  • Finishing Lines.
  • Peter Shaw still watches us, have seen him at The Valley loads of times.

Thats nice to Know, i wonder how many of our former players watch us play
Quite a few. Bolder, Johnny H, Brian Kinsey to name three regulars. I'm sure there are many more. Curbs always seems to be a regular in the directors box
  • Harry Gregory watches us.

Would love to see Harry ,my first memory as a kid was him jumping in the crowd when he scored

And I'm sure Harry would love to meet you @cashncarry and @iaitch...I met him at a hospitality event last season and he was delighted that one of the other guests recognised him - think it is all too rare! He is a lovely chap.

  • Might Have to try and sort that out tnx
  • Loved Harry Gregory, was always winding up the opposition goalkeepers.
  • Apparently he's in the lounge at the top of the west stand with Theo Foley and Brian Kinsey.
  • A fella I've worked with tells he was next door neighbour to a young P.Shaw in Wrottersley Rd that is next to Barnfield Gardens
  • I also remember Harry Gregory as a crowd pleaser from the first games that I attended at the Valley.

I have an old Charles Buchan football monthly magazine from April 67 and I think that it is Harry on the cover. Daft as it seems I can’t find anywhere within the magazine that names the cover players. I’ve even checked on the web for a site that specialises in old copies and it lists it as an unknown action shot.

Anyone help? Sorry the photo is not great.

I'd go further than that Len and say that is definitely Harry and a guess that the opponents were Cardiff at the Valley.
  • Thanks Len and RedChaser - I always suspected it was him, but there's not even a badge on the shirt.

I was friends with our old right back Paul Curtis, we were at Eaglesfield School together and played in the same school and district teams, Paul lived in Wrottesley Rd, Paul's dad had a greengrocers shop at The Slade.

That strip without a badge nails the season to 1966-67, and yes, the opponents at The Valley are Cardiff City. September 24th 1966, won 5-0 - Kenning 2 (1 pen), Saunders, Campbell, Glover. Att. 10,182. I woz there. http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Charlton_Athletic/Charlton_Athletic.htm

@Raith_C_Chattonell‌ We didn't have a badge on the kit that season check here; http://www.historicalkits.co.uk/Charlton_Athletic/Charlton_Athletic.htm

If you also click on English Teams at the top of that page and look at Cardiff's kit at that time they wore all blue and had a diagonal badge on the chest like the one in your photo, so I'm going to go even further and say that the game was played on 24/09/66 and Charlton ran out winners 5-0. We finished 4th from bottom that season and Cardiff one place below us just avoiding relegation. :-)
  • Wow the knowledge here is impressive, thanks again. The sad thing is I was more than likely there myself, but the grey matter is failing me ... mind you it was 48 years ago - jeez!

We then beat Bristol City at home by the same score 3 days later at the Valley.

  • Some interesting comments on here bringing back good memories.

But no-one has still answered my original question when I dug up this old thread. Was this book ever seriously going to be written? If so, what happened to it?

Airman Brown you must know, surely!

As a teenager I would have either been in the Covered End or in between the two stands by the floodlight pylon although can't remember the game or the Bristol City 5-0 a few days later which I was probably grounded for as it was a school night. :-(

I think the Cardiff player might be Don Murray.
  • I think I recall Killer saying at a supporters meeting a couple of years ago that the book was well advanced, but a couple of the characters who he was very critical of in the book, were going through some tough personal times, so he was holding off getting it published for a while out of respect for them.
