Scott Wagstaff

I feel sorry for scotty, he hasn't had a look in since green came in, and I think he is better by a mile. Got pace and skill. I think if he doesn't get a look in for the rest of the season, he'll be gone in the summer, which is a shame as he is an academy product!

  • I think Green has a bit more about him - Wagstaff's levels fell off a bit and he has had the odd chance but not really grasped it - essential cover and a very good player and prospect. I do think he will end up more central.
  • No sentiment in football

Supaclive claimed he was leaving in january and we were getting two monster signings
  • Shoots well, fast and reasonable ball control. Poor crosses if he doesn't fall over.Too much appealing for a foul. Think the refs have got this now. Green is better.
  • I like Waggy but he is not good enought to get in the team at present. It is now up to him to train hard and force his way in the team and stay there like Pritchard has done.

    Sorry I meant this!!
  • Green needs competition and with Wagstaff we get two very different players.

Not skilful, but he is quicker, fitter and harder working than Green (which would probably be why Pritchard moved to RM yesterday without Wagstaff on the bench) Both get goals and assists.

Green much more likely to pick out a pass or cross, which is even more important with Stephens missing.

Still don't think there's much between them, both probably need to improve decision making, reading of the game etc to step up to the Championship.

If he goes will be interesting to see who we replace him with.
  • Wagstaff hasnt helped himself this year. When he is on the pitch he expends most of his energy moaning at referees. Green brings more to the table.

Having said that, dont understand two central midfielders on the bench and would replace either Russell or Stephens with Wagstaff.
  • Wagstaff is a bit of a Rommedahl, lots of pace but no end product (although adds loads more defensively than Rom ever did).

If Waggy could get his end product right he could be awesome. I am sure that he works on it in training but its something that is not reflected on the pitch.

Green on the other hand has a great cross but lacks pace over anything but a very short distance. That said unless waggy sorts his crosssing its Greens ability we need, although Owlstalk have a thread for Green all of his own.

Really? What are they on about? - I can't be assed to go there and put up with all that nonsense

Either you're a complete wind up or you need to go to specsavers!!!!!

Basically how rubbish he is and glad they did not buy him.

Have we had our 2 'Monster Signings' already then, or are Godzilla & Godzuki signing on Monday?

  • think he maybe has a boot and blades/studs problem. No point in his speed if he falls over when he gets near the opposition.
  • Waggy always frustrates me, as a starter he'll either score or be anonymous for the whole game. Still think his best position is being a impact sub but now Haynes is here he's going to have to work even harder.
  • I think Waggy is a great player to have on the bench as he is versatile, quick and always could get a goal - as for starting I don't think he is close to Green - Green offers more - although he isn't as quick, his quality of delivery is so valuable, I think he is similar to Jackson in that respect. Green also offers quality from set pieces and throw-ins which Waggy doesn't. He signed a new deal so not going anywhere unless we get money and I think he is worth a place on the bench!
  • Not quite sure that the number of goals he scores equates to 'no end product'.

It would be great to keep him as a squad player because we know what he offers and he is still young. I have a feeling he might move to play more games. . .maybe a one month loan would be useful.

League game stats from FL site for our first choice right winger:

    11/12 Green 2 goals 6 assists (8 so far)
    10/11 Wagstaff 8 goals 6 assists (14 in total)
    09/10 Sam 4 goals 10 assists (14 in total)

Not much between them when it comes down to actual goals and assists. Green's clearly playing in the best team, Sam had no goalscorers up front while Wagstaff played in the worst team. All have a pretty decent (but not always reliable) end product at this level.

I like Waggy and those stats paint Waggy in a pretty favourable light but I think the key stat is he's the lowest assister of the lot.

Sam and Green may be a bit more enigmatic, but they were/are players that you feel can make thing happen. Waggy never really opens teams up with a moment of skill or vision, he tends to finsih off moves others have started and I think it's important to have that spark of individual brilliance in your team.

Yesterdays free-kick aside, Jacko is largely a solid player albeit one who chips in with a weighty share of goals. Likewise Hollands and probably Pritchard too. Russell and Hughes are both solid but without the goal return. Without Stephens, Green is the only one who you feel may produce that killer pass/cross that creates the chance to win a tight game and I think that is why he gets the nod ahead of Waggy right now. It's all about balancing the side.
  • League 1 player at best - won't be in the squad when we are in the CCC.

Shame they don't make it 7 subs in that league - cannot see any benefit of limiting teams to 5

I hate writing this .. BUT .. Waggy is CAFC to the core. He loves the club and generally the fans love him for his commitment and occasional touches of brilliance. However he has been overtaken by events, his skillset does not fit in with the current team structure and Powell's signings and team selections indicate that Wagstaff is no longer regarded as a regular first team squad member. I expect to see him here for the rest of this season and probably to move on in the summer dependant on any offer that may or may not be made to him. He will make a nice career for himself, but not, I fear, at the Valley

I'm afraid that sums up my views of Waggy, Crusty.

Promises so much but alas, has failed to deliver when given the chance this season.

  • Green is the best crosser at the club and is more skilful than Waggy. On the other hand Waggy works much harder without the ball and tracks back and supports the backs, whereas Green doesn't and this has caused us problems at times.
In a game where we're playing good football and are relatively comfotable I favour Green. In a game where we need to work hard and defend I prefer Waggy.

Agree, not that type of player, much more John Robinson than Sam/Thomas etc.

It'll be interesting to see how we do if Stephens and Green both start. The two games they did we drew and lost (to Stevenage). I'm sure they need games but both probably benefit from energy alongside them (e.g. Wagstaff/Hughes/Pritchard).

Wouldn't write off Wagstaff eventually stepping up to the Championship but he needs regular football. Doubt he'll get it here. Will be through him improving with experience rather than becoming a creative player, which he obviously is not.

if waggy isn't off this jan then i think he's been quite harshly treated. I'm not convinced by Green although accept he does have qualities but Waggy is more likely to get to the by line and cut it back. Since Kermo has been in the team, how often have we got to the by line and cut it back. I reckon Kermo could do some real damage if we did that. Away from home, and assuming Stephens comes back in to the middle, i can see Pritchard being utilised on the right quite a bit in place of Green depending on the circumstances. He's more solid, has a better engine and his pace is a real threat. They all have their attributes and with Haynes, Stephens and Clarke to add in i think we will start thumping teams again shortly. We've weathered a tricky spell and won ugly when necessary. One more job to do this saturday then we start playing again i reckon.

Not just me that isn't convinced by Green then. Obviously a good player at this level, but not sure he'll be as comfortable in the Championship (if we get there of course...) as some suggest. Although like Waggy still young and developing.
  • Horses for courses. Green might have a neater touch but Waggy scores more, has a better engine (the best at the club) and covers back better. Think he deserves more support than some on this thread suggest.
