Our back four

edited December 2011 in General Charlton
I think our regular back four are good enough for the top half of the championship. I also think they will be the main reason we will be promoted, as we have goals in us from all over the pitch, although without looking at any stats i would say our defenders are among the lowest scoring in the division

  • True.. I think we have the best defence in the league.. Rhoys wiggins has worked wonders for us. Taylor and morrison are just plain and simply solid. And solly well he's just f'in quality !!
  • Yes, the goals against story tells the whole story in this case.
  • Isnt only the back 4 that look good for the championship, strikers and keeper could make it.

Think its to early to tell with the midfield.
  • Not that he has put a foot wrong but I just wonder if Taylor is mobile enough for Championship football. The other three are definitely good enough.

Isnt he 29? Not a fan of over 31's playing to big a role

Steve Thompson had the turning circle of the QE2 but played a couple of seasons in the top flight. Mind you that was 25 years ago..
  • Chris Solly has been unbelievable this season.
  • I think Taylor is probably at his peak but that's still good enough for a top Championship team with the right players alongside him (which he currently has). As for the other three, I think they're just going to get better and better.

What impresses me most is not how good they are individually, but how good a unit they are.

  • They are superb.  We have the best defensive record in the league.  Here's how we compare with the top three in each division:

As a defender in my playing days couldn't agree more however without the lads in front of you to stick it in the net I disagree that this will be the main reason for our promotion; it will be the overall team contribution.
  • Its not just the goals conceded performance its also achieved with a very low number of yellow cards and I think no reds.  Cort must be so cheesed off, still he'll get a game tomorrow,
  • Taylor does an importnat job and I would be looking at the whole unit being not just able to play in the Championship next season but being better than most in that league. Do agree that it isn't just about individuals but the players around you and the whole unit. You only have to look at Palace who have McCarthy and they don't let in too many. Although he did het an O.G. last night -chortle!

Guaranteed red card for Cort tomorrow, now you've said that....;-)
  • Only seen Cort once and he did not appear very mobile to me.  Put him on against Parkin and there may have been a bit of a heavyweight bloodbath.  Otherwise the back four are doing more than just fine at the moment.  Never rated Youga - prone to rushes of blood to the head and leaving gaping holes at the back when he inevitable lost the ball going forward.  If it ain't broke...........
  • Watching on Monday, I said to my brother there is no comparison between the defence this season and last imagine Doherty playing tonight he would be ran all over the place. He agreed. I think Morrison and Talyor are Superb, Wiggins improves all the time. Solly has improved but I still think he is the weak link. I know a lot of people won't agree but this is my opinion.

All I hope is that we don't have to watch in a Charlton shirt again!

  • All about concentration.  This year there's been so few silly mistakes.  Doc and Mig often flipped between solid performance and amateur hour mistakes and Christian made a number of unnecessary lunges.  These guys are very solid and unshowy but are so rarely at fault.  Couldn't ask for more.
  • Taylor and Morrison look like they've a playing partnership for several seasons, it's hard to believe that this is their first season at the club let alone in the same team.
  • Solly the weak link? Wow.

  • Solly would be the only one who I'd be worried about in the Championship, but its a small worry as he's young and is only goiung to get better and will adapt quickly. But I still think he could do an amazing job at RB. That's how slight the worry is
  • I rate Hamer- think we have a quality back 5
  • Oh yeah - Solly , weak link - he is superb
  • Solly, weak link?. Have you seen his match stats for the season?
  • I had serious doubts about Solly before the season started based on size and on pace. He has been outstanding all season and is still improving.

exactly .. + Solly has come of age and Wiggins is a tremendous attacking left back .. they are all playing in front of a keeper who'll be an England regular in about 4 years time
  • Solly has been oustanding this season and would probably be my choice for POTY if the votes were cast now.
  • Personally I have my doubts over Hamer! I kinda think the superb defence in front of him is saving his blushes a little
  • One word for our back four....IMMENSE .
  • Solly has been the best player in the league this season. That's my opinion. If he's a weak-link then I suggest it's only in your head, and not in any sense of reality ;)
