Favourite Ever CAFC Free Kick (and takers)

  • For me, that Talal vs Arsenal.

Jensen was always special though, and Murphy against Spurs when we beat them 2-0 at home (with JT scoring another wondergoal) was also class.

Really refreshing this year to see some good free kicks again - I reckon it's a sign of the skill levels and confidence we have in the team again. Green always whips in a mean cross (e.g. against huddersfield) and Yann's goal against Yeovil was excellent.
I was listening to the Mills free kick on Clubcall! 0898 12 11 46
Haha, I remember the days. Must have last listened to that when i was under 8 as it was in my old house...

  • I can't remember supporting a team with so many possible FK takers - Kerms, Jacko, Green. I'm sure Stephens stepped up once or twice at the beginning of the season.
  • Has to be Talal v Arsenal. Bothroyd used to score some special ones too as did Paul Mortimer.
Morts? I can't remember him scoring from a free kick! I could be totally wrong though!

Mike Kenning could hit a free kick......he scored 2 or 3 crackers - and with a ball that weighed more than an ounce
  • Pretty sure the the Kinsella one was against West Brom, & we stuffed them 5-0...

    That's what I thought
  • Mark Robson is a midweek cup replay away at Newcastle
  • Yea I was going to mention Robson. My favourite player back in the early days at the 'new' Valley.
Think he scored two free kicks in one game against Norwich (I think??)
  • I Remember a great Keith Peacock free kick, it must have been near the end of a match as I remember watching it from high up on the terrace, and my dad would always start the trek up before the final whistle.

Great goal, that was the game where O'Connell lamped Whyte at half time.....because of a free kick!

  • did Andy Reid ever score one? I remember he was supposed to take the one El Kak scored agaisnt Blackburn. I went mental when that went in, wrong footed Friedel. I thoght for a second we would stay up.
  • el kak v arsenal....didnt they show it about 10 times on the trot at half time? absolute pummel!
  • Simon Webster away at Swindon. Absolute rocket.

El Kak - Blackburn. Won me £300.

This, plus one against Brentford in the dying seconds of a cup tie at the Valley in about 96-97ish. Anyone remember it? Whyte?

Edit - just noticed it's mentioned in the original post. Sorry - dunce.

I mentioned that above. He got one and Kins got one.
  • Whyte`s free kick against Brentford was quality as was Robson`s at Newcastle but think the Webster rocket at Swindon was superb. Also Jensen against West Ham and didn`t he get another cracker at Arsenal once when we lost 2.1 and Johansson hit the post with an overhead in the last minute?
  • El Kak v Blackburn, the crowd went mental and the belief we could stay up was there....... how wrong we was!
  • Simon Webster
  • Does anyone remember a free kick in the 98 promotion season, think it may have been west brom home when the ball was laid off to kins win blasted it home, think we scored four that day
I remember this one well because it was a really cleverly worked routine rather than a dead ball blaster. It was definitely against West Brom. Must dig out my old end of season DVD (or was it video still in those days?).

  • Also I like Danny Green's corners. I reckon he will score from one this season!
I'd wish he stopped trying to do this - the chances are pretty slim especially given that other sides are probably aware of it - and it just reduces other opportunities, particularly when Yann is so good in the air and we have 2 CBs that are good at corners.

  • Back to Colin Walsh. Anyone remember one at Anfield when we pointed out to Grobelaar where Walshie was going to put it - then watched it sail past him anyway. Think that made it 2-1 to us. Sadly they shuffled the pack, Hansen scored, and they eventually won 3-2 but we didn't know that when the ball went in.

I'm sure it was about 2 years before we went down?

  • The winning goal in the 3rd play off game against Leeds at St Andrews
  • sorry killer kish, but that wasn't direct from a free kick and therefore technically doesn't count !!

As for an earlier post about Andy Reid............jeez, he scored a few in his (short) time with us. I can't remember the games but there was a couple in front of the Covered End and at least one away from home (Bristol ?)

No, sadly, it was under Les Reed...
  • El K from 45 yards against Brum.
  • Atmosphere wise it has to be El Karkouri V Blackburn. I was only 16/17 at the time, and I really thought we were gonna stay up after that. I've never before or since seen the Valley rock like that, nearly knocked my own grandad down about 4 rows!
