'Hamer is our no.1 for a good while. Until a bigger club gets him.' A bigger club? Can I borrow your glasses for the next game - they obviously show you a much better keeper than they show me. Every goes on about his clean sheet, but it our brilliant defence that takes the credit for most of that.
Tell me about a couple of match-changing saves he has made?
Brentford away for one. He made good saves the other day. It is as if people focus on the negatives. He's kept clean sheets against Sheffield Wednesday (once), United (twice) and Huddersfield. Give the man some credit. I am not defending his fllapping as it is a 'weak' area of his but he's a league 1 goalkeeper. Even they're not perfect.
"Tell me about a couple of match-changing saves he has made?" I personally think that shot-stopping is his strong point.
At 0 0 in the Wednesday match when they were using there brute force to try and score he pulled off a fantasic save, if that had gone in they would of probably put 10 men behind the ball and we could be looking at Wednesday just behind us in the league.
Let's face it even Deano wasn't that great coming off his line and his kicking was atrocious. HOWEVER his shot-stopping was of a level that other keepers could only dream about. Hamer is young and with Ben giving him extra training, he will improve.
Its the way he comes out to catch a ball. He has his arms at full stretch and not trying to bring it into his body.Any slight nudge with his arms out stretched means he is odds on to spill it. If we have a goal keeping coach surely he must see this fault
im critical of keepers but hes decent - he just needs a little lot more concentration cos those two drops on saturday were bread and butter after he got himself in good catching positions
There is not a single keeper in the league who does not have a weakness or two, most I suspect may be suspect on crosses. For example at the top Simonsen has made a clanger or two, Weaver (we know well),, Bennett (doesn't pass the CL height test and would imagine he is not always the most dominant presence) and Martin (MK also prone to an error). Hamer has on the whole been very good this season, yes he has had his moments but is he a weakness? No, he just had a couple of flaps in the first half and did not really recover.
I was a fan of Elliot and don't see much between him and Hamer, both are good League 1 keepers with the potential to play at a higher level. Elliot made a mistake or two, but won us points, Hamer has done pretty much the same.
Hamer's kicking is his biggest strength. He's at the level you'd expect for a Championship/L1 player but his distribution is something else. Unfortunately it wasn't much cop against the Blades but I feel comfortable knowing he can get us a goal with a well placed kick to Kerms or BWP
I cannot believe people on here criticising Hamer!! We have a young keeper with bags of potential that could lead him to be a top Championship keeper and yet people still moan and say he is being carried by our defense! rubbish!! Im more confident with Hamer in goal than I ever was with Rob Elliot...maybe if he was a Charlton fan and grew up watching games in the Covered end people would giving him more of a chance. Lets get behind him, he will only get better!! COYR
I think CP and the back room team took a lot of effort in finding and securing Hamer and did a lot of research on the lad. If CP and Ben Roberts think he can grow with us just like some of the other gems we have signed then I am very happy to trust in CP once again.
I thought Rob Elliot was a more than decent league one keeper but enough people criticised him on here. You watch MOTD (Premiership keepers) and you are going to see errors every week, it happens. Hamer has some weaker areas and lots of qualities. His record is excellent - yes he has a great defence in front of him but he plays his part.
I would say he is a keeper who is already at a decent level and also improving. As we hopefully progress up the leagues, just the sort of keeper we should have. I'm more than happy with the whole squad.
Rob Elliot rarely had the opportunity to play behind a decent back four or midfield. I wonder what we'd be making of him had he stayed? Or what we would be saying about Hamer if he was playing for us at any time over the last few seasons?
I think BFR hits the nail on the head. Hamer has the benefit of being our keeper in a fantastic team at a fantastic time. Robbie never really had that chance and he certainly did not get many breaks from fans for being 'one of us'. I don't believe that Hamer has no good points but I do think he will struggle if we go up. Some would say he is lucky to be in today's team as they help him keep those clean sheets. Some would say he is unlucky as he certianly would not stand out as being poor in teams of seasons gone by.
Third Division goalkeeper is not World Class shock
So in his entire game, Hamer has a weakness - occasional "flapping" at a cross?
