Green v Waggy

Is it time Waggy got his place back? Green is looking lazy when we haven't got the ball, gives away silly fouls which lead to bookings (like last night). I just think time on the sidelines might do him some good, also Waggy and Solly work brilliantly down the right.

  • oh god. not this again.
  • Green was like a lot of others and was below par last night , i'd play Green on Saturday , but have Waggy ( if fit) on the bench.
  • I think Green needs to be dropped to the bench for a while, but not sure if I would prefer Haynes or Waggy there.
  • Can't believe Waggy doesn't even make the bench. Yesterday was the perfect example where we were obviously running out of ideas and Waggy can make a big difference. Think Green is pretty poor.
  • Possibly? Although Green is still a better player IMO and can bring more to the team. He had a better game last night than suggested on here. He does put a shift in and can challenge, but even so naturally he is not that sort of player so it depends on what you are looking for.
  • Green's crossing is the only thing keeping him in the team in my opinion, and even that let him down last night. If only Waggy could cross like Green we'd have a fantastic player on our hands.
  • Do we really need to make knee-jerk reactions every time a few of our players have an off game? Green was poor last night, but if you drop players as soon as they have a bad game you won't have enough to choose from the following week.
  • This is where we need 7 subs instead of 5
  • Dabos this isn't based on one game, I think Green has been pretty poor most of the season. I'm grateful he's popped up with a few winners (even the one against Exeter) but his overall play looks lazy, and I'd like to see more from him considering he was our big signing. If Waggy could cross then he'd be a fantastic player, but don't forget he pops up with a few goals himself.
  • green is a footballer wagstaff is an athlete ...

we are a football club i did notice last night that green was visibly affected by the boo boys (why the hell do they do it? ) if we want our club to succeeed we ve got to have less of the negative from the support

so for me green is my choice every time but for gods sake lets get behind the boys rather than moan

  • They are different players but Waggy had a spell where he wasn't affecting the game enough. Green can produce that moment of quality but is a little inconsistent. I'd have Green ahead of Waggy at the moment tbh.
  • Green put in a couple of quality crosses last night but no one in the middle was busting a gut to get onto them, and I don't think he is nearly as lazy as some make out. Agreed Waggy will run all day but he hasn't got the dead ball or crossing ability that Green has.
  • Both of them seem to have the same problem, they play well when they've got something to prove but appear lazy (Green was acting like it was a training match at times last night) and complacent when they feel their place in the side is assured. I think whoever starts, we need to have the other on the bench as a reminder that the guy with the jersey needs to be at the top of his game all the time.
  • All this if only waggy could cross like green etc etc well he can't so end of argument in my eyes
  • Another issue with Green is that he gets booked so easily and after he's been booked you won't see him anywhere near a tackle for the rest of the game. Obviously he doesn't want to get sent off but if he stopped the silly bookings we'd get more out of him.

This, if the forwards were keeping up with the pace of both the game and Green when he crosses it would all be a different outcome. On several occassions last night Green put in sublime crosses only to find Kermit & Clark were 5 yards too late.

Clark I can understand because he is jank but no excuse from Kermit due to his god like status.

  • Would like to see Waggy on the bench at least. As said months ago there's not much between the two and that's still the case.

It's not as simple as just playing the best crosser. How many goals have we actually scored from Green's crosses in open play?

Green obviously the better crosser but Wagstaff scores just as many, is quicker, fitter, stronger defensively and links up with Solly better.

Stephens is back now and Jackson also takes set pieces, so it's not like we need Green to give us a decent set piece taker.

We're also yet to see a good performance from Green Stephens Hollands Jackson as a midfield 4. Possibly better balanced with some pace and energy somewhere, which Wagstaff or Pritchard both offer. Maybe with BWP or Haynes starting we'll be ok though.
  • I think there should be a place for both of them, but Green was really poor yesterday. If Waggy had played that game the anti-Waggy brigade would have been demanding a witch burning.
  • Think there could be a case for Haynes starting wide right on Saturday with Green on the bench.
No place for Wagstaff in what should be an attack minded line up against the mighty 'Dale'.
  • Not on one game no, but many more performances like that and Waggy will be rubbing his hands. Green is a good player but sometimes I feel he thinks he is better than he really is. Keep it a bit more simple, save the tricks for when you need them, not just because you can.

  • The thing is Haynes does not like playing wide-right, and Powell stated that he bought him as a striker.I would put Waggy and Hayes back on the bench permenantly as they can alter game plans.
  • Last night Green was crossing to no-one, all because he rarely seemed to look up before putting the ball across. A quick glance up could tell him that no-one was in the box so there is no point in putting it in.

  • Harry Gregory said:

Harry, I was thinking Haynes, Kermo, and BWP in a 4-3-3.
Midfield of Hollands playing deep, Stephens and Jackson further forward.

  • Think Haynes played wide in a 4-3-3 and doesn't like playing there. Powell said himself he sees Haynes as a striker.

Don't think we'll see Powell experiment with 4-3-3 again with the players we have at the moment.

Wagstaff with his fitness is probably more suited to it than most since he'll be able to support the main striker and get back to make it a 5 man midfield. BWP struggled out wide in a 4-3-3 last season (Exeter at home?).
  • Green should keep his place in the team as i dont think he has any competition. Waggy is a far better forward than winger as he rarley takes on players and he isnt a great crosser whereas he is quick and can finish
  • waggy played up front a couple of times this season in cup games and was utter junk and missed a couple of easy chances

he should be warming up tho cos green is not producing his best and may need a kick up the backside soon

When you are playing a weaker side at home who will get bodies behind the ball and not offer much offensively you can and probably should play BWP and Haynes with Kermogant in a free role behind them. If you look at who you drop, well JJ has to be high up the list for me in these sort of games. He is a crucial player for us and has genuine class, but these teams concede possession in the areas which mean his talents are needed less, especially as we have a left back with great energy levels who can fulfill the role of attacker and defender.

I feel I have to explain myself as I think JJ is a genuine contender for player of the year and I am not being critical of him at all, but sometimes you have a case for horses for courses. I'd always have him in against better more adventurous sides and for away games, but we don't need to have that extra pass in the middle against the weaker sides, we need to counter the fact they are trying to crowd out our strikers. Yesterday they suceeded although we did create 7 or 8 chances that on another day would have got more than a solitary goal. If we had set up as I am suggesting I think we would have had more chances and does anybody think Rochadle will approach Saturday's game any differently?

The solution isn't to bring Waggy in, it is to get more options for Green.
  • It's a team game and for most games the team's been playing brilliantly, on occasions certain players are under par, but as a team they work their socks off to cover for each other.

Powell knows his best team (which includes Green over Wagstaff and Hamer over Sullivan), he watches them everday in training and he has driven them to be the best team in League 1 (10 points clear of second), therefore, please leave all team decisions to him!!

Let's just enjoy where we are - it's been a while...!
