad bunch over 3 or 4 seasons so earned his Player of the year.

He gave his best so will always receive a round of applause from me.

    We have better now though.
  • I don't like to hear Semedo being slagged off, just because he plays for the Massive. He was quality for us, when few others could give a toss, or were able to keep up. Maybe he would have been better still for us, if he was playing in the current squad. Not all players had the natural ability to be stars, but giving their all was their assett, think Gary Nelson etc.

Please don't pull down a former idol, just because of where he now plays. He's not exactly playing for Millwall or Palace. Player's don't get to be player of the year by accident. (Then again, Adolf Hitler, was Time Magazine, Man of the Year 1938, so sometimes people can be short sighted.)
  • I think they do need to drop him, but that's because they're not getting anywhere near enough goals and they need to start attacking games more, particularly with the Blades now capable of opening a gap up. He's very defensive and they need to get forward. That is all I will say on the Semedo matter as anything else would be repeating old business
