The Battle of Roots Hall

edited February 2012 in General Charlton
Bit of a debate going on over on Twitter about the famous battle of Roots Hall, the match refereed by Kelvin Morton. This was all started by Garry Nelson, he thinks it's Gatting, I said Walshie and another has said Gritty. did Curbs get sent from the dug out?

Who did get sent off?

There was also at least one sending off when we played the Shrimpers on Boxing Day, who got sent off that day?

Thanks.

Gatting got sent off i think
  • was that the game with 14 penalties
  • Curbs got sent to the stand after protesting about Gatting being sent off.
  • we missed two pens as well
  • Gatting sent off for us, Prior for them, Pitcher and Walsh missed penalties
  • did that end up a 1-1 draw?
  • Thanks, who got sent off in the Boxing Day match?
  • walsh and chapple
  • I went to the game but can't remember the score?
  • Thought this was going to be about the latest saga in their seemingly never ending boardroom shenanigans:

  • There was a time when if one fancied watching an entertaining football match of a weekend all one had to do was see which one Kelvin Morton was reffing.

This is the man that once got a spectator thrown out of his seat because his shirt clashed with the linesmans flag.
  • we lost 4-2 on Boxing Day in the 93/94 season
  • Gatting sent off with that idiot Morton raising his snotty White hanky at him, before he then pulled out the red card.
  • I was at this one and travelling home after went over the QE Bridge before it was officially open

I'm sure the game was shown on TV (might have been big match) coz I picked myself out whilst watching it!
  • Cracking away support that day 3000 when we were getting 5/6000 at Upton Park

Didn't Brownie get sent off at the end as well? Remember Curbs getting sent off
  • Pretty sure Andy Ansah was playing for Southend that day. Along with a certain Chris Powell.
  • Towering Leaburn header for the equaliser, Rob(ert) Lee dribbled about 70 yards near the end and the keeper saved the shot, would have been some goal. Mass sendings off, Morton made his name at a P*****/Brighton game where he gave a sackful of penalties, one of which was scored by one A.Curbishley funnily enough.
  • When Curbs got sent off it was none other than Alex Dyer (in his cafc playing days) who dragged him down the tunnel to prevent him getting himself into further trouble...

  • Andy Ansah confirmed that he dived over Steve Gatting to win the penalty.
  • The self same Kelvin Morton that invoked the back pass rule at Sainsburys a couple of years later when the ball spooned off Darren Pitcher's knee - got a few of the crowd a tad riled I recall. Farcical sending off for Gatting, however Leaburn's goal the following season was one of his finest hours - took the ball round the keeper (Simon Royce) twice before putting the ball away once two men had made it to the goal-line.
  • I was there for that one, I think Gatting got sent off down our end and the TV highlights caught me going mental at the ref whilst I was hanging onto the metal fencing like some deranged monkey!
  • You get 3.4 difficulty for diving over Gatting.
  • Game was delayed wasn't it to get us all in? And it kicked off before the match too, if I'm not mistaken.
  • We had a couple of great games with Southend back in the nineties, this thread brings back a lot of memories. Didn't Sweaty Balmer have a go at our fans during one of them too?

The hankie falling out with the red card is up there with the best comedy early-90s Charlton moments. (the horse in Bob Bolder's goal at Bristol Rovers the funniest of course)
  • Went to both of these games. The boxing game was freezing and was a shocker
  • I was at that game... now i remember... bn to a few of those games
  • battle of roots hall should have said battle of spread eagle and forresters, spread eagle before the game forresters after.
