What's the best anti virus software ?

New laptop and want to get on board the best anti virus software. My previous subscription before my old laptop died was with McAffee which I know got a lot of critisism on here when CL was having issues. Appologies if there is a previous thread but I can't seem to search very easily.

  • I have Norton Premier never had problem with them good back up and suppoprt team also the price covers 3 pcs so is very reasonable
  • McAfee is the best at enterprise level. I've worked with it for 12 years and it destroys every other AV product for manageability, stability, configurability and reporting. For a home user, just use a free product (AVG for instance).
  • Thanks. With AVG don't you have to manually update though ?
  • I used AVG in the past, have Microsoft Security Essentials now. Both free, agree with Leroy a free product is generally fine for a home user.
  • Kaspersky does it all, with a virtual keyboard as well.
  • I used to use AVG but Avast is just better, nothing wrong with AVG mind.

Free Edition of Avast is solid

Well...I guess it's whether or not you need a super dooper anti virus and pay for it or a free one which will still do a very reasonble job for you.

Personaly I use the free Avast system........pretty much idiot proof, very very easy to use and works really well..........leastways it has for me over several years.

I've no doubt that Norton and McAffee etc are better for real computer nuts and folk who simply 'have' to be protected up to the nines but honestly for the average user one has to ask yourself are they really worth it. Plus IMHO they are sometmes too clever by half and seem to stop you doing quite straightforward things on your pooter.

Having said this I'm no expert by any means..........you're better off asking MOG, as he's the boy for pooters and all things technical ya know!!

Finally it depends on what sort of web sites you are visiting......if you know what I mean!!

Any Palarse or Spanners sites are likely to have very nasty viruses indeed.........so Norton or McAfee it is if you're hell bent on going there, as they'll of course give you max protection from the scum.

  • Kasersky is very good
  • I've got the one that you get with Virgin media. Kaspersky I think. AVG good too.
  • Very happy with AVG until the last release (2012) which stops my internet running almost stone dead - I use a T mobile dongle quite frequently and I think that's where the problem really is, but I'm stuck with it.

Now loading Avast (have this on desktop and it seems fine) on laptop to see if things improve.

  • IT at work told me to put the Microsoft one on my Mum's new laptop. Never used one on my Mac.
  • I've had Avast & today received notification of an upgrade which I installed & instantly lost access to the internet & for the next three hours kept trying but nothing. Uninstalled Avast & straight away got access to internet. Coincidence ?
  • I use Microsoft Security Essentials plus Threat Fire and then periodically run a scan with Malwarebytes. All free and all seem to work well.
  • I use BT internet and they provide Mcafee free on their service. I find McAfee fine.
  • I've had Avast & today received notification of an upgrade which I installed & instantly lost access to the internet & for the next three hours kept trying but nothing. Uninstalled Avast & straight away got access to internet. Coincidence ?
Yes I had the same upgrade yesterday...went ahead and did it............no problem at all!
  • I don't know which is the best, I only know I've used Kaspersky for about five years and it has been excellent for me. I also use Kaspersky password manager as it's the only way I can keep track of all my various log in details. Only problem I have had with Kaspersky is that after about nine months, the various updates seem to slow my computer down a tad, so I now uninstall and start afresh every six months. I also run Malwarebytes once a month and it has never detected anything.

Hmm re-installed Avast & lost internet connection, uninstalled & regained internet, was fine until the upgrade     ;-(   I'm on Virgin media so I have the one they provide (Kaspersky ?) although I've heard a lot of negative comments about this system. Wish I knew what I was doing ;-)

The IT experts down the road from me recommend Bullguard. They say this is the best for them which is good enough for me.

  • I am just glad Leroy got on here early doors, without having to deconstruct the merits of 15 other choices.

Using Avast on T mobile today and all working fine.

I've used them all - McA, Norton and Kaspersky. All pretty much a much ness in terms of virus detection. All around the same price range.

McAfee - If ever you choose to get rid of McAfee, do not rely on other products to remove McAfee for you. They invariably leave traces of McA on your machine. Run the McAfee removal tool from the McAfee website.

Norton - Been around for ages, from the old Peter Norton utility days of the '80s. Their Internet Security product, although comprehensive, tends to slow PC's right down. I know this from experience!

Kaspersky PURE- I am in my 2nd year of using this product. Got a good deal on a 3 user license. Working well so far. Not quite so user friendly in terms of the GUI but fine once you get used to it. I also got a free copy of TuneUP Utilities which does a good job in registry cleaning, defragging etc,,

Everyone has their favourites - I was swayed on price and also wanted to give Norton a miss as it uses up a lot of system resources. That said, I have not tried their 2012 edition so cannot comment on the latest version.
  • Not goin to lie, but most anti-virus products are not worth it.

Most of them do not stop malware even when configured with the highest settings, this is due to the fact that if someone still clicks the wrong thing that your going to get the infection anyways.

We install Symantec Endpoint Protection on all our clients servers and workstations but at home i presonally dont, i find that most anti-virus applications are very resource heavy especially with any sort of active scanning and just not worth the preformance issues.

Dont click on the wrong link and you wont have any problem, just use malwarebytes once in a while to delete the bad cookies and temp files you get and you should be fine.

  • Use Norton and couldn't understand why the same piece of malware kept appearing after cleaning it out every day.  Checked the Norton settings and found the malware was turning off protection to get past the security. Cured by protecting the settings with a password but surprised Norton didn't force settings to be password protected in the first place.  Now run malwarebytes regularly and don't assume nothing can get through.

Norton will slow your PC down and its not that great, dump it and get another. You will need to download the "Norton Removal Tool" though because you will have trouble getting rid of it.

AVG all the way for a personal PC and its free

  • To be fair, providing your a good little boy, dont visit any naughty sites and keep your OS and browser updated you should be able to stay virus free. I've not had one for ages now, occassionally do a check & never had anything.

    AVG it is then ;-)
  • Would go with Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) or Avast. MSE is light touch so doesn't slow things down at all. Avast has the boot scan though which is good if you do get something nasty. Malwarebytes not bad as back up to one of the above and doesn't seem to conflict.
  • Used to use AVG but it started blocking stuff I didn't want to block and was a pig to get it to stop. Ended up uninstalling AVG and putting Avast on. So far, touch wood, no problems.

I also use Spybot and used to run NoScript for Firefox. That pretty much killed off any chance of viruses but did cause a few other problems so eventually I stopped using it.

So......a bit like not getting a dose then?

It was you "touching wood" that caused AVG to start blocking the site you were looking at Rizz :-)
