He's still a helluva lot wealthier than me I would seriously hazard a guess. Love the bloke but would struggle to justify to my missus that im splashing out to help the finances of an ex premiership footballer so we'll have to skip the weekly shop.
  • Unreal. How long was he paid Premier League wages?
  • Strange one.
  • Didn't want to say it but he wasn't afraid to chuck it down his neck in London's nightspots when we were all tucked up in bed in order to get up and do a proper job in the morning - for a fraction of the money. Didn't exactly show any loyalty when we were falling apart under Pardew either did he? For those reasons (and the fact i'm not really into these sycophantic affairs), i'm out.
  • What's happened to all the money he made from flogging t-shirts ?

If he had never left the club, then maybe you could make a case for some sort of celebratory dinner, but I'm really not sure this is warranted. Have we ever done something similar for, say, Mark Kinsella, John Robinson or Andy Hunt ?

I wouldn't do it for John Robinson. He'd just sit there with a long face all night.
  • I cant really afford the trainfare to Exeter can someone do a sponsored swim?
  • Fortune's got some neck ain't he?
  • To be fair to him reading about it on the OS it will be ex teammates etc funding it not as I first thought an appeal to fans.

Must be pretty humbling to have to go cap in hand like that though. Imagine his agent who "suggested" the idea will be getting a tidy little cut of the proceeds.
  • His agent is Sky Andrew.

  • Good luck to him. Spent his whole career without a big move and was probably well down the earnings compared to collegues. Has suffered two major injuries, that effectively brought his career to an end in his 20s.

Never going to get a testimonial, this is his last chance to get a few quid in.
  • I blame the bloke for our downfall, if he never scored that goal to send the Palace down we may never had got Dowie. Saying that it was fun sending them down, worth the 5 years of hurt?

I'll put a smiley face on here just in case anyone thinks i'm being serious :) there

What he said. Just don't get the nasty comments.
  • Could get a benefit match no? Like Simon Webster's against West Ham at the Valley.
  • Good luck to him. If friends and fans want to buy tickets they have a choice.
  • I'd like to see him get a benefit match. I think it sends the right message out to current and prospective players about what sort of club we are.
  • His goal did send the Palace down that season! In my eyes I don't think he did anything wrong against CAFC. I hope the dinner goes some way to helping him out. Perhaps he can invest it back by getting some coaching qualifications.
  • Don't have anything against the bloke and on reflection, that goal was absolutely classic but i'm still out. Each to their own.
  • Plaayers going he loves a bit of grub

But light years ahead of the majority who paid to watch him.

Even if he was on bargain premier league wages he must have been on around 5k a week. 116 appearances = 116 appearance fees as well.

Forgive me if I have little sympathy towards this plea.

  • I'm with Bexley Dan and Clem. He was probably paid more than most fans to do a job. If he's now hard up then its down to him not planning for the future.

I also get fed up with hearing this 'its a short career' stuff. Does that stop footballers finding a new career? Its happened to many people over the last few years since these financial problems started but no one arranges a benefit for these people.
  • I have never really understood the testimonial / benefit thing. Back in the day some players stayed around their clubs for whole careers and I suppose you could argue that those long serving players who maybe plied their trade in the lower leagues on not great money did deserve something in the way of fans showing their appreciation. In more recent times even division two players haul in money that a lot of supporters can only dream of albeit for shortish careers by normal job standards. I doubt JF is in any more need financially than the vast majority of Charlton fans.
  • It's a bit like public sector workers and their end of service pension isn't it.

Id go that palace day was the second greatest moment of supporting CAFC i had, and i remember looking at the faces all around me and listening to the song all afternoon, and i tell you know there wernt one person in that ground bar the stripey scum that was not reveling in that moment

Its different to any other walk of life, because of the joy that this club and its players bring to you, and the pain and shite times , when we all need to pull together,

Forts served us well, dont agree dont go but dont be so nasty in your comments IMO
  • I heard from a reasonable source that he signed a contract on £9k a week when he was out of contract in the Premier League and then when it finished, when we needed him, and he'd missed most of the season through injury he refused to sign another contract and went elsewhere.

He signed for Sheffield United on short term contracts and when they refused to sign him permanently he came back to us. he was on out books for a season and made little impact.

I'm not offering any kind of opinion, but £9k a week for three years is in excess of £700k after tax and NI.

    Miserable small minded bunch.

So for a few years the bloke was paid wages you could only dream about; me too.
But it was only a handful of years.

The dinner will appeal to some. No one's forcing you to even think about going.
    But why gripe about it?
  • yeah im only 22 but i would hope to earn more than jon fortune did in say 20 years, he probably didnt earn that much (although the figures in my head are pure guesswork)

maybe he couldve saved better but hes a footballer to be fair.....hang on is this actually a jon fortune is skint and needs a bit of cash benefit dinner?
  • Am I missing something here, is he now on disability benefit?
