Favourite Ever CAFC Free Kick (and takers)

edited January 2012 in General Charlton
As Johnnie Jackson lined up his free kick I started to think about which Addick, past or present, I'd ideally want taking it. Obviously Jackson was the perfect player - but anyway, which Addick would you have picked, and which CAFC free kick is you favourite of all time?

For me, it's David Whyte's against Brentford (I think!) & Colin Walsh.

  • Jensen against West Spam
  • El Kak from the halfway line (against Birmingham?)

    :-)
  • El karkouri against Blackburn
  • Does anyone remember a free kick in the 98 promotion season, think it may have been west brom home when the ball was laid off to kins win blasted it home, think we scored four that day
  • Wasn't that in the 4-4 against Norwich?
  • El Karkouri against Arsenal for me
  • Peakie rocket away at Ipswich eons ago
  • Danny Mills against Villa
  • Danny Mills and El Karkouri's.

  • Danny Mills in to make it 4-3 at Villa Park in 1999. It took 2 deflections on its way in and we were parked right behind the goal.

Then there was the 2-1 goal at St. Andrews against Leeds in the play-off. OK it took 4 touches in all to get the ball in the net but what a moment!

simon websters one at swindon also eons ago
  • El Karkouri. Free kick against Blackburn and Arsenal. (and the cheeky goal from the half way line against Birmingham).
Also I like Danny Green's corners. I reckon he will score from one this season!
  • Colin Walsh vs Man City at Selhurst in a 5-0 win

I remember seeing Colin Powell score from a corner in a gale at Plymouth in early 1981?

Wasn't that against Man City at home when we won 4-0. Weaver was in goal and got pelters

  • Claus Jensen against West Ham. A brilliant 35 yarder that curled past a David James who was diving full length. A stupendous strike in a brilliant performance on an unforgetable night at the Valley.

The world really did seem at our fingertips that night as Scott Parker and Claus Jensen ruled the midfield, their talents complimenting each others exquisitely.

I remember that and it was one that sprang to mind for me, although Danny Murphys heavily deflected effort at Villa in 98/99 is my favourite, just because of the significance of the goal at the time and how it capped possibly the most extrordinary game I've ever seen Charlton (or anyone) involved in.

In my time,we've never really had an out and out set-piece specialist. Claus Jensen was probably the most reliable I can remember, but even he didn't score that many. Maybe not free kicks specifically, but in my time watching Charlton I would say Kins is the player I'd have most wanted to see lining up a long range effort. He seemed to score at least 2 or 3 belters a season.

  • El karkouri vs Blackburn. The ground went mental when that went in.
  • Will always remember Karkouri's from the halfway line (against brum?)

And although it never went in I'll always remember a freekick we took in the prem... 2 players standing either side of the ball, one laid it to the other who then chipped it up, the 2 peeled off and DiCanio ran through the middle and smacked it on the volley, narrowly went over... Pure class, only Paulo would have the audacity to even try it

  • one of my faves is Nicky Baileys free kick against Barnet in the JPT. If the goal wasn't there they would have been fishing the ball out of the Thames!
  • That El Kak one against Blackburn wasn't that outstanding as a free kick though. Whytes against Brentford was class.

I enjoyed the two we got in the 4-4 against Norwich. Think one was on one side of the goal, Kinsella did a little dummy and Mark Robson curled it round the wall with his left, then the other was the reverse.

Anyone know what Claus is upto these days? Used to love watching him and Parker in midfield.

  • Mills, easily. I know it didn't matter ultimately but after such an up and down game and thinking it could keep us up, I've got really good memories of it.
  • Colin Walsh, Full Members Cup at Selhurst 1988, last minute equaliser against the mighty Bradford City, or was it Hull City?

Left foot sent from the Gods themselves.

I was going to say that one, wasn't it Norwich in the Full Members?
  • Without reading this I was going to say El Karkouri - I see I'm not alone! Claus is another good shout though.
  • I was listening to the Mills free kick on Clubcall! 0898 12 11 46.. I wonder if it still works... Konchesky took a couple of good ones, but Walsh with his cultured left foot was probably the best I've known. Was Morts any good from set plays? I would imagine he was but don't recall him scoring any!
  • Has to be Talal v Arsenal. Bothroyd used to score some special ones too as did Paul Mortimer.
  • If we can include free kick set-pieces then Shirtliff's equaliser against Leeds in the 87 play off final is my favourite.
