  • Somewhere between a fiver and £10,000,000.
  • Would depend on the size of your garden I suppose.
  • The figure given many years ago was, IIRC, £750k.

No idea what it would be now.
  • Even that struggles after -5 i believe

    And ball

  • Costs a fortune to run as well.

Why dont we go with Acworths suggestion? Get a grant from the FA. Build a roof on the ground. Simple.
  • i would imagine the running costs are more of a concern than buying it.
  • Premiership yes but for a club running at considerable loss it's not an option or a priority.
  • A roof would be a better long term solution if our winters are to become harsher, but of course many people would then complain about artificial conditions etc. Also, I would guess the figure for building a roof would be much higher than undersoil heating

  • I'm guessing it costs less to run than is lost in revenue from sponsorship, paying a number of staff twice and reduced crowds. Should certainly be mandatory at Prem level, but I suspect there's a business case for it at lower levels too.
  • You could spend the money and install it and then the game is cancelled because the surrounding roads are iced up and dangerous.

The CEO said that the Southampton postponement last season cost the club £60,000. That was a boxing day game when a big crowd and lots of hospitality would have been expected. So maybe the top of the range.

So using the limited figures we have £300k for undersoil heating = 5 cancelled games @ £60k each.

Or if the figure is £750k then it's 12.5 postponed games.

To build a roof you'd first need to build the East and Jimmy South Stands so that's £15m before you then consider the roof. Maybe not the first option for a League 1 club.
  • I wasn't being entirely serious.

Neither are an option for a league one club.

Possibly look at the cover Carlisle have bought.

    I know you weren't. I suspect that Ackworth was : - )

The Carlisle option sounds good. It's like a big cardigan for the pitch so I like it : - )

Any ideas on what it costs?

That's not including the running costs for undersoil heating of course...

Also...i'm swear a few years ago on football manager our ground had it? not the most reliable of sources obviously, but usually pretty good. Have we ever had it...?

  • True, there would be running costs too.

Pretty sure we've never had undersoil heating.
  • I'm sure the club have confirmed we have never had it, but we have had the heated dome thing instead. Football Manager probably put it in that we had it when we were in the Premiership
  • We used to have an inflatable bubble. I think now, it's just a plastic sheet.

    This.

I think other factors came in as well.

I think that the police were happy enough for a postponement because of the Millwall vs WHU game.

  • My dad leant the club the money for some pitch covers when the club were skint and first moved back to the valley - don't think that was much more than a glorified tarpaulin - it's probably what we use now. I'm sure our new owners will address the situation even if frost isn't generally a problem where they are from.
  • There is a case study online lookng at the financial justification of a geo fleece cover (what Carlisle have). The argument says that saving one Saturday match (19-34k) revenue for Carlisle, paid for the cover.

We usually have games called off because of problems at the South end of the ground. Surely it is worth the investment? Even if you only initially shell out for a big enough cover to sort the South end out?

I wouldn't worry about the cost of paying the staff twice. They don't.

We could have installed it for £250k in the PL days, according to the man responsible.
  • Make the pitch artificiial

No police input yesterday. They aren't worried about CAFC v Rochdale. However it's true it's not just about the pitch in some situations.
  • As has been seen at Derby today, pitch fine, the roads round Pride Park, not good and game pulled.
