  • Ideally Waggy would go out on loan but we need the cover.
  • Hope we keep Waggy.

He has a lot to offer and has the right attitude to improve and grow with the club.
  • waggy still feels too raw to me when he plays , great energy and enthusiasm but he had a couple of chances when he played up top in the cup games and i just knew he wouldn't score , he's not a natural
there will be natural wastage as we (hopefully) become more successful and i can see waggy being part of that
stick him in the lovely bloke and all that category but not for me if we're to progress into a top half of the championship side unless he improves a lot , which can of course happen
  • how old is waggy? I'm sure he's still not that old and can improve
  • how old is waggy? I'm sure he's still not that old and can improve
    22 in March
  • Waggy's problem as a winger is he rarely delivers a cross, effective or otherwise. On the other hand he has an excellent eye for goal. henry joined Arsenal as a winger and converted to a forward who rarely heads the ball but has blistering pace. It would not surprise me in the least if as he bulks up a bit he converts to playing up front as a poor mans Henry
  • i like waggy, but this season and the tail end of last season he has spent to much time appealing for fouls staying down he feels hes been fouled and shouting at the refs instead of keeping his head down playing to the whistle and getting on with the game.

Horses for courses. Green might have a neater touch but Waggy scores more, has a better engine (the best at the club) and covers back better. Think he deserves more support than some on this thread suggest.

I agree with this totally, should definitely be on the bench.

I hate writing this .. BUT .. Waggy is CAFC to the core. He loves the club and generally the fans love him for his commitment and occasional touches of brilliance. However he has been overtaken by events, his skillset does not fit in with the current team structure and Powell's signings and team selections indicate that Wagstaff is no longer regarded as a regular first team squad member. I expect to see him here for the rest of this season and probably to move on in the summer dependant on any offer that may or may not be made to him. He will make a nice career for himself, but not, I fear, at the Valley

But I fear this is the truth, he doesn't appear to be SCPs favourite :/
  • I love Waggy for his effort and energy but Green is better
  • i too think Waggy's time at CAFC is coming to an end. I even think now that Pritchard is ahead of him for the Right Midfield berth.

  • The problem with Wagstaffe is that he doesn't have some of the basic tools of the winger's trade. He has good, though not exceptional, pace and he works hard but he doesn't seem to have a 'trick" nor is his crossing good enough. Too many times his crosses hit the first man or overshoot. Green can be inconsistent but he can whip great crosses in and beat a defender in an enclosed space. His corners and long throws are useful weapons too. I would go for Green every time as a starter. Wagstaffe is still valuable to us as a squad member and, as others as pointed out, as an impact sub.
  • Wagstaff, much like Sheffield United, will come good.
  • At one point I thought Waggy was going to break on through and Solly struggle to. How things have changed since the start of the previous season. However, if Solly can change so much then I expect Waggy to see this and up his game too. I feel we will see more of Waggy in a CAFC shirt, but only if he cuts out all the theatrics and knuckles down a bit more. Until he leaves us he will have my support as well.
  • Agree that Green is starting to look the better player (a few weeks ago I would have said there wasn't much in it) but I still think Solly and Wagstaff play better together than Solly and Green - although again there isn't much in that either.
  • I love Waggy. I've even named my mates baby after him....

    He chose something sillier!
  • Waggy is good but at the moment Green is better. It may change it may not but that's Football.
  • Scotty's great, love his application and work rate, but Green offers more. Green is more composed and delivers the kind of quality that we have so missed in recent seasons.
He is a different type of player, Scotty will recognise that-he will continue to be an important member of the squad.

in the 10 league games waggy has started we have conceded 8 goals
in the 15 league games green has started we have conceded 11goals

  • Which proves that oohaah has got to much time on his hands.
  • Wagstaff is a great player and is good at getting crosses in when near to the box . He can also score goals around the box but isn't on the pitch as much because Green is more accurate from distance and therefore does not have to get all the way up the pitch to cross the ball. Therefore Green is always going to get more crosses in than wagstaff and therefore create more chances than wagstaff. Scott needs to put on more muscle so that he can keep the ball more; he can be too easily bundled off it. Having said that he at times last season was the single player who gave absolutely everything for the cause and was/is a fan's favourite.

If you took the ratios and made it so that Waggy had played 15 games then if it had carried on in that pattern we would've conceded 12 goals so im not sure whether you were trying to prove waggy or green to be better? Or just trying to deliver some statistics into the debate?
  • I really hope Waggy stays, learns and improves in the key areas that he needs because he has the energy and basic talent to be a very good player at a higher level and he is one of our own.

I would be very unhappy if he left and ended up, like many lesser players have, scoring against us for someone else, but I fear that may happen someday. I think Lincs has got this about right unfortunately.

Not all promising youth products deliver but I think Scott will do well and he seems to have a good attitude. As Curbs would say, "we'll see".
  • i'm adding some some statistics to the often used cliche of "we're more solid defensively when waggy plays"
  • I agree Bryan, he has the basics, but as others have said he needs to get a 'trick' or two and mix up his game and hit the line and cross. I know hitting the line and crossing is old fashioned now - but is still effective. If you can do this great. More importantly in todays game is to 'bend it like Beckham' and cross around the defender, but few seem to be able to do this consistantly.

If he could add a trick or two and one of the cross methods he will be a good winger. Add both and he will be a very very good winger.

Having said this, I have said ever since he came on the scene that to me he is a forward in the making. I think he will end up in this position eventually, hopefully with us. I think he is a natural at taking up great positions in the box and is a good finisher - top two requirements of a striker!
  • Hopefully Chrissy has Waggy as work-in-progress. Otherwise, I would be disappointed!
  • I think it comes down to the shape of the team as much as anything else.

Jackson is our captain and is a left sided midfielder rather than a winger, as long as that's the case then we need to play a conventional winger on the right. For all Wagstaff's good attributes his crossing isn't great and we need one of our wide men to have the ability to reguarly put in crosses. It's harsh on Scott but I think it's the right decision at the moment.
  • If you sit through Match of the Day and the Football League show I think you'd be surprised how few goals come from conventional crosses (a la Green). Effective wing play is getting round the back of defenders and producing cut backs, or low drives into the box (something that Waggy does). Analysing our current squad with a view to Championship football, Green, Taylor and surprisingly Jackson are the three that I think will struggle to step up in class, while Waggy's pace and workrate will carry him to higher levels.
