FORMER Sheffield United and Watford striker Danny Webber is training with Charlton.

The 29-year-old trialled with QPR earlier in the season after his
contract at Portsmouth was not renewed at the end of last season.

Addicks boss Chris Powell said: "We're just having a look, Danny has got a decent pedigree."

  • Be a good back up for BWP.
  • Hmmm.

Pay as you play only methinks.

    Horrible record with injuries.

    Who? BWP? ;-)

  • He has scored about 50 goals in a ten year injury-ravaged career and only 3 in his last 32 games for Pompey. And if that isn't poor enough, at 5ft 9 he fails the CL height test.  Not for me - even Lisbie has scored more in recent seasons.
  • Whenever I've him he has played primarily on the wing
Hard working but don't expect many goals (as mentioned above)

Anyway, do we need extra cover on the wings ?
.. surely Harriott can't drop any further down the pecking order !!
  • Can hardly fault CP though legal......just about every signing he's made has been a revelation, even those that many had grave misgivings about.
  • how many of this type of player (out on contract - effectively on the football scrap heap) has CP signed though ?
  • I don't think we need him or we could do alot better.

read all about him here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Webber

Kermorgant was out of contract and without a club.

He's training with us and for now that's all.  Powell can judge if he's on any "scrapheap"

    Kermorgant for one...
Giving a trial too means having a look at, as with Parnaby, Youga and probably several others who we don't know about there are some decent players out there looking for clubs who might do a job. Just because you give a car a test drive doesn't mean that you will buy it.

  • Hah .. forgot about Super Yann !!!

maybe not so much of a risk as I had originally stated depending on how much these guys want bearing in mind Parnaby and Webber were both playing in the Championship last year

I have faith that we won't pay over the odd for squad players in terms of wages ...

As they are without clubs we are in a good negotiating position over terms and wages.  Parnaby got injured in the last reserve game anyway.
  • that explains why we haven't heard anything more about him then (Parnaby)

Guess Div 1 wages are better than nothing at all
  • No thanks
  • Can't say I'd be over the moon about this one, but so far the score is roughly C.P. 12 - Newbie 0 about all decisions CAFC-related so if the man thinks this is the way forward then I will back him all the way.

Yep i'm on this page too , doesn't get the blood pumping , but at close quarters on trial Chris might think he's worth a punt until the end of the season?
  • Well I've never been majorly impressed with him but I guess he's pretty much always played at a higher level than us so who knows. Like above, I don't think anyone can disagree with anything Chris Powell at this stage.

    Alonso?
  • I think we need a striker in, that's obvious. As CP says Webber has some pedigree and a look doesn't cost us anything. Seems pretty clear that we are trying to cover every base in terms of the squad and although I was thinking more along the lines of Schlupp in January or perhaps even spending a few quid, I have every faith in CP based on what he has so far done.
  • Danny Webber = good player.   End of.

  • Thing is if we sign Schlupp on loan he will want to start every game.

If we sign Webber, he will know he hasn't got a guaranteed place and will have to battle (i.e. Hughes, Kerm)
  • We need cover for if (when) BWP goes to QPR...

    Have I missed something?

No just me being paranoid (I hope!)
  • We need cover for if (when) BWP goes to QPR...
Well Len, do you think he'll be leaving us in January then (because this loan is surely as cover until the end of the season)......or are you looking beyond that?

We have an option to take an extra year, but he still has to play a few more games before that option kicks in.
  • Danny Webber = good player.   End of.

please tell me this isn't one of the 2 wonderful signings (was it you who mentioned we'd make two decent signings  in jan)
  • If he signs he wouldn't be so much of an engine room. More a carburettor.
  • If he signs he wouldn't be so much of an engine room. More a carburettor.
Let's hope he doesn't choke under pressure.
  • Now I'm not going to say that Danny Webber is what we need or not.

But I look at 2 things:

    1) Powell has probably played against him before -  and perhaps found him a difficult opponent.

    2) Fits the context of a decent experienced player hungry for another chance.
