We always like to think of ourselves as a "family" club yet in reality we have just as many racist scum amongst our fans as the next club
Sorry but I disagree strongly what that view. Yes we've seen a recent rise in the amount of brain dead morons voicing their filth about Lisbie or whatever BUT I'd still have no qualms at all about suggesting that The Valley is a suitable and safe place for a black or asian fan to watch their football. There are on the other hand many, many, other clubs (some not that far away!) that I would not be confident saying the same thing at all.

    see why do this

why post that on a thread about ending things early because now the fire is lit

& so then you're guilty of the same prejudice & stereotypical views as you accuse others of.

  • My point was that there are certain topics that can never be discussed on here due to some peoples extreme opinions

But hey ho - let's just bury our heads in the sand and pretend that in the stands we are all a credit to our club
  • everyone needs to chill out and just concentrate on what this is.....a football forum with the occasional would ya

going at each other via the internet is about as sad as it gets.

top of the league and all that...........

But we dont pretend that, everyone's always on here moaning about our fans at games.

  • the only people that dislike charlton fans are other charlton fans
  • they like us when when were in our box Gary harming nobody, bit different if we were winning things, patronising like
  • I just wish we had more posters like NLA !

@legaladdick made an excellent point in the opening post,

One of the great values of this site has been the open discussion from opposite sides of an argument but posters must realise that if this site is to retain its validity as one which permits healthy debate, they cannot simply write whatsoever they please. If that happens the administrators close the thread and if we aren't careful we will end up with bland threads and support will disappear.

We generally close or sink threads for two reasons, 1. because it could lead us to libel trouble and if you think that is unrealistic then next time we will send you the solicitor letters for you to respond to, and 2. and the main reason, is because we simply seek where possible to avoid things that creates divisions within our 'community'.

The great thing about the collective nature of following a football club is the diversive nature of how a support is made up. The person sitting next to you could lead the most opposite of lives possible to you, yet for 90 minutes you are united in wanting you team to win. That same diversity is repeated in the people that make up this community.

We never wanted to create just a football forum, which to me is sterile. This was all about opening it up, bringing people together where possible, helping each other out and sharing experiences / problems. It is fantastic when people share some of the highs and lows aspects of their lives, imo.

There has to be a line though, an understanding that the 4000 - 5000 reading your contributions, aren't all your mates, don't find the same jokes funny, and don't hold the same viewpoints as you on controversial issues. That is when you really want your posters to use a bit of common. Would i turn round to a complete stranger at the bar and say what i'm about to post ? Would i be best just keeping this view to myself, or sharing this joke just with my mates on Facebook or in the pub who are like-minded and know what i'm about ?

If you run a forum, you desperately need members who mentally sign up to what you want to achieve, and what boundaries you put in place. The vast, vast majority do, and we're incredibly grateful. There has to be a reluctant acceptance that there will be one or two people who's views, posting style etc. you really can't stand. But you should never let that detract from the fact that there are probably hundreds whose views you do enjoy. And just because there is some form of control and direction in place does not mean that it will be bland and sterile. On the contrary, in the opening few years before stronger personailites fully exerted themselves on the forum and open dislike for other posters emerged, this was one of the wittiest forums i ever come across.

Why do we take it so seriously ? Why don't we just let it 'run itself' and see out a natural flow ? Quite simply, because in those instances, the forum very quickly sinks to that of the lowest denominator, and results in just being left with people calling each other 'c***' all the time. I've seen it first hand elsewhere. We've put a lot of time, energy and money into setting up and continuing to run this platform for six years now, our names and reputations are against it, so it is natural that the standpoint we take in terms of moderation is what either we personal feel most comfortable with, or for what we feels is for the benefit in trying to run a large community smoothly.

It's never going to be perfect, and due to the number of users, is never going to be tailored perfectly for you as an individual. But the benefits for me still vastly outweigh the occassional negatives, so please do what you can to help that continue.

And as always, if that is all too wishy washy or controlled for you, yuo can simply vote with your feet and not post here anymore.

You said "many many clubs" and also said "some" which would suggest more than 1 wouldn't it.

I think you meant Chelsea as the other club anyway.

  • I've always tried to openly dislike him people in a witty way.
  • I am all up for disagreeing and arguing over certain subjects but that are never going to end well
  • People should be more like me

I am fair and even handed.

  • My view ?

Thought the thread on the bnp on Question time was one of the best threads ever on here: People explaining their Right/Left/Middle ground views and discussing them without name calling. How a website should be. Also, when I asked for advice about moving to Ringwood, the response bought tears to my eyes (Sorry, I'm still here). The Stephen Lawrence trial unfortunately  brings the "nastiness" (for wont of a better word) out of people on all sides. Which is why I didn't post on that thread. For what its worth, I'm pleased that the Lawrence family may finally have some peace for theimselves & their son.
  • As much as i enjoy CL since i joined, i do find it a bit dull and humourless compared with my other forum which often has threads ended for slanging matches, abuse, threats, foul language etc.
