Some years back a friend of mine told his girlfriend he was taking her out for a slap up meal. She spent ages getting ready. He turned up at her house, and they then drove off for the meal....... he took her to the old caravan that used to be parked on the A2 nr Dartford Heath. They did the best bacon sandwiches but I don't think it was what she had in mind.
The missus is going to moan at you until you pop your clogs, whether you go to the football or not. You might as well ignore her and go to the footie. If you are married, not much is likely to happen in the evening anyhow.
Load of old shit. Invented by the yanks to sell cards, chocolate and roses at huge markup every year, media complicit in guilt-tripping people into participating. Never have done it, never will.
Aliwibble she does go to some games with but only when it's warm!Did say come with me but it's to cold! The annoying thing is she didn't buy me anything last year but that's okay!!!

there's your get-out..say you haven't forgotten last year and although you didn't say anything at the time, you were deeply hurt by the fact she didn't get you anything and that by being with her this Valentine's will bring back too many painful memories & you need time by yourself on the 14th to reflect on your relationship.
She comes to the Valley with me so not a problem and I'll buy her a romatic meal in MacDonalds or she can have a Wimpy at the ground if we are running a bit late.

Nah, that approach could bite him on the arse if he forgets in future years. He could just say "I offered to take you out on Valentine's Day, but you turned me down", which is true and doesn't go overboard o the guilt trip.