And therefore many people focus on that part of his game only, instead of appreciating all the other attributes he brings consistently to the table.
As someone pointed out above, the sheer number of games he has kept a clean sheet is testament to his overall ability. Yes, we have a very sound defence - and Hamer is an integral part of that.
He suffers from being a GK which means his errors always look much worse then others in the team, good young keeper who im sure will grow with the team.
The back 5 is a unit and if it wasnt for Hamer the defenders might not have such impressive stats, they help each other.
COMMUNICATION is a big factor to our defence. Hamer's communication to his back 4 is spot on, just watch him during a game. Past goalkeepers of ours biggest problem was communication.
Hamer did have a poor game on Staurday but I can think of games where Cech had a bad game. look at Man Utds keepers and Arsenal's, why should we expect to have the perfect keeper when the top clubs in the land don't. Hamer is a very good keeper whose record with us speaks for itself.
Agreed Oggy He's had my vote since he took over from Robbie and has undoubtedly played an important part in the team conceding only 19 goals in 26 matches this season. He was certainly a main contributor to the draw at Mk Dons with some crucial saves before we equalised and the win at Brentford. The alternative from the present squad is Sullivan who offers nothing better IMO. I marked him down on Saturday for the flaps he made but in his defence the conditions were difficult with the wind swirling around. A bad day at the office for him we all have them; heres to another clean sheet against the Greecians on Saturday. COYR
Some are saying we should worry about our end of season collapse - the reason it will occur is because we are Charlton. others look at the comparitive quality of the side compared to the rest of the league and see that promtion is going to happen. I didn't expect Chrissy to be saying that, still work to be done but better the fans are positive than anticipating a blip. That often puts more pressure on the players!
He had a bad time on Saturday but I like that he comes out for a lot of crosses and our defenders know what to expect. His aim is to catch the ball but if he can't he punches or tips it away and if he manages this I'm happy. I can't remember him missing any completely. Eventually one of these that he tips away will fall on an oponents head and we might get caught out but I'm convinced that this method and how he performs it will save us more goals that it will cost us.
The only thing I would say could be a weakness is over confidence, nothing is won in January, No-one is promoted in January, SCP is right to take each game as it comes and fans need to as well. I see a lot of posts about who we should buy next season and who is good enough for the championship etc. Yes we have had a fantastic start to the season and yes everything is looking good on and off the pitch and as a fan ecspecially after the last few years I have hope and excitement not just for this season but for the future but lets take a step back take each game as it comes and quietly go about our business of picking up points. Bare in mind other teams are going to look at Charlton as a massive scalp in this division and we have to treat every game like a cup final go about our business in a diginified way make sure we don't become arrogant the closer we get to promotion because until we are mathmatically up anything is possible just look at newcastle who threw away a 12 point lead starting in January few years back. Like i say im optimistic and excited but staying grounded, well until we are mathmatically up anyway, then and if that happens i'm going nuts
As the guy that started this thread, have to agree with most contributions. His record speaks for itself! Top of league, least goals conceded, numerous clean sheets. All in all, for one so young, could become one of our great keepers.
If he is supposed to have dropped so many clangers every week, how come the stats are good, it is nonsense to say when its a clean sheet it is totally down to the outfield defenders only. He is part of the defence.
Think some people have forgotten he is a young keeper who is still learning his trade. This will be his first full season, give the bloke a chance.
Hamer has had a bad game and has had some dodgy moments here and there he has also done pretty well in some games. The interesting thing will be the next few games as other teams will have seen what Sheff U did and will try the same. Either Hamer will step up to the mark and we will see saturday was an aberration or we have a problem. We are in a strong enough a position to be able to deal with it either way.
Our defence is so good this season that the goalkeeper has little to do for a lot of the game. Hamer at previous clubs was busy throughout the game. Therefore his concentration levels need to be worked on and then we have a great keeper! 3 consecutive clean sheets show how good he already is though

He's played in 21 league games, conceded 15 goals and kept 9 clean sheets. My god, why the hell does Powell persist with him? ;-)
*not including Orient game as it was only about 8 mins, although technically, that's another clean sheet. :-0

He'll be desperate to do well.
