Lack of interest / excitement compared to last week ?

edited January 2012 in General Charlton
Anyone got any view on why that could be ?

Clearly not respected in ticket sales, but last week this forum and elsewhere was awash with talk ahead of the game. This week it seems slightly mooted, which is strange because it could be the season defining fixture.

Any thoughts ?

  • we havnt had a few blades on here bigging it up and stiring. to there credit the blade who came on here earlier in the week was calm and rational.. for some reason we got obbsessd with wednesday, and sheff utd just keep winning and closing the gap they in my mind our the biggest threat to us not wednesday or huddersfield.
  • Because even if we lose, I still think we're still confident of going up.
If we'd lost last week & then this, we'd all being having doubts.
Much more relaxed about this one (at the moment).
  • Having read bits and pieces about last weeks game, its obvious that last week was our cup final. We were allowed to share the same pitch as Sheffield Wednesday and after that anything else would be an anti-climax.
  • It's the lack of desire to shut the opposition fans up I think. Much as we complain about the deluded Wendies fans they do add an extra spice to events. I'm hoping we win this one of course but my God did I want to shut those Wendies fans up. The fact Blades fans seem to be normal human beings and aren't stirring the pot so we're more focused on the actual game rather than the rivalry. Add to that the fact Wendies have Semedo, Llera and to a lesser extent Weaver and we have Morro and Clarke and last week's match was always going to be electric.
  • I think United will be a tougher test than last week. Still proper excited.
  • Agree with all of the above. It doesn't feel like a grudge match, unlike last week.
  • Although it is probably madness to think it and nobody would dare say it, i think sub consciously, last week's result is the sort of result that tells you we are looking at a team of Champions here and that has eased a lot of tension. If we'd lost that one then the pressure for this one would have been cranked up but as it is i think everybody is looking forward to Saturday with the expectation of a bit of a carnival type day knowing that a defeat, whilst being a blow, would not necessarily be a disaster.
  • Im up from the Isle of Wight for the game, hope it improves on my last valley visit against Tranmere. I think this game is very important to win, because it will give us a very healthy cushion and take pressure off, perhaps then get back to some early season free flowing football and goals. As said by CE, bit more relaxed as a great win last week and now beaten Wednesday and Hudds and United so more confident in our pedigree.

As per earlier posts, 2 weeks ago i didn't care especially which of Sheff W/Utd/Udders went up along with us. I've very much changed that opinion, and will be willing everyone to beat the Wendies from now on.
  • For me we are now enetring the most important 24 days of the season with 6 league games in this period.
Also take a look at the games the other contenders face in this period, by valentines day we will know if MK are challengers. Cant wait for Saturday myself. Onwards and upwards.

  • Full repspect for Sheff U but as CP would say, this is just another/the next game.
  • I'm really excited about Saturday's match. The Blades have been on a good run to get themselves where they are now and it will be a tough test, particularly as they will want to make amends for the result at their place earlier in the season.

The fact that we picked up 3 points in the MASSIVE game last week though does take some of the pressure off in my mind though. If we'd lost last week it would have been completely different.
  • I'm personally as excited/nervous about this one as I was last Saturday.

My thoughts are that only a percentage of Lifers make away games , whilst most attend at The Valley . Not going to a match means wanting to get involved in another way ie by posting thoughts on here . And for those travelling, it's like going away on holiday...the anticipation, the journey and finally the arrival, followed by 90+minutes of gut wrenching "pleasure" and the euphoria of the final whistle signalling another 3 points. You just can't beat it !

On the other hand, we badly want to preserve our excellent home record tomorrow as well as increase the gap at the top. So, nerves probably outweigh the excitement ...and that means more time likely spent in the loo when thinking about it and less time posting !

    Keep the faith !!
  • agree with BD, I think last week we knew if we lost there would be massive pressure on the United game and if we lost both games, we'd be right back in the mix with our momentum gone. That risk has gone now, 3 points from the two games is fine, we'll still be clear at the top, so the pressure has eased.
  • If we win this game we will be 7 points clear with a game in hand on 2nd place at the least. Which is a massive lead at this point of the season and one which will psychologically hurt those others with championship aspirations and can only reinforce our own position mentally.

Lose and we are only a point better off from Sheff Utd albeit with the game in hand and back in the mix.

For those reasons I am as nervy as I was this time last week. And I do see The Blades giving us probably the sternest test yet at The Valley this season. Which all adds up to a lot of excitement for me.

It has been subdued here, not sure why come 3pm Saturday I'm sure I'll be nervous, hopefully this hasn't filtered through to the players and they go into the game in a relaxed fashion thinking the league is won

A win would make things alot easier for ourselves in the long run

Also think part of the reason is because Sheff Utd have just gone about their business quietly this season, no real stars like Rhodes who has attracted alot of attention, Hudders had the 46 game unbeaten run and Wednesday have their fans bigging themselves up while the Blades have just got on with things. Will be our toughest game of the season.

Fully expecting Sat to be a great atmosphere and to be the toughest game so far. You are right in that the build up has been much more relaxed. Why? Dunno, but the fact that we haven't had SU fans banging on all season about how lucky we are/good they are/rubbish BWP is/massive they are probably added an extra element.

In a strange way if we go up and the Massive dont, i will miss them. To have a team and supporters who are so, well, Massive in their deluded and arrogant views of their beloved club has been quite entertaining. And if they go up a level i'm sure it will only make their beliefs even stronger.
As BigRedEvil said, the small neighbours in comparison to the wednesday have been quietly gathering points and now find themselfs up there with us. Its going to be a big game but last week i, with so many others, just so wanted to burst the wendies little fantasy of them having the right to piss all over this league.
  • Saturdays game is massive
  • reckon a big away game is a bit more exciting than a home game in some ways when everyone has their usual routine etc

  • i guess we could help spice this up a bit.

A Sheffield united fans group headed by Sir Sean Bean have been seen burning the Charlton flag, (so thats where it went). This comes after Danny Wilson the blades manager accusing charlton fans of being a bunch of "racist homphobic thugs."
The reason for Danny Wilsons outburst is still unclear. Some have suggested that it might have something to do with Charlton supporters being heard singing last week in the steel city, "sheffield is a shit hole, i want to go home".
James Beattie, forward and legend of the red and white wizards had only this to say, "i love it if we beat them".
  • In a strange way if we go up and the Massive dont, i will miss them. To have a team and supporters who are so, well, Massive in their deluded and arrogant views of their beloved club has been quite entertaining. And if they go up a level i'm sure it will only make their beliefs even stronger.

This whole Wendys thing reminds me of the stuff we endured from Man City when we were both going for it in the championship 10 years ago. I predict we will both go up and then beat them 4-1 at Hillsborough next christmas, the fourth goal coming off the recently come-out-of-retirement Claus Jensens' knee.

Out of interest, who was in goal for Citeh all those years ago?
  • lets do the talking on the pitch for this one, calmly go about our business and collecting 3 more points and putting the pressure back on the chasing pack
  • Mooted or muted?

This sat should see more football being played. Can't imagine their going to be as bad as the wendies in terms off hoof ball.

As for their fans. I think only 1 sheff u fan has came on here and he sounded pretty decent unlike them wearing the tesco bags
  • another massive game - we will enjoy the win even more than last week as it will mean 6 points from 2 hard games.
  • Weaver? (Answer to Big William)
  • weaver was so bad
  • Wednesday giving it the large made us really want it as fans ... Utd havnt been like that ... but this is a vital game ... absolutely vital ..
  • I'm still exhausted from the Sheff Wed match. Haven't got the energy to concentrate on Sheffield Utd.
