  • ipswich home and away in the play-off semi.
tottenham away in the f.a cup.(mid eighties 1-1)
west ham away (grey kit won 3-1)
one that hasn't been mentioned old trafford in the cup when we took 10,000.
the 1st game back in se7
    sending palace down
beating the spanners (when garland got sent off)
  • I remember really wanting to go to the Ipswich playoff match, but my dad told me it was over 18s only. That's the sign of a real supporter, bringing a mate to the game instead of your son because your mate will get behind the team more! He got me a program though.

As for the actual final itself, I was on a German exchange trip so missed that as well. I did however get to go to Swindon away that year when there was a rain storm on the uncovered away end. I'm not bitter though, I hope the "30k Charlton fans" had a good day.

Having had a few days to digest this, I would say the best home performance was when we beat Preston in 1975 to gain promotion to the old second division and the best away performance was against Ipswich in the FA Cup in 1981. The whole of the away end was packed out at 1.30 with non-stop singing all game.

    That was electric
agree , it was real passion all around the ground superb

My vote goes to this one too - I remember being incredibly nervous before the match, then as soon as I got to my seat the atmosphere started to build, along with a real sense of belief. After Newton scoring, there was no doubt in my mind we would win. Oh for a repeat performance this Saturday (and the next one and the next one and the next one).
  • can't believe no ones mention old trafford in the cup when at half time we sang "things can only get better"

Ipswich play off semi final - that night was the Valley at it's best - the most intimidating i can remember.

Amazing evening- Hot and sticky- remember seeing an interview on the box with Richard Murray taken minutes after the end of the match that, if any was needed, totally showed that he was foremost a fan.

Being dim now after a manic weekend- wasn't that the match straight after the roof was taken off the original west stand?
  • agree with others, the first away leg at Ipswich was absolutely electric, whilst the Middlesborough game was the first time we have taken big numbers anyway AND made a good noise.
  • first time we have taken big numbers! apart from the 10,000 at old trafford or ipswich and wolves in the cup you mean?

not what i said Al, i said taken big numbers AND made a good noise. Bristol there was no noise, and for 10k the at Old Trafford, the atmosphere was dire barring a half time sing a long to a pop song.
  • if we're talking noise then how about the last game at the old Den when for once we actually took a few there and had the whole end. that was loud. (car park afterwards was fun as well!)

  • My old man always used to say Wolves in the cup was the best numbers wise.

Before my time but didnt we take 12000 there when we were only getting 8k home crowds?

Man Utd wasnt a great atmosphere although if you're talking about most balloons taken away from home that one would win it.
  • Man U away in the FA Cup, Bristol City away FA Cup, Blackburn away and Peterboro away....to name a few. Love going away from home especially back in the day when you could stand.....

The ultimate for me would be the QPR away games we used to have, we always took loads and made some good noise.
  • Millwall 5th december 1995 2-0. Grant got a couple i think and it snowed aswell. Bowyer got sent off, and Millwall slid from top to relegation soon after. Priceless!!!!
  • Also Derby County away 1991, Nelse and Leaburn chipping Shilton, 2-1. Also Derby away 1992 with the 'Johnny Major shut yer pits down' classic!! At home Chelsea a few years back 4-2.

if i had to pick one, this is it...i was in the east stand that night, got inside the ground as it kicked off, walked through the entry gangway and, with a combination of a warm balmy night and the occasion, was hit full on with the atmosphere...unbelievably electric, walking into it, it just wrapped around you and covered you up...you could have cut it with a knife...
  • Has to be Palace away in our championship winning season.... Non stop singing from start to finish, including drowning out the fat bird at half time...
  • Tottenham away in the cup 82ish. Even the spuds at work said that our support was unbelievable in terms of numbers and noise.
