New laptop and want to get on board the best anti virus software. My previous subscription before my old laptop died was with McAffee which I know got a lot of critisism on here when CL was having issues. Appologies if there is a previous thread but I can't seem to search very easily.

Well...I guess it's whether or not you need a super dooper anti virus and pay for it or a free one which will still do a very reasonble job for you.
Personaly I use the free Avast system........pretty much idiot proof, very very easy to use and works really well..........leastways it has for me over several years.
I've no doubt that Norton and McAffee etc are better for real computer nuts and folk who simply 'have' to be protected up to the nines but honestly for the average user one has to ask yourself are they really worth it. Plus IMHO they are sometmes too clever by half and seem to stop you doing quite straightforward things on your pooter.
Having said this I'm no expert by any means..........you're better off asking MOG, as he's the boy for pooters and all things technical ya know!!
Finally it depends on what sort of web sites you are visiting......if you know what I mean!!
Any Palarse or Spanners sites are likely to have very nasty viruses indeed.........so Norton or McAfee it is if you're hell bent on going there, as they'll of course give you max protection from the scum.
Now loading Avast (have this on desktop and it seems fine) on laptop to see if things improve.
Hmm re-installed Avast & lost internet connection, uninstalled & regained internet, was fine until the upgrade ;-( I'm on Virgin media so I have the one they provide (Kaspersky ?) although I've heard a lot of negative comments about this system. Wish I knew what I was doing ;-)
The IT experts down the road from me recommend Bullguard. They say this is the best for them which is good enough for me.
Not goin to lie, but most anti-virus products are not worth it.
Most of them do not stop malware even when configured with the highest settings, this is due to the fact that if someone still clicks the wrong thing that your going to get the infection anyways.
We install Symantec Endpoint Protection on all our clients servers and workstations but at home i presonally dont, i find that most anti-virus applications are very resource heavy especially with any sort of active scanning and just not worth the preformance issues.
Dont click on the wrong link and you wont have any problem, just use malwarebytes once in a while to delete the bad cookies and temp files you get and you should be fine.
Norton will slow your PC down and its not that great, dump it and get another. You will need to download the "Norton Removal Tool" though because you will have trouble getting rid of it.
AVG all the way for a personal PC and its free
I also use Spybot and used to run NoScript for Firefox. That pretty much killed off any chance of viruses but did cause a few other problems so eventually I stopped using it.
