why should they preferentially pick irish /scottish/english /welsh to make the numbers right , surely they should pick the best available , even if it is an all english or welsh or scottish or northern irish team
you wouldn't expect them to pick some chuffy northern irish sprinters in front of a better english sprinter if there were already a few english sprinters already in the team IYKWIM
I agree but as I said above the noises that are being made indicate the team will have a "balance" to it rather than based on ability, don't forget most, if not all of the other sports have had, or are in the process of having qualifing events to sort out the strong from the weak for selection.
As far as I am aware this is not the case for the football team?
It might be me but I just don't understand all this "wonderful super star" David Beckham stuff that been going round. Personally I dont think he is that good. To me he's an Ok player that married a pop singer that could not sing. Apart from scoring one free kick against the Greeks, what did he ever achieve for England. Having watched LA Galaxy on ESPN a couple of times recently all he seems to do is run around and complain to the Refs all night
Didn't the Welsh FA say they wanted nothing to do with it.
As regards Richard's lack of commitment to England, I remember Giggs missing more than his fair share of Wales games in Wrexham on a Wednesday due to random midweek injuries.

Just my opinion
What has he ever achieved? More caps for England than any other outfield player in history. He's also won major honors in England, Spain, America and I think Italy too.
I can't think of an English player in my lifetime that has been as illustrious personally.

It's not just you.
He shouldn't even have been under consideration as an OAP, he's virtually retired now.
Beckham is the kind of guy you take simply to give him a swansong, is he the bestbritish player? No. Is he a global icon coming to the end of an illustrious career? Yes. Play him and let him retire

This. To me he is the only person who has come out and actively said he really wants to play, so I say let him. Let him run the 100m final if he wants to.
i can see both sides of the argument, his form isnt great and im not sure he has the legs to keep up with under 23's but on the other hand he would put bums on seats and it would be great seeing him lead out the GB team. I personally would have selected him as my captain
The whole Pearce thing is a bit weird his whole demeanour is one of rebellion , and annoyance , I think the beckham choice is right for there are better players in that position
But the press are out for him it seems and the fa are contradicting him
Quite a poor squad IMO, several players with little or no top flight experience, maybe it just highlights the dearth of talent coming through. Honestly can't see why some of the "full squad" couldn't have been included: like the Ox and Caroll. Shame about Scotland's attitude to the tournament.
Can't believe that Bellamy and Giggs are considered amongst the best over 23s in Britain. What's the point of going into something half assed when Brazil, Uruguay and Spain are taking it seriously. Could have been a great thing.

The team will be picked on merit, it's the main reason Beckham hasn't been picked

Becks should be playing.

Do the women have to be mainly under 23?
